Reader question: We would like to meet Dutch people in Thailand who live there semi-permanently
Dear readers,
We have the idea of leaving for Thailand for a longer period of time (overwintering) or semi-permanently. At the beginning of 2016 we will go to Thailand for orientation for 4 weeks, not directly as a tourist but in a rented house instead of a hotel to feel and experience how things are going now.
In addition, we would like to meet a number of people and have a personal conversation who have also taken the step and have been living in Thailand for a few years.
The places we visit are: Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and then we still have doubts about Hua Hin or Rayong.
If anyone wants to talk to us about convincing or not, we would like to get in touch with you to hear the story and to present our questions to you personally instead of e-mail.
Looking forward to your responses, best regards,
Ben

Hi Wilco,
We investigate Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hua Hin or Rayong.
If you are open to a conversation, I would love to hear from you, that also applies to other places.
My preference is for Chiang Mai.
Yours faithfully,
Ben
Hi Ben, I have been to all the places you mentioned, I have been living in cha-am for 2 years now, which is 25 further north than HuaHin, but is cheaper and quieter.
Please note that it can be chilly in Chang Mai in winter.
Hi Ben,
Where in Thailand do you think you will settle?
Hi Adam,
Are you the Aad who regularly visits his son living above Chiang Mai?
I have lost the name of the place, but you reported it two weeks ago.
Would like to get in touch with you.
Regards,
Ben
Yes, my name is Aart, every year in November I visit my son. Also three weeks this November
also think of Chiang Rai not too big and not small
many Dutch people live Chiang Mai is busy (traffic environment) and is more expensive
I have been wintering in Hua Hin for 9 years now and would like to share my experiences with you personally. I have been coming to Thailand for more than 30 years and practically know all the places there. just send me an email.
Hello Frank,
Do you happen to have an email address for me?
Regards,
Ben
You are very welcome in the North of Thailand. Thaton, where I've lived in a rented house for eight years and love it.
l
I myself am planning to move to Thailand in the course of next year.
I had both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai on my list, but not Thaton yet.
I'll be in Thailand around the end of September then I'll have to take a look in Thaton as well.
Bye Boy, we are going mid-January 2016. Are you still there?
Regards,
Ben
Hi Boy,
We will be there mid-January 2016, will you still be there?
Regards,
Ben
Hi Lisbeth,
Thank you very much for your offer, how can we further agree?
My email address is [email protected]
We are still busy preparing, but we want to complete the visit list in mid-October.
Yours faithfully,
Ben
Unfortunately, I am already in the Netherlands.
But I hope to live in Thailand around this time next year.
I wish you the best of luck with your search in January.
With regards
boy
I think there are only a few Dutch people who stay semi-permanently on Phuket. Krabi may already be not much different. The cost of living on Phuket is many times more expensive than elsewhere in Thailand. Even the very touristy Pattaya is much cheaper to live than Phuket. You pay more money for the most basic. It is therefore not about luxury items or services. Everything is much more expensive.
As far as I know, most semi-permanently settled Dutch people live in Bangkok, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. And further of course spread across the country, many already in the birth region of a possible Thai partner.
What nonsense. Yes, Phuket is more expensive than most other places, but certainly not “many times” and certainly not for basic things. You can also have lunch (Thai) here for 60 B, as long as you don't go to the more expensive restaurants (intended for tourists) and don't order expensive wines. I buy a lot on the market, which is fine and not expensive. Depending on the luxury you want, the location and the time of year, you can't rent here for too much: I pay B8.000 - €215 per month for a nice house, 2 bedrooms, living room, decent kitchen, bathroom with shower and toilet and garden with small sala.
And quite a lot of Dutch people live there, although they are reasonably to very well off.
The climate is wonderful, beautiful beaches and beautiful nature. And ……….I don't like coming to Patong – just as I don't like Pattaya.
Hi Rene,
Thank you for your explanation and answer.
Would it suit you if we meet in Phuket in January?
This may be in your home or outside.
Yours faithfully,
Ben
Hi Willem, where do you have your accommodation, what place and are you willing to receive us?
Regards,
Ben
We live with the whole family in Tha Mai (near Chanthaburi) full of nature not far from a clean sea, not many Farangs, the children are now getting bigger and flying off to universities in Krathing and BKK, but we are NOT allowed to sell our own designed house , they still want to escape BKK and can rest and breathe.
For us, Hua Hin was too expensive 10 years ago (prices by Dutch standards) and I didn't want to live in those Faran cities, now we occasionally go to Pattaya for a weekend and then quickly back home!
Want to know more just ask [email protected]
khon kaen is also an option.
i have been to Krabi last year.
Super Island. not too touristy like the other islands.
I could live there personally.
if me and my wife can manage to live in thailand in the future. (my wife currently lives in bangkok and i live in the netherlands), then it will probably be something like chiang rai. My wife's mother lives in Phayao and offered us as land, but I would not want to stay there permanently in the long term. That is literally at the bottom of a mountain and too remote.
Regards Chris
I don't go there often and don't know much about that region, but have I always thought that Krabi is a city and a province but not a (super) island? There are of course the Krabi islands.
Maybe someone can clarify it for me, because I often read that people write "the island of Krabi" or do they mean Koh Lanta?
