Dear readers,

The Chinese New Year 2017 falls on January 28, 2017. We (me with 3 older children) arrive in Bangkok the day before and want to do a bike ride on the 28th in the morning. The plan is to fly to Phuket at the end of the afternoon.

Do we have to take anything into account because the 28th is a “Holiday”. Is it just like in the Netherlands that many companies are closed and flights have rejection flight times? Are there fireworks at midnight? If so, is that from 27th to 28th January – just like on New Year's Eve here?

If the Chinese New Year is very special in Bangkok, we can consider staying an extra night there.

Would love to hear your experiences and tips.

Sincerely,

Monique

Be sure to spend an evening at Wat Chalong on Phuket, where there is a large 'fair' during Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year is not a public holiday, so everything is open as normal. Although many Chinese businesses will be closed for a few days, because for them it is the most important event of the year.
This year it will be celebrated in a minor way by the death of the king

    Don't get the problem.
Chinese New Year is mainly celebrated by the many Chinese who have lived in Thailand for a long time and commerce plays into it, but otherwise normal life continues.
It is not Songkrang that is the Thai New Year which is celebrated on April 12, 13 and 14.

Official Songkran date is April 13, local dates vary.
