Home » Reader question » Reader question: Can I remove old visa stickers from my passport?
Dear readers,
I live in Thailand and need to renew my passport. Not because that passport has expired, must actually renew passport before 02-09-2015, but because it is full of visa stickers for Cambodia. But now some stickers are peeling off.
Can I remove these stickers so that new visa stickers can replace them or do I have to apply for a new passport?
Thanks in advance,
Geert
As far as I can tell, it is illegal to change anything in your passport yourself. You can get into real trouble with that. I would call the embassy to inquire about this if I were you.
That strikes me as a special link. Suppose all those visas are registered in a database and your next application shows that you have removed visa stickers from your passport. I wouldn't take that risk. And what are you actually going to lose financially? Another six months to go is a loss of a few tens at the most.
I advise against it.
Call the Dutch embassy in Bangkok, ask the question and post the answer here as well.
Geert, why not put a packing tape over it or some glue underneath to glue them back?
You live in Thailand, so they are probably old visas for Cambodia that are no longer valid.
As soon as you have a new Dutch passport, I don't think anyone will look at old visas for Cambodia anymore, they will not be included in your new Dutch passport. Or am I overlooking something here?
Nico B
No that is not allowed. The passport is the property of the State of the Netherlands. You are not allowed to make any changes to it yourself, including removing VISA. Leave it as it is. It's punishable. Your passport CAN be taken and you really have the dolls dancing. So don't. As said, go to the Dutch embassy. Very simple right. For example, may I make notes in your borrowed book. I don't like you. Neither does your passport!!
You are not allowed to modify your passport. But of course you can't do anything about what spontaneously falls out!
I have a few lines to complete, so please wait for the answer.
Can you pick out the stickers?
Short answer: NO.
Visa stickers are part of the passport, and you are not allowed to take anything out of it, attach it, tear out leaves, and so on.
You are not allowed to make any changes to your passport yourself
there must be at least 1 blank page in your passport for a new visa application
passport must be valid for another 15 months when applying for a new annual visa for Thailand. At 2 Sept. so you don't get that anymore.
If you travel often, apply for a business passport or a second passport. There are options for that.
Morning Ko,
We got a new retirement visa at the end of May and our passport must be renewed before 09-10-2014.
So that's only 5 months.
The immigration officer reminded us not to forget to renew everything.
So who knows can say it.
And now that the passport is valid for 10 years, I advise anyone who goes out of the country a lot to take a passport with more pages, otherwise you won't even make it to 10 years.
Normally 25-30 I thought, but then about double.
I don't know the exact numbers, but one can easily find out.
Asia loves stamps and stickers.
Just look at the immigration burros.
LOUISE
Louise, I don't know the details yet, but it seems to be possible that when applying for a new passport you can also tick ... business. Then you get a passport with a double number of pages, otherwise the passport would be exactly the same as the private passport. That would pretty much solve the problem. If anyone knows this and has experience with this I'd love to hear it.
Nico B
Louise, my passport expires in mid-2016. In Hua Hin I was informed a few weeks ago that next time I cannot get a 1-year visa, but only until the expiry of my passport and was advised to apply in 2015 (for applying for a new annual visa) to apply for a new passport. New passport, new visa! Anyway, a lot is possible in this country. Have you checked until when your visa is valid? You now run the risk of having to pay 1900 baht twice within a few months. Of course you get your visa but is it also for 1 year?
No, have you not yet noticed that people always stamp the visa stamp a little over the edge…., that was done to avoid what you want to do, so there are traces of it !! Glue it down with a dry glue stick and it's ok again, otherwise we would all be able to continue with our Visas in SEAsia for a very long time, and daddy will of course miss income.
Do you also have a question about the first single page after the ID page, which is never used for visas, but may be used in an emergency, for example, or a departure stamp on it ….?
@David H
Regarding your question (and as far as a Belgian passport is concerned)
The page 3 (after the plastic page) appears empty, but it is not.
This page contains examples of some of the security details that are included in the passport, and which they advise you to check.
So it is not a visa page.
The word is on the pages that may be used for visas, stamps or other comments
“visas”. Those are pages 5 to 30 on a regular passport.
Of course, if an authorized official puts a stamp on page 3, it is not your fault…..
@Geert (questioner)
The last page of a Belgian passport states that only an authorized official may make changes to it.
But even without that note, it's never a good idea to make changes to a passport, remove stickers, or make repairs. even if it is with the best intentions.
So I wouldn't put tape over it either, because it will almost certainly raise questions about what's underneath and whether you want to hide anything. It may take a while before you pass through immigration.
Tip – I don't know where you live, so maybe it's too far away for you, but recently I made a visa run from Bangkok to Htee Khee (Myanmar) This is not far from Kanchanaburi.
You will not get a visa pasted or stamped in your passport from Myanmar like in Laos and Cambodia.
Only Arrival/Departure stamps are received from the immigration posts Htee Khee and Kanchanaburi.
This way you save the visa pages, especially now that the passports remain valid for 10 years.
I made a little report of it.
You can read this in my response to the article below.
https://www.thailandblog.nl/expats-en-pensionado/visa/ervaringen-met-een-visa-run-vanuit-bangkok/
Perhaps to consider if it is practically feasible from your place of residence.
@RonnyLatPhrao, sorry, I miswrote myself a bit, I meant right page 5 (the few with the left "comments from competent authorities" ) which always remains unused, understand that people prefer not to place visa stickers there, but may / can this page in an emergency as a last resort ? For example for simple in & outs, for example if your passport would be full ..; (is not applicable for me because I already renew a small number of pages long before the expiration date), but it is good to know as an extreme emergency solution.
If you look again in BE. manages to get a government on its feet…..and it also starts working, and ratifies the new approved laws, then our passport would also be valid for 10 years, provided that an intermediate solution “à la Belge” is Could. decides to temporarily increase it to 7 years, this was answered by the person who submitted this bill. (Guido De padt)…..de “à la Belge” of course not, that is my added sarcasm, why we BE. just don't do what our neighboring countries NL & UK have recently adjusted to make their passports valid for 10 years, my additional question to his services at the time was also why a multi-page passport must be so incredibly expensive, could it also be done as a normal application? be treated….without that urgent TAX, we expats “devour” namely pages to meet the standards!
