Reader question: What about pollen allergies in Thailand?

Dear readers,

I would like to know about pollen allergy and hay fever in Thailand. Is that less or more? A certain period of the year like here?

Are there people who suffer a lot in the Netherlands but hardly in Thailand?

Then I know how much medicine to take with me on holiday.

Thank you for your advice.

Greetings,

Agnes

Allergies are just as common in Thailand as in the Netherlands, they have increased sharply in the last 10-20 years (as in the Netherlands). Indoor allergies can be, much like in the Netherlands: house dust mites (by far the most important), cockroaches, cats and dogs. Pollen and spores are the allergens that cause allergic reactions outdoors, such as hay fever. For Thailand, grass pollen is also the main cause.
Pollen and spores are present in Thailand all year round, but in greater quantities (3-4 times as much) in the months of November-December-January. Allergies are very specific to a certain type of pollen. I've heard stories from people who had more or less trouble here, you can't make a statement about that in an individual case, like yours. So you will have to take your usual medicines with you. but it may well be that you are not bothered at all or more. Also read the links:

In Thailand you suffer less from Pollen Allergy, this is because there are fewer flowers, grass, trees and shrub Pollen in Thailand than in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands you have about 24 different Pollen which entails more sensitivity in one person than in the other. I myself am a very sensitive Pollen patient, but when I travel to Thailand this has completely disappeared, especially if one visits the coastal areas.

I'm already an ouch Hap. And I've suffered from hay fever all my life. But in Th I have NO trouble from day one.

I have been going to Thailand every year since 1999 and am a hay fever and asthma sufferer. As soon as I land in Bangkok my complaints stop. Now I always go in July and August, but also in the south of Malaysia where it is not the rainy season, it does not bother me at all. It's okay to bring some medications for mental reassurance, but assume you don't need to use them. I don't take my medicines with me.

I am staying in phuket. In the Netherlands I suffer a lot from allergies, headache throat stuffy nose, say flu symptoms. In Thailand NO problems, even the allergy to cats is almost reduced. Back in the Netherlands it starts again after 1 or 2 days. Am for almost allegies in the Netherlands, so phuket is a blessing without medicines. greetings will

I have been living in Thailand for 6 years now and never suffer from hay fever. Just returned to the Netherlands from 13 to 25 April for the first time and nothing but watery eyes and sneezing. Back here in Pattaya for 2 days (maybe more sea air) and no more pain.

My wife suffers from hay fever in Belgium and none of that in Thailand. We live in downtown Bangkok. Nice! Would you like a medical statement?

I too always suffer from hay fever during the pollen season in the Netherlands from May to August and always have to take medication (Zyrtec)
In Thailand I have never had any problems.. in any month.
I see that all other responses also indicate that they do not suffer from hay fever in Thailand.
I think, Tino, that there are other pollen in the Netherlands given all these reactions.

Contrary to the previous responses: in the Netherlands I suffer terribly from hay fever in the well-known months, in Thailand just as much, if not worse, except in the rainy season then I have almost no problems, but in the Thai spring, November , Dec, Jan and Feb, so the dry period is also unbearable for me, when the hot season starts it will decrease and in the rainy season I am as good as hay fever free.
By the way, it also depends on the wind and where you are, on Lanta with sea wind, almost no problem, on the mainland; horrible.

    Yours faithfully,

    Lex K.

I can fully underline Lex K.'s reaction. In the Netherlands I suffer from it, but in Thailand just a little more. The month of February was so bad that even a few small veins in my left eye popped. Not too bad, but very annoying. Everything will be different at sea, but that is also the case in the Netherlands.
Please bring your own medicines for safety!

Can I still be 'negative' for a while? Although not personally because I don't have a pollen allergy myself and I lack the details, but what I do know is that a cousin of mine who traveled through Thailand with some friends as a backpacker never wants to go there again, he was terribly bothered by it.
