Reader question: Is postal delivery in Thailand reliable?
Dear readers,
Because we regularly stay in Thailand for longer periods, we naturally also make many friends, whom we sometimes want to surprise personally from the Netherlands with a card or letter in a way other than via the PC.
Now it has happened to me a few times that the mail I have sent does not arrive at all and this happens to several people in the Netherlands upon inquiry.
My question: Do more people have this experience and has action been taken?
Regards,
Roelof
To date, everything has always been received correctly, until recently something strange occurred, bank card “pin blocked” by the wrong card reader, card to my Belgian. sent by registered bank, arrived in good condition, unblocked, sent back by them registered, with tracking numbers so I could follow...., the day of delivery mailbox checked several times, also no offer on condo, 12 o'clock afternoon check again, nothing, but a young man postman who took a break and a drink.
The next day the same ritual, nothing, until suddenly afternoon delivery ticket in the bus, despite staying at home, but the strange thing is that the date of delivery of the day before was on it, although nothing had been deposited in the mailbox before ...
So to the post office far away at chayapruek (taxi 200 baht return for sloth postman/woman ..)
The letter in question was not found there at first until I told my story about the wrong date and suddenly present card in the bus !!,
After some consultation and inquiry with the lower deliverer, letter found ...., however, a very strange chosen envelope ... .. seemed to have been steamed open .., from the looks among each other I could also determine that something had not been normal .... all the more because I mentioned that I had been home all those 2 days and that it concerned a shipment from my bank with a bank card in …..
My suspicion is that one could see from the printed envelope that it was a bank shipment, probably hoping that it was a Thai ATM system card (swipe option ..) which was not, namely EU. chip card, and blocked for outside Europe... otherwise I suspect it would have been "happy shopping time"..... mistake by the bank to use a logo envelope instead of a blank envelope, tempting now...
However, everything is intact, as A) empty card, B) pin & chip enabled card, C) blocked outside Europe.... 3 times of bad luck for the THAI…this time.
First time in 7 years I experienced this, but yes putting the cat in the milk is not a good idea, people even keep shipments very neutral by registered mail!
My experience is that the Thai postal service is highly unreliable. Many banks (if not all) refuse to send bank cards, credit cards, etc. We once experienced that a Thai note was in the mailbox, which upon inquiry turned out to indicate that there was a letter for us at the post office that could not be delivered BECAUSE WE WERE NOT AT HOME! However, we were actually at home that day and the postman apparently could not ring the doorbell. After a long search, the letter in question was found at the post office: in a plastic bag. The letter was clearly unzipped with the finger and contained our new driver's licenses! The perpetrator clearly had no use for that and put them back in the Post!
There are safe ways. DHL has two rates, but you should not use the cheap one: then the postal item in Thailand will be transferred to the Thai Mail and you will therefore be out of luck. The more expensive version is probably reliable. There is also TNT, but I have no experience with that.
The best remains: give with an acquaintance: reliable and MUCH faster.
Personally, I have not had any bad experiences with the Thai post. One time faster than the other time. I also read many complaints in the Thai newspapers, but they usually come from the interior. I think it's not too bad in the larger cities and tourist areas. But a good address is necessary and that is quite extensive in Thailand.
Exactly Bob, a good address but that is not so simple. The Thai addresses do not fit in the boxes with automated addressing, usually the destination country is missing. Had a tax assessment, the letter had been in many countries but arrived after 3 months. The misery with the late payment …………..explain that.
Yes, the postal service could be a lot better here, recently I had to receive a package (Hua Hin), the package did not arrive, thanks to the tracking I was able to locate the package in “the post office”, and when I inquired in the post office I had to go to the parcel distribution center is 4 km further, and yes, it had already arrived there many days ago.
They don't bother at all to send you a message that the package has arrived!
The ING sent me a credit card 3 times (registered) and one arrived after 6 weeks.
I have the same problem from Belgium, nothing arrives, no idea where that post is kept behind!!
Registered mail would arrive!!
If you send the shipment “registered”, nothing will ever go wrong. You can simply follow the shipment via Trace and Track of the Thai or Dutch post.
I have lived here for almost 7 years and have never lost a mail item.
If you drop off the mail at a post office, and you have it sent by airmail, it always arrives at my place. And if they send my mail from the Netherlands with a priority sticker, it always arrives..
Why do Thai companies send all their parcels, samples, etc by courier service and NEVER NEVER by post?
Own experience, some years ago: posted on Don Muang, in the afternoon or even in the evening, was faster in Breda than by DHL.
Never lost a letter, package or whatever, but posted through the post office in Bangkok.
And I have been doing business with Thailand since 1993.
