Dear readers,

What is the difference between the Thai police and the Tourist police. And what can the tourist police do for me if I get into trouble?

Yours faithfully,

Henk

In any case, they speak English and look a little further than their colleagues who only deal with Thai. They can advise you on the best steps to take, possibly call in an embassy, etc.

I don't know the essential differences, but I think there is a big difference in powers...

What I can say is that you have two types of tourist police: the people who do this with great enthusiasm and the group that is precisely obliged to do this job.

In concrete terms: some tourist police officers will do everything they can to help you, others do no more than always refer you to the regular police.

The Tourist Police was established to prevent Europeans from coming into contact with the Royal Thai Police and from being confronted with the system. You could say that the idea was to pit the better police elements against the tourists. They also work with Farang volunteers, who are liaison between tourists and police. They know that the European reaction towards the police is different from that of a Thai, for example. Since the police are not above us, but we regard them as equal, we act that way. But of course you are wrong with the local police. Tourist Police understands better that there is a difference.

    Dear Henk,

The name says it all I think.

In case of problems, they are the first point of contact with the tourist.
The only difference between the two is that someone who is part of the “Tourist Police” should speak English (or other languages as well). (not always the case of course)
Moreover, they also receive some extra training on how to deal with foreigners.
Furthermore, both are police officers with the same police tasks and police powers.

You are also not obliged to go to the “Tourist Police” with questions or problems.
You can also go to the “normal” police. If you speak Thai then there is no problem, but if you only speak English you might run into a language wall.

“Tourist Police” will usually only be found in tourist places. If you live outside those places, you automatically rely on the “normal” police.

    Hi Hank
The difference is that you don't have to pay the tourist police at the Thai police, that's a habit.
The tourist police doesn't actually do anything walking in the bar or in the main street along the bars like in bangla.
They will help you with the visa application, that's it, they don't know why they volunteer, they say maybe out of boredom.
The Thai police consists of different types, some may only hand out fines, for example, no helmet, no driver's license.
But the other Thai police are too good for that, they lose out for pocket money or people who build a house like me.
No one knows what else they do???
    Kind regards, Rob

The Thai police empty your wallet and have nothing but contempt for the farang and do not want to speak English

The tourist police give you a tissue to dry your tears and speak comforting words to you in English.

why always so bad at the Thai police? Because you didn't have your helmet on and you got ticketed for it?
My experience is that the police here are no more or less than the Dutch, who only know how to solve 25% of the cases and have to meet an annual target of fines.
I have had very good experiences with the Thai police in solving a major fraud case, which also involved the mafia. And with the tourist police in a rental dispute.
In both cases, excellent work was delivered. In the Netherlands I have had less good experiences with the police.
