Home » Reader question » Reader question: How best to get from Udon Thani to Koh Samet
Dear readers,
Unfortunately I am dependent on the construction holiday so last year it rained a bit in Kao Lak and Phuket. This year we would like to go to Koh Samet where I have not been yet. Hopefully it's a little better there.
Now we would like to know the best way to get there from Udon Thani. First the plane to Bangkok and then?
A taxi or is there a bus and of course the Ferry must be taken into account?
Please share your experience, thanks in advance,
Ralph
Ralph,
I have been to Koh Samui a number of times. Go there again at the end of September. Air travel by Air Asia approx. 800 baht return (offer).
From Bangkok – Don Mueang airport you fly to Udon Thani.
Buses are waiting there and you buy (in the arrivals hall) a combination bus/koh samui/ferry ticket.
Points itself. The bus goes to Donsak, about 1,5 hours and the ferries go every hour. Crossing approx. 1,25 hours.
The easiest thing to do on Koh Samui is to take a taxi to your hotel.
All in all a cheap trip to Koh Samui. However, you can also take a direct flight to Koh Samui from Bangkok, which is of course much more expensive.
Regards,
willem
Is it true that the Thais cannot count and the Dutch cannot read or write? I should believe it. In my opinion, Koh Samet and Koh Samui are two completely different islands that have nothing to do with each other even in terms of location, except that they are both in the Gulf of Thailand. What does the questioner actually gain from this response? Koh Samui is much further south than Koh Samet and the rainy season is not too bad in July. Koh Samui has its peak in terms of rainfall in October. On Koh Samet it is normally earlier... so pay attention or you will have the same problem as before. I will leave it to the “experts” as to how best to go there because this is not my region.

Willem, Ralph is looking for transportation to Koh Samet, not Koh Samui.
I think it's best to fly from Udon Thani to Don Muang, or to Pattaya (U-tapao), but those tickets are often more expensive than tickets to Don Muang. I think Bangkok Airways is the only one that flies to U-Tapao. Then by taxi from U-Tapao or Bangkok (Don Muang) to Koh Samet. Is quite a nice ride, I found it a long time from Pattaya to Koh Samet.
And while you're there, drop by Cafe Bar Old Amsterdam on Koh Samet. Always cosy! And take a hotel or apartment in the center, we were on the quiet side of the island and had to walk quite a distance every time past all kinds of stray dogs, no fun at night. You have a Dutch hostel, Willem's Hoekje.
A very beautiful beach!
I hope the weather is good for you, because Koh Samet has a bit of the same climate as Pattaya and you can have bad luck there in September. According to Koh Samui, you have the best chance of good(er) weather.
Hi Ralph,
Fly to Bangkok, Don Muang
Taxi 15 min to start BTS station Mo chit, sukhumvit line 14 stations to Ekamai, eastern bus station
Exit nr 2(over the sukhumvit rd)
3 min walk to the bus station.
Buy ticket at the Cherdai company travel time approx 4 hours bus, costs about 200 bht
This bus ends on the east side of Ban Phe / Nuantip pier for the boat to Koh Samet.
I usually choose Ao Wong Duan, a large bay in the middle of the island, still fairly quiet and with a direct ferry from the pier. You then avoid a whole trip across the island.
Google for one of the resorts, in different price ranges,
at Agoda or Booking com .eg Vongduern villa.
Have a nice holiday (the weather is usually better than on the mainland)
Steven
Ralph, fly from Udon to BKK Suvarnahbumi, there you can choose by taxi, approx. 2200 bt to Rayong or by bus to Rayong, approx. 330 bt pp. You can buy a bus ticket all the way down in the hall where the taxis are outside, there is a desk here. In Rayong you go to the pier, at the head of this is a counter to buy tickets for the boat, I think 120 bt pp return. Walk onto the pier and you will be told which boat to take, they sail back and forth all day with provisions for the hotels. On Koh Samet, pickups are ready as a taxi for further transport, just pay an entrance fee for the "national park" and you're done. A must is Silver Sand Resort. My opinion about Koh Samet ? I didn't find any…. On. Very polluted and in the evening the inevitable boys with their torch shows who foul the beach with their diesel oil leaking torches.
Have a nice holiday! Ron.
