Dear readers,

Within two months it will be that time back to the last Paradise…. Thailand! The thing is, I always carry a lot of cash with me. That money from the machine, well your card shouldn't be accepted? Actually, I don't trust that 100%.

So then I thought of something as simple as the old familiar Traveler's Cheque. Does anyone know if they accept these everywhere in the banks and bureaux de change?

Thanks for the necessary information.

Yours faithfully,

Eddy

    Hello Eddy,

I went to Thailand 3 years ago and also had old traveler checks with me. You couldn't exchange them everywhere back then. I myself have been to a large bank in Bangkok (I can't remember the name). But I don't know if you can still exchange them now.
Good luck and inquire in the city, then you will probably work it out.

At Siam Commercial apparently still, I think because they are still listed.
Not the best bank when it comes to exchanging money and you should take a look around.

You do get a slightly better rate for a TC, but they also cost money of course and if I'm not mistaken they charge 150 Baht per TC in Thailand when exchanging.

I exchanged my last TC (in euros) about a year ago at an office in soi 8 in Pattaya. The rate at that time was slightly better than cash. Passport required for redemption.

    Eddie,

I come to Thailand on average 4 times a year. Been there for about 3 months in total. Yes I still work and often can't get more than 3 weeks off. I do everything with the normal debit card. Have never had any problems with it. Sometimes a machine doesn't work but then you grab the next one. I believe Thailand is the country with the most ATM machines. Literally on every street corner. Almost everywhere within a few minutes walk. Especially in the big cities at every Familymart, 7/11 etc.

I wouldn't worry about a debit card. I also have a credit card on hand. You already need it for various internet transactions. And before you answer that you don't trust that at all, I will tell you there is nothing better secured and insured than credit card. A fraud transaction, which can happen, or an order not delivered and you have your money back. Full of praise. Bought a ticket for a Christmas flight to Thailand from a new airline 2 years ago and the flight was suddenly cancelled. The airline and agent pointed to each other for the refund of the ticket. Called ING and I had the money in the account after 2 weeks.

With the checks you have to see where you can exchange them and you will see that always happens when offices are closed. But it can. The choice is yours.

Good luck and have fun in paradise. I'll be back soon too.

    Willem

Apparently you have a lot of cash and that's where the problem lies.
If not, when I still lived in the Netherlands I had an extra bank account and therefore I had 2 bank cards. Now it must be very crazy if you lose that bee. Either in a vending machine or normally otherwise.
Keeping each other apart of course.

The chance that Traveler checks are not accepted somewhere is considerably greater than that an ATM does not like your card.
I had a problem with an ATM once, in September 2009. I didn't have a Thai SIM card at the time, so I couldn't call the phone number listed on the ATM.

    From the archive :

Some banking troubles: Frans had put his bank card in the ATM and suddenly the entire screen of the debit card money dispenser fell out and whichever button Frans pressed, the card was swallowed but did not come out again. What is good advice?

A little further on was a competing bank with an office next to it, so I went there and told them what was going on. Frans was immediately reassured – which is very pleasant in such a situation – and was instructed to walk back to the ATM and simply wait there. Within five minutes a gentleman arrived on a scooter, removed the machine from the wall and handed me back my card.

Have an identical experience, really fast help on the spot, man fished 3 cards from the machine, I pointed to mine and without further identification he gave it to me. Not good, but nice. In the ATM less than 10 steps further, I was still able to pin with the desired result. A debit card together with a credit card are enough to not get a cash problem.

Exchanging or cashing travelers checks is not easy, I myself have us dollars checks from master card, can't cash them anywhere, wherever I've been I was told that only travelers checks from American express are welcome. I am now sending the checks to the Bank that issued them so that the amounts of the checks can be credited to my account at my Bank,
    wish you good luck.

Travel checks always remain valid. At some banks you can also see the exchange rate for checks.

I've been using a Dutch debit card from ING for years, never had any problems with it other than the Euro 2.25 that ING steals from me with every cash withdrawal. Also have a 2nd debit card in my wife's name plus a credit card. So fully covered in case of loss (has happened to me before) There are plenty of banks that, in Thailand, refuse Traveler checks and send you to Bangkok, is a bank there that does it but not all at once, you have to come back every day .
