Dear readers,

Does anyone know if there is some sort of crash course in English in Pattaya? Would love in September when I'm there on holiday, wish my daughter could learn a little English.

When I get there I'll know for sure if the money will be used for that course. My daughter is 10 years old.

Hope someone knows something there.

With kind regards,

tjerk

If I understand correctly your daughter does not live in Thailand.
According to my colleague Colin (an English teacher at my university), the best way to learn a language is to experience it daily. So: let your daughter enjoy her vacation and talk to her in English at set and agreed times and days. Supplement that with exercises via the internet (daily, no longer than 20 minutes, eg via the BBC website) and, for example, singing English songs that she likes.

That is of course the disadvantage if you are fluent in Thai and do not use English at home. It is surprising that she has not learned a word of English in 10 years. My own situation, English as the language of instruction at home, English-language primary and secondary school. Later Uni in UK. Result: fluent in 5 languages and Dutch and English from the age of about 5. The question is whether it is wise to just speak Thai for 10 years, so that the child has no idea of another language. Children pick up languages very easily. That will be much more difficult later.

      Right.
All studies emphasize that offering multiple languages to a child, especially at a very young age, has all the advantages, not only in terms of language but also for brain development.

She lives in Pattaya with her mother. I have paid for English lessons before, but that money has not been used for that. I'm going to Thailand for a month now, and I want her to learn English.

My girlfriend is an English teacher at a school in Samut Sakhon not far from Bangkok.
I can ask her to teach your daughter. It's not vacation time for her now.
Must be done on weekends I think.
But why should your daughter learn English. Few people speak English in Thailand.
    She better learn Thai.

Dear J Wolf, Agree with Marcus and don't understand why you say she should learn Thai better? The world is bigger than Thailand and the Thai language won't get you very far! I have a three-year-old daughter, my wife speaks Tagalog and English and I speak Dutch and German (because we live there in the summer). She turned 3 years old last week, but these 4 languages are a bonus…..for a start!

OK I see your daughter is Thai. My girlfriend is also Thai.
I don't know if Pattaya – Samut Sakhon is too far apart.

    Hi Tjerk,

In Pattaya there are many language schools where you can send (bring) your daughter (possibly also after your holiday if you just pay it first), I myself study near big C extra at Wallem and I know that they ( but certainly also at other schools) give private English lessons. If you want to know more about my school, you can respond to this and I will contact you via email.

    Yours faithfully,
    Robert
