Home » Reader question » Reader question: Where can I book train tickets to Chiang Mai?
Dear readers,
Can someone tell me where I can buy train tickets for the night train to Chang Mai (departure Bangkok)? Possibly on the internet.
According to our travel organization, they can do this for 33 euros per person per one way. And they say this should be done well in advance. Who has experience with this?
With kind regards,
Jacky
Dear Jackie.
Buying train tickets online directly from the Thai railways has not been possible for some time now.
You can buy these at the train station itself or at a travel agency (which will therefore also charge some commission) they will buy the tickets for you at the station. Thought they charge something like 150thb extra per card in Thailand.
On the official website you can find the prices 2nd class sleeper costs max 900 thb = +- 20 euros.

If you are planning to travel on weekends or public holidays I would definitely make sure I have the tickets well in advance. Certain number of days.
I myself have run into a sold-out train several times.
You must indeed arrange tickets for the night train well in advance. Almost all travel organizations use that night train for their travelers. So always well occupied until full. For the other trains it is best to buy the tickets at the counter. Staff speaks English and payment by credit card is possible. Have a look at: http://www.greenwoodtravel.nl/transport/#trainticket
Good Morning,
You can order tickets online at http://www.thailandtrainticket.com. Works simple and you get a quick response.
Good luck,
Jeannette
Just tried:
You have to collect your ticket from their travel agency in Bangkok (Lumpini). And otherwise there will be extra charges to have them delivered to your hotel 100THB and 300THB if you pick them up at the station?.
Unfortunately, this is not directly booking and printing your ticket online.
You might as well arrange things at a travel agency close to your hotel.
33 euros per person one way through the travel organization. And what do you think you can save if you arrange it yourself? You are on vacation. Use your time for something other than figuring this out and leave it to the tour company.
Dear Jackie,
No booking necessary, just go to hua lampong in bangkok in time and buy your ticket there yourself, a few hours or the day before your departure.
Watch out for tuk tuk drivers who drop you off at a tourist office, they will only tell you that the train is full and only want to sell a ticket with hotel accommodation!
DO NOT go there!!!
Just go to the desk in the station and they will certainly help you !!
Enjoy Chang Mai!!
Bart .
I also have a good experience with http://www.thailandtrainticket.com
200 Bath fee and the ticket will be delivered to hotel for free.
Good service. I wanted to book around Songkran. The desired train was already full, but at my request they looked for alternatives.
Don't be tempted in front of the station by friendly men or women who offer to buy the ticket for you because the tickets are sold out, and they can still arrange something for you. You then pay far too much for that ticket, while they are still available at the normal price at the counter.
Is it true that the night train to Chiang Mai is currently not running due to the curfew?
