Dear readers,

We want to go from Kanchanaburi (if we have visited the River Kwai) by public transport to Phitsanulok. Can that be done directly or do you always have to go via Bangkok? And who knows a hotel there?

We want to go to Chiang Mai in stages, because the train is not an option for us. Please give good advice/ideas.

Yours faithfully,

Joke

    Directly I'm not quite sure.
But you don't have to go to Bangkok.

I myself once went from Kanchanaburi to Ayutthaya by bus, which was also not possible directly.
But had to change trains in Suphan Buri.

In Ayutthaya you can take the train to P'Lok in any case. But there will also be a bus connection.

You want to get to Chiang Mai in stages (plural)?. However, you do not indicate those stage points. So do you need -plural- Transport? Generally speaking, you can always get from A to B in Thailand by public transport. Somewhere always goes a mini bus. Information can be obtained at the Central Bus Station in Kanchanaburi.

A Hotel -there- . ? Where is -there-? Do you mean Phitsanulok or Kanchanaburi?.
TIP: Go to http://www.google.nl and type in Phitsanulok + Hotel. Then you can find your Hotel yourself on the Google answers in various sites.

    Dear Joke,
no that is not possible as far as I know, you will have to go via Nakhon Sawan, and change there or spend the night first and then continue, hotels around the bus station are enough and cheap, I also made this trip years ago, you take a bus, from the large bus station in the city of Kanchanaburi, you will have to ask around there, but be careful, many sellers will try to sell you a bus, but in principle there is just a timetable (in Thai style), it concerns the older medium-sized open buses, so no luxury air-conditioned buses, I think minibuses also go there, but I have no experience with that, they are also a bit less safe, take all the time and you will have a nice trip, I took the (stop) train from Phitsanalok to Chiangmai, I can recommend very beautiful nature / mountains on the way, but painfully slow, so no rush is recommended.
    have a good trip!

You don't have to go via Bangkok, but via Ayuthaya. You will have to transfer several times. I would not go to Phitsanulok, but to Sukhothai and then visit the beautiful Sukhothai Historical Park. Stay for a few days and take a beautiful bike ride through the countryside of Thailand.

From Sukhothai you can go to Chiang Mai via Tak or Phitsanulok. But there are also direct buses from Sukhothai.
