Reader question: Transit visa for transit in Cairo

Dear readers,

I am Belgian married to a Thai national and we journey this year with Egyptair from Brussels over Cairo to Bangkok.

Everyone says my wife doesn't need a transit visa. She travels with her Thai travel pass and her Belgian ID card, so she does not need a visa when leaving Thailand towards Belgium.

Now the Egyptian embassy has reacted differently and they say that my wife needs a visa to do the 3 hours transit. This application takes 5 weeks and the decision is in Egypt, they write to me.

I sent all documents to the Egyptian Embassy in Brussels and I am waiting for the follow-up. Strange that most authorities say that no visa is required for transit in Cairo and that the Egyptian Embassy says the opposite. After all, they are the last decision makers and can adjust this arrangement at will.

Has anyone experienced this before and is there a reason for it…?

Thanks for your comment.

    Dear Geert,

Earlier this year I flew with Egyptair from AMS to BKK. I myself am Dutch. They asked everyone on board if they wanted a visa. If you stayed at the airport.. you didn't have to have these. After that I was never asked for a Visa anywhere at the airport. Now your wife would have just as many rights as you with her Belgian ID, and I don't foresee any problems.

    Success!

hello, visa is not necessary ,I didn't need it 3 years ago either

A transit visa is not necessary as long as you are not trying to leave the airport. Thousands of people pass through Cairo every day and are never asked for a visa. The information from the Egyptian embassy is incorrect.

Last year I also flew with Egypt Air from Amsterdam via Cairo to Bangkok and back again, together with my Thai partner.
She did not have a visa for Egypt and we also had to wait about 3 hours in Cairo for the connection on both the outward and return journey and we had no problem at all.
I think you do need a visa when you leave the airport.

Strange that you would need a visa even in transit. I think the Egyptian embassy is wrong here. However, when you leave the transit zone, you simply have to comply with the visa requirements. In that case, different conditions apply to people with Thai nationality than to, among others, the Dutch and Belgians. Thais must indeed apply for a visa in advance and cannot purchase it at the airport in Cairo. See eg http://www.egyptianconsulate.co.uk/Visas_SectionI.php

    Well Gert,
I have been there many times as a Dutchman for transit to Spain, and I noticed that certain people of other nationalities were taken separately.
But normally you don't go through customs to, for example, the baggage hall.
Often people also call out “Transit”, and then you can actually go straight through the hand luggage check for Transit.

My partner - a Thai with a Thai passport and I - a Dutchman with a Dutch passport - have been traveling via Cairo for years (sometimes twice a year); never had any problem.

And yes : we stay on the airfield within the transit ; incidentally, our papers are always checked (they do that with everyone).
If it were the case that we needed a visa, we should have had problems a long time ago - years ago.

By the way, the trip is a lot and I often have transits outside the European Union (Russia; China: Malaysia, etc.) and have never had a problem.

    So I don't understand this.

Let us hear from you when “everything is finalized please”.

I also don't think you need a visa. Only if you enter Cairo, but not for a transver. We have also flown with them to Bangkok via Cairo, but no problem with the transfer. Have a good flight.

If she has a Belgian ID card she is Belgian like you so what's the problem. Just apply for a Belgian passport at the municipality for her. My wife is also Thai and has also had Belgian nationality for several years. She has both nationalities because you do not have to give up Thai nationality when obtaining Belgian nationality.

a Thai acquaintance with a Thai passport flew alone from Amsterdam back to Bangkok via Cairo. You will receive your boarding card in Amsterdam for the flight Cairo – BKK. So you absolutely do not need a visa. You stay in the transit area. I wouldn't worry. This was a year ago just to be clear.

    Dear Gert.

Stay in the airport and just get on the plane to BKK through the right gate.
No problem. Transit is only if you go outside the airport to spend the night, for example.

you don't need a visa anywhere for a transit, every international airport has a separate transit area, of course you are not allowed to leave the airport.

    Hi Geert,

Weird story. Are you planning to go through immigration in Egypt, there or back? If you stay in transit, you are not in Egypt and you do not need a visa for that country. But maybe things are just as weird there as in the USA. With a transfer you go through immigration there 2 times. Why? I still don't get that!

I have been married to a Thai woman for 10 years. Earlier last year I flew to Bangkok via Amsterdam / Cairo . My wife also only had a Thai passport and ID card. Didn't have any problems.

    Dear Gert,
Your national does not need a visa if she does not leave the airport….
    With best regards

My wife is Thai and lives in Belgium.
In January we traveled to Thailand with Egyptair with a stopover in Cairo.
My wife had her Thai passport and Belgian ID.
No problem at all. Yet logically also since they are the transit area of the airport
don't leave. Pretty sure your wife doesn't need a visa.
    Kind regards, Robert
