Dear readers,

I am going to Thailand in September. I saw that my Thai driver's license was valid until May 2015. I rent a car and don't have time to spend a day renewing the driver's license first. I have a valid Dutch driver's license.

I understand that your driver's license should be valid in theory, but who knows how this is handled in practice? I think the rental company will quickly say that this is no problem to be able to rent out the car anyway.

Do I run an extra risk in a collision due to my fault because the Thai driving license has expired?

Regards,

Kees

I would get an international driver's license from the ANWB before departure. A landlord can request it and so can the insurance company if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident.

Then you can still get an international driving license from the ANWB in the Netherlands.
This is generally accepted by (reliable) rental companies.
You can get into trouble with an expired Thai driver's license.

You MUST have an international driver's license.
    Or a Thai of course.

All other documents do not count.

    Simple as that.

Simply get an International driving license from the ANWB on your Dutch driving licence.

Have you thought about getting an international driver's license? The ANWB issues this

Would I get an International Driving Permit from the ANWB?

    That is certainly valid.

You are going in September so plenty of time…

Driving without a valid driver's license is not allowed, but it is not a problem as long as you are not checked and do not get into an accident. That is no different in the Netherlands. You are seriously screwed if you get damage, because the insurance will not pay anything. Even if your landlord doesn't think it's a problem, you keep running the risk. So don't. Get an international driving license from the ANWB (the most annoying and unnecessary "official" document that exists, but you can't ignore it), then you can just drive there with your NL driving license.

Can you ' continue your way ' in Thailand without any problems ?

Why not go to the ANWB for an international driver's license?

Kees, have an international driver's license made at the ANWB, it will take you 5 minutes. Then you are protected from problems in the event of an accident. Then leave your int. see driver's license.
You can later renew your Thai driving license at your leisure.

    Kind regards,
    Climb.

I am afraid that renewal is not possible and that you will have to take the exam again.

If you have a Dutch driver's license, just show it and that is sufficient in 99% of cases. At a POLICE check, one can ask for an International Driver's License, a theoretically useful, but in practice useless expensive piece of paper (only a cash cow for the ANWB).

If you only have an expired driver's license (Thai or Dutch), then a reputable rental company should (should) rent a nothing. From an insurance point of view it is a problem anyway, because your proof of driving skills is no longer there. In practice it may seem like peanuts, but it can turn out to be very annoying. If Thai insurers are even a little bit like their Dutch cousins, they will not pay out if they can find a reason. And no valid driver's license seems like a very good one.

Fortunately, you have a valid Dutch driving license, so problem solved, but otherwise I would certainly take the trouble to get a valid driving license. Uncle agent may be able to talk with a lunch you paid for, but that is a lot more difficult with insurers.

Getting an international driver's license from the ANWB is the best thing to do

Whatever advice you get, WHAT happens in an accident? Right, the farang is guilty, because he has NO driver's license. Make your own assessment….

Little questions about the known way. It's not about whether you get the car. It's about being in trouble if something happens. Bring an int driver's license and the problem is solved.

Have it extended at the relevant authority. Driving without a valid driver's license is an offence. If something happens, insurance is technically heavily involved. Do you want to take that risk?…….no.
You are not going to take any risks for the occupants, either… or you are. Think soberly.
Have fun and have a good trip.

International driver's license, at the ANWB, Don't forget to bring a passport photo.

    Kees,

Arranging a driving license abroad at the ANWB is easy, but do bring a passport photo.
