- Rob: Hello Frans, From May 10 you can pre-order it from the publisher. My email address is [email protected]
- Rob: The publisher is still working on the design and I don't know the sales price yet. It will be available for purchase from May 24. I will return in October

Home » Reader question » Reader question: Transport between Bangkok and Koh Samet or Koh Chang
Dear readers,
We are going to Thailand again for 3 weeks in mid-November and this time we want to go to Koh Samet, Koh Chang and possibly Koh Kood.
Does anyone have any tips regarding transport from Bangkok to and between the islands, how long we will be on the road, hotels and possibly other interesting information?
Thanks in advance and we hope for a response
Greetings,
Gina
Ps: we don't travel with a backpack,
to Koh Samet, just by bus to Rayong, about 2 hours) and then from there by boat, I've done it a few times
I only have experience with Koh Samet. I would take a bus to Rayong and from there to the main jetty. Note the 'official' boats are large boats. Don't take a speedboat. That's very expensive and not much faster as they claim. There is a counter where they sell the official tickets and where the prices are the same. If you are referred by the people around the harbor to counters where they rent out speedboats, you are at the wrong place. Just behind it is the official counter! Btw i departed from bangsaen/nongmon district chonburi with a bus. It will probably be longer via Bangkok. Don't know how long. If I'm right, it's best to go to koh chang from trat. There too, make sure you take the official boat. Good luck. I heard Koh chang is even more beautiful than koh samet. Note last time I was there I accidentally went on a public holiday/weekend and no hotel booked in advance. Lucky a hotel just behind the beach in an intermediate street. But many were without and I was also lucky to speak the language, which made it easier for the inhabitants there to help and guide them. It might be useful to book a hotel in advance. And I left my luggage in the home town of Chonburi and went with a backpack. Still easier. I was in hotel 35/6 Moo 4 Tambon Pae Aumhur Muang, Samed Center, Koh Samet, Thailand 21160 21160 simple, small but doable. With a good restaurant from the same owner.
Thanks for the info, greetings, Gina
Hotel name was Chilli BTW
Last year we went from Bangkok to Koh Chang with a luxury minibus. Takes about 6 hours and is very nice (we thought). We arranged this through Green Wood Travel. Van picked us up at the hotel and took us to our destination on Koh Chang including the ferry.
nice tip. probably a nice trip. how much is this?
I'm not exactly sure Ed, was on the trip we booked. But I never believe this was very expensive.
Just take a taxi to thrat and then take the ferry. The easiest way.
Koh samet is nice but not really doable with a hard suitcase. Better take a big backpack. Don't drive very well through the sand. we were on koh samet in the blue lagoon. transportation is fastest by taxi. is not too expensive. 1500-2000 baht. there are also buses but this is more difficult.
One hour flight to Trang, there a van with several people will take you to your hotel / resort on Koh Chang.
Hello Jan, what does the taxi cost and approximately how long is the journey?
The bus is about 6 to 7 hours away.
I like to hear from you.
g Dick.
Dick,
A taxi from the airport (Subernabhumi) to Trat costs 3500 baht (about 85 euros), and takes between 3 1/2 and 4 hours. The distance is about 320 km. I personally find it the most pleasant form of travel: In the Netherlands I pay 42 euros from Amsterdam West to Schiphol! (15 km, 15 minutes drive).
You can take a taxi from Bangkok and Pattaya to Ban Phe.
The drive from Bangkok takes ± 2.5 hours. From Pattaya it takes ± 1 hour.
From the eastern bus station in Bangkok (Ekamai station), buses to Ban Phe depart throughout the day. Travel time to Ban Phe is ± 3 hours.
Boats depart all day from Ban Phe to Nadan pier on Koh Samet. The crossing takes ± 30 minutes.
It is also possible to rent a private speedboat. The crossing then takes ± 15 minutes.
Koh Samet you already have an answer to.
Traveling to Koh Chang is easiest with the mini-bus 600-800 baht pp. Can be arranged anywhere in Thailand at the hotel. You can also take a taxi if you are with more people 4000-4500 baht, just hail a taxi on the street. Ferry costs 80b pp. Every driver knows you have to go to Laem Ngop, the crossings, there are two of them and it doesn't matter which one.
You can go to Koh Kood via Koh Chang or from the mainland 500-1000b.
On Koh Chang I recommend Rock Sand Resort. Nice and quiet, on the sea and 500m across the beach to White Sand Beach. Backpackers and Flashpackers rooms, cheap and expensive. Also good food there.
You indicate: we do not travel with a backpack. It's easier in Thailand; a backpack. Transport in Thailand is always well organized, once you have the right arrangements, but you always have to walk a bit and that lugging with suitcases….
Thanks Jasper, this helps me.
last year we were by bus and that took us too long. So ee 7 hours with 2 young children.
Just a little too long
.Price is not too bad.December we will go that way again.
Gr Dick
From Koh Chang you can take a small boat via Koh Mak to Koh Kood (two options: speed and slow boat: does not matter much).
On Koh Kood you only have resorts along the coastline. It is recommended to inquire and book in advance at a travel agency on Koh Chang. Availability and prices vary quite a bit.
There is nothing to do outside the resorts. There are no shops, no villages. You cannot use a debit card on Koh Kood, so take cash with you. The resorts and drinks, dinners, etc. are more expensive than elsewhere in Thailand.
Inform yourself well before you go, the beaches are beautiful, but you will not find much entertainment. If you're in good company and you're fine with doing nothing, except sunbathing and reading, then it's a good place to be. If you're looking for a little more distraction and a cheap stay, don't go.
There is a society, Lomprayah: http://www.lomprayah.com, which takes you from Bangkok to Koh Chang by bus and high speed ferry. This one also makes a short stop in Hua Hin.
This year we drove back and forth to Koh Chang from Hua Hin with this company. Beautiful luxury (night) bus with good seating comfort. Just take a look at the website.
Sjaak, I think you have no idea about the topography of Thailand, because the company mentioned above transports you from Bangkok via the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan to Koh Samui. Koh Chang is on the other side of the Gulf of Thailand….
Yea stupid of me…. I wasn't that awake this morning. When we went to Koh Pangan, we also talked about Koh Chang for a long time…. that's how I got those two mixed up, because because I was sure, I hadn't checked for a while.
My apologies for the wrong information!!!
PS I do know that we are talking about Thailand (and not like Reagan said in Brazil at the time that he was honored to be in Venezuela)….
Isn't there another Ko Chang near Chumpon? Ever heard something like this….
That's not who we mean. We mean Ko Chang In Trat province.
