Reader question: What is the fastest way to get from the west coast to the east coast in Thailand?
Dear readers,
In the summer, my boyfriend and I are going to Thailand for 3,5 weeks. We really want to see the islands of Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket and we have also booked an accommodation on Koh Phangan to be able to attend the Fullmoon party.
My question is what is the fastest way to get from the west coast to the east coast and how long will it take me?
Greetings,
Denise
Hi Dennis,
It is best to rent a minibus (van) or something similar (at a travel agency), travel time depends on many factors, but count on an hour or 4, maybe you can also arrange the crossing with the ferry to Samui at the travel agency, from from there you travel on to Ko Phangan.
Regards Joy.
Hi Dennis,
I did it just recently. From Krabi (Ao nang) to Samui.
Pick up was at 06.15 at ao nang by minibus, to Krabi town, 07.00 transfer to larger bus from Lomprayah to the pier near Don Sak and from there to Samui. 11.00 on Samui, but since you have to go to Ko Pha Ngan, stick to it for another hour (wait and sail). I paid for this ticket around 450 baht, bus and boat. To Pha Ngan around 500 baht pp I think. I thought this went pretty fast myself, little waiting and so in no time on the other side. My experience has been very different in Thailand, a lot of stopping, waiting and more waiting…Lomprayah knows what the deal is!
Dear Dennis,
I live here in the south of Thailand and travel back and forth here quite a bit. I would argue that your planning, in the order you describe, is not too good. I also want to point out that, as far as I know, "Krabi" is not an island ( Koh ) but is located on the mainland on the coast of the Andaman Sea.
It would be best to do the following with the least loss of time:
Upon arrival in BKK you immediately fly to Phuket, you can continue booking from your departure. From Phuket many options to continue to Koh Phi Phi and return to Phuket airport. From here you can fly to Koh Samui, but then you miss Krabi of course ..
From Phuket you can also go to Krabi by boat, if you also want to stay there. There is an airport in Krabi from where you can go to Koh Samui by plane…. you will stay a few days, of your own choice, on Koh Samui, which is worth it by the way. Hence no problem and various options to sail to Kog Phangang (about 1 hour sailing). You have to plan well to be on Koh Phangang during the “full moon” because you want to see the “full moon party”.
From Koh Phangang you can then, afterwards, either return to Koh Samui to take the plane to BKK and go back home. You can also, by Lomprayah from Koh Phangang to Chumphon. You can go from Chumphon (arrival in Pak Nam) by minibus to Chumphon airport, located in Pathiu. Keep in mind that from Chumphon Airport there is only a flight to Don Muang airport where shuttle buses to BKK are available. So easier to fly from Samui Airport to BKK, a flight almost every hour and duration about 1 hour.
Have fun traveling,
Lung addie
Your question is fast and not as cheap as possible.
I would then fly from Phuket to Samui.
50 minutes or so. then you all just have to take the ferry to
Phangan which is near the airport.