Hello Roelf
If you want to send mail to Thailand, try to have the name and address of the person for whom the mail is intended written in Thai when you are in Thailand.
Scanning on your computer at home and printing on your mail will always arrive.
Many of the postmen, especially in small towns, cannot read English, so the mail remains somewhere at a head office.
greeting
jo
Thanks Jo….a good tip we will take advantage of this.
Is indeed the best an address in our alphabet gives the impression to the Thai that it contains something valuable
Indeed Jo, that's pretty much how we do it too, addressing with 2 labels, 1x in Western readable script and 1x in Thai script. Never lost anything. Always have important items sent to family in the Netherlands first, then have them repackage them “blank” and forward them with the aforementioned double addressing.
Regards, Paul Schiphol
Totally agree with you. Our mail and packages always arrive. The address is always written in English AND Thai.
Regards, Marianne
When I send something from Singapore I can be sure that my shipment will arrive in Europe or America 7 days later.. with mail from Thailand you have to count on 3 to 4 weeks. Mail from abroad will only arrive quickly or reasonably quickly if you send it by registered mail and urgently. Or use a courier, that's the surest thing
If they stick a priority sticker on the envelope from the Netherlands, it always gets to me. I always got at least 2 bank statements a week and never missed 1. Always by air mail from here. Only a few baht more expensive. And always arrives.
To date, all mail arrives to us, sometimes in 1 week, sometimes in 2 weeks or longer. I once experienced that the mail was opened, I had put a 1 THB note in it just to be nice, but apparently they can smell that or something and the envelope was closed again with adhesive tape! Money by post, so don't do that. A passport with visa from the embassy arrives quickly, within 1000 days. Sometimes a postman stops to say that there is no mail for the farang... oh well, a chat and a glass of water and then we're off again.
Good Morning,
My mail to Khorat always arrives; documents registered and things for my
granddaughter I put in a padded envelope (letterbox size)!; I write the address
large on label; below that I also paste the address in Thai. My son sent it to me by email
sent, print it out and make copies of it. Works very well. There is in three years
time never lost anything. Sometimes it goes very fast, sent Monday afternoon, the
on Saturday in Khorat, sometimes it takes 2 weeks.
Regards, Inge
Mail from Belgium does not always arrive and when it arrives the letter has been opened.
here in khon kaen they are looking for valuable things.
Last year from January to October no normal mail delivery in our village. The postman was transferred to the city and no replacement. After a few months there was a replacement, but it took so long to sort that there was no time to deliver. I found out in February because my annual life-side statement was a bit long gone. Inquiry learned that a 2nd request had already been sent.
After that I went to the post office every day and got my mail.
After I asked if I could take pictures inside, which caused quite a commotion, my mail was neatly put aside.
After a few months the mail sometimes came 1 or 2 times a week. Finally after 10 months it functioned normally again. The undelivered, but sorted mail was never delivered later.
Just short and sweet, Very unreliable. Many never arrive. Despite many complaints and visits
at the post office in the region. But that is of no use. Mail from SVB, CZ Insurance, etc. rarely arrives.
Success with it.
Have you heard from someone that if you live very far back and there is not much mail there, no one is going to deliver those few letters. Just go to the post office and give your address to an employee and ask him to see if there is mail for you. Always worked for me and never had a problem with anything disappearing.
Sent something once and never arrived. Turned out to be the address. Apparently you not only have to correctly write the name of the street/soi, but also the district and the nearest avenue (road). If you don't do this, it won't arrive at all, even if the zip code is correct.
I also suffer from poor delivery ( district Khon Kean ) ; letters do not arrive , but it is striking that in the last 2 years only 2 magzines de Tegel from NVT have arrived . Very annoying as I always look forward to that.
I occasionally lose mail from the Netherlands.
It seems that this is always handwritten mail.
Apparently, the postman can still decipher printed text, but not handwritten text (lower case?).
Usually the (all) cards sent, from Patong and Jomtien Beach, reached their Dutch destination before I was back home. Use printed address stickers!
Only one (1) mail from Bangkok (2005) failed to arrive.
I have a POBox just to be sure, especially from the Netherlands everything arrives. However, you can forget about the Thai bank or insurance, they all sent to the home address on my wife's ID card. I'm in the process of rebuilding all of this right now. Bangkok-Chanthaburi takes longer than Holland-Chanthaburi.
My experience is also that the postman only leaves at 2 o'clock and goes home at 4 o'clock and, yes right, takes the undistributed mail home for the next day. Letters half eaten by bugs and mail that never arrives!
I also have the address in Thai and then make a printout and stick both on it, everyone should be able to read it like this. The first time I sent mail to Thailand I stuck a photo of the blue name / address sign on it, that also worked….
