Reader question: Why do Thai ladies do this?

Dear readers,

I keep seeing different pictures this month of Thai ladies looking up with their eyes closed and then putting their hand to their head with 3 fingers open (the thumb, index finger and little finger).

Does this have a special meaning or can someone answer this? Because I can't get any wiser from the sentences that go with it..

Regards,

Ronald

I'm trying to figure it out, I know it's the same sign as a lumberjack who lost 2 fingers and orders 5 beers this way.

My wife reports that it was shown on TV that some 'star movie' from Bangkok announced at the beginning of this month on face book and instagram that it was marrying the very rich owner of Audi Thailand. She made this gesture meaning: I love you! This gesture comes from Youtube. Supposed to have been introduced from Korea. Of course, this gesture is imitated by many Thailadies, hoping to hook someone richer.
If you see a beautiful person of the feminine making such a hand gesture, you can assume that she thinks you are a millionaire!

What KhunRudolf writes here is indeed correct, the gesture means I love you, but in reality these women actually mean I LOVE YOUR MONEY.
So men, if you see a Thai lady make this gesture to you, then gesture back by raising your middle finger, and the lady in question will understand that there is nothing to get from you.
And then blend into the crowd as soon as possible, or jump into a taxi, because her love for you is likely to turn to rage!

Indeed: 'I love you' and often meant playfully. Children at school or in the village also use it, innocently and well-meaning. I've been seeing it for years... Sometimes it's simpler and more innocent than what I'm reading now. You even see it on TV every now and then. Not every Thai woman is after money and sometimes just nice…. Smiling back kindly also helps, saves taxi costs and you don't get tired of running 🙂

@Farang Tingtong, raising a middle finger is rather disrespectful…..

Google "hand gesture respect" Perhaps then it is clear for the ignorant

My response to this topic is intended and with a nod to KhunRudolf's response, so when a wildly strange lady on the street makes this gesture at you, and is clearly after your money.
Agree with some comments that raising a middle finger shows little respect, but you have to earn respect and in such a situation I have little or no respect for this lady who is out to rob you of your hard-earned help, I think this shows little respect towards the farang.

I just followed Ruud's advice and looked on Google for hand gesture respect, but here on this site you can go in all directions as it can be read that in Spain (and surrounding areas) there is a practice of making the I LOVE YOU gesture it means about the same as raising the middle finger for us. It is called 'corna' (little horn) and depicts a goat or a bull. It doesn't exactly mean the same thing (namely that your partner is doing it with someone else) but it does have approximately the same meaning and impact as f*ck you. Also be careful in Italy; you can get a nice fine for it!

I learned the sign from an American who said it belongs to the sign language for the deaf. She gave lessons and swimming lessons to deaf students. It is a combination of the letters I, L and Y: betokened I love you

It is an i love you sign introduced by prince in the movie
Purple Rain. After that, the sign fell into oblivion and apparently revived in Thailand.