Thanks everyone for the responses and tips.
We take the cards to the post office and see that they are stamped. Stamps are collected and sold again. If we take the mail to the post office itself, it will go well.
Package from NL never arrived. Finally ended up in NL again.
Another package has been missing for weeks.
Several letters from Germany (correctly addressed) never arrived at the Thailand address.
Registered shipping or sending by courier (track + trace) is best
If a registered letter arrives and you are not at home, they just have the neighbor or a monk sign.
When I complain to the post office, I get the answer that everyone can sign! ! !
When it rains, the mail is only delivered once a week in the mountains.
Otherwise it will get wet and it will save fuel for its moped.
Because he only gets X amount of fuel allowance.
I could write a book about the post alone.
A bank card (from an empty account ..) sent to Thailand, never arrived ..!
Coincidentally received a New Year's card that was not ordered today, was sent on 16.12.2003 to an address in Bangkok. Has been on the road for over 11,5 years and apparently never delivered. The sender, my partner, passed away 5 years ago.
I have rented a mailbox at our local post office for many years.
Works fine I must say, only sometimes there is mail from other farangs who live here.
But I will return it directly to the counter .
The reason I have a postbox is the following story.
When I first came to live here permanently, it was already 11 years ago.
Did the postman bring the mail home , or so I thought .
At one point I received a serious threatening letter from the Dutch tax authorities with a fine imposed, stating that after repeating assessments imposed by the tax authorities several times, I had not met my outstanding tax obligations in the Netherlands.
So I didn't respond.
As it turned out later , my spouse found out through other people who live in our Moo .
The postman in my district had a major alcohol problem.
Many postal items, not only from me, were at his house and at set times the fire went into it.
That's what his neighbor told later.
When I heard this, my spouse and I entered the post office with a very large tarpaulin.
The post master recognized this problem for a long time , so knew about it .
They had warned him many times to stop drinking , but he continued .
As befits a good alcoholic .
He had a family with two children who went to school, and his colleagues therefore kept a hand above his head.
We did not go to the police to report it , but he was fired a few weeks later .
After his resignation, my mailbox was suddenly full at set times with mail sent from the Netherlands months ago.
They are smart, the last mail found at his house was therefore sent to me in dribs and drabs.
This is to give the impression that everything is functioning normally again.
I then explained the situation to the Dutch tax authorities, but the whole affair cost me a few Euros anyway.
That is why I decided, based on the advice of the newly appointed postmaster, to rent a Postbox, which is not expensive.
And haven't had any problems since.
Very occasionally I sometimes miss a bank statement from a Dutch bank or a new year card from friends and acquaintances.
But yes , things sometimes go wrong everywhere .
Jan Beute.
It has happened to me several times, recently a bank card did not arrive and neither did a package from America, they kept it well, I think I think this is a very bad thing, I also received an email explaining why I did not have proof of being alive. sent never arrived.Amazing Thailand.
Well then you have a lot of bad luck, I never have problems myself and I am sometimes amazed at how fast it all goes.
Indeed this is a big problem, it is the Postmen who are unreliable. A few years ago I did not receive all my mail from abroad for ONE YEAR, letters from the NL Tax were with and others. All these letters were sent by registered mail. The brother (is Lawyer) of a Belgian's Thai wife then filed a complaint against the Postal Service and it was resolved in no time. It turned out that the Postman opened all foreign letters to see if they contained anything of value and then threw these letters away. It still happens that some letters are not delivered. I now receive the AOW and Pension Fund life certificate by e-mail and can return it by e-mail. I have many more sad stories about this Thai Post Office.
To the post office with 15 beautiful maps of the area in Pattaya, ask for stamps, they say leave the maps here sir, we will stick the stamps on them when we have time, yes.
Never 1 card arrived. Nice extra income.
Always have important mail sent by registered mail and to a good address in Thailand!
Dear people, I receive packages from abroad every day with the Thai post, never a missed package,
but good advice always put your personal telephone number on the note or package it often happens that they just can't find the address and then they call you to ask where you live, something can be that easy.

I have the same sad experience, just found REGISTERED letters in my mailbox, so they were not signed by me for receipt. Also late, only after 6 weeks!
3 shipments from Hong Kong with tracking No's never received, went to the post office, they checked it on the p\PC and told me “has been delivered” but not to me?
A package with CD from the Netherlands, of which I unfortunately do not have a tracking number, did not arrive either, furthermore 2 x a package with magazines and 2 letters from Spain never arrived. And it is possible because 10 years ago my daughter sent magazines and those were here in Hua-Hin for 4 to 5 days, but it is mainly going, I hear that here, in Hua Hin getting worse.
Best regards from Hua-Hin
