Home » Reader question » Reader question: Where in the Netherlands can I buy Pa-Laa (fermented fish)?
Dear readers,
My Thai girlfriend is in the Netherlands for 90 days and cooks her own Isan meal every day. Now she misses the fermented fish. I don't know if you spell it right, but you pronounce it Pa-Laa. It smells really bad though.
We have already looked in various Toko's and could not find it. Also tried Google.
Does anyone know if it can be ordered online? My girlfriend will be happy with it.
Regards,
John
Officially it is called น้ำปลาร้า náam plaa ráa (high, middle, high-pitched, 'water-fish-fermented')) or in Isan ปลาแดก plaa dàek, fermented fish sauce. There are also many varieties in Thailand. Can be found in the larger supermarkets, but perhaps not the same as the 'original' Thai product with a high percentage of fish (and salt).

This man is not looking for name plaa but pla raa… Fermented fish and not the fish sauce
You are absolutely right. Two different things. Sorry.
http://seingthai.com/wordpress/
I think they do have that there, there are at least 5 toko's in that street… good luck
If it doesn't work with the PA-LAA, you can buy TRASSIE in an Indian shop, fermented shrimp made into a paste, has the same effect.
john,
in Dordrecht it is for sale at the asian food shop on the Voorstraat.
Opposite the old town hall.
Can be purchased in every Thai shop in Belgium. Also, for example, in Antwerp in the Vanwesenbekestraat. Sold in glass jars and is an imported product. It is cleaner than the well-known brown smelly mass from the Isan. But both are delicious in pokpok… So I think the stuff is also for sale in the Netherlands… Many Thai people make it themselves and also go crab hunting in the North Sea… You'll find out.
Hello John, I don't know where you stay, but in Ansterdam near the Nieuwmarkt square and adjacent Geldersekade you have Chinese supermarkets where my wife buys it and in the Koningsstraat (side street Nieuwmarkt) there is a Thai shop.
Don't know if they also sell online.
Good luck!
I don't think you can find Pla-ra in a normal toko or Asian supermarket. I have never seen it anywhere in The Hague. The Thai I know make it themselves or get it from friends.
Have a look in Thai-Dutch facebook groups if you can get it there? Everything is offered there. For example this group:

Thai shop
Address: Koningsstraat 42, 1011 EW Amsterdam
It is also very unhealthy. There have been studies on food from Palaa and they have shown that. If not prepared properly, food poisoning can occur and people have died.
You better eat Somtam Thai that is without Palaa and those little crabs.
Of course it is not the same, but the Indonesian 'trassi' is well available in the Netherlands. Trassi (terasi) are small shrimps that have been fermented, but the taste is more reminiscent of fish than shrimp. Trassi is also salty and its smell is – to put it mildly – pungent. Trassi is probably more dried out and therefore harder than the “Paa Laa” your girlfriend is used to. This is probably due to the fact that it has to come from far away and therefore has to have a longer shelf life. A drier form simply has a longer shelf life.
About 65 years ago my father was a mate and stationed in Surabaja, Indonesia. If he had transported a shipload of trassi, he was much less welcome when he returned home than was the case on other occasions. The smell of that stuff always lingers around someone for a while. Much, much more than is the case with garlic, for example.

To be sure, my wife always gets it there, but canned of course
My wife makes it here in the Netherlands and sells it via Facebook. Search plara holland and send a pm
You can buy it at the Orientale, Vietnamese or Thai toko's, that is the "watery" version.
Another option is to buy from another Thai lady, most of them make something similar (thicker) themselves from fish from the market and that stuff does indeed smell strong.
see if jars are good for her: “pickled gourami fish”
Dear John, what part of the country do you live in? My wife makes this Pa Laa herself and sells it within her Thai circle of acquaintances. Let me know. [email protected]
Hi John at http://www.orientelwebscop.nl or at the Chinese shop at the Euromast Rotterdam
Or do you mean https://www.orientalwebshop.nl/ ?
Hi,
I think this is what she's looking for: https://www.orientalwebshop.nl/conserven/vis/pantainorasingh-pickled-gouramy-fish-454g
The ladies with me often used this for making som tam pala.
Online supermarket with many Asian products.
Success with it.
Best regards. Wim
try mythaishop.nl or tokothai.nl who deliver throughout the Netherlands.
they will have it but not as a self-made name plaa raa
All Amazing Oriental stores throughout NL sell it. Sitting in every major city.
https://www.amazingoriental.com
Also available in Antwerp, Brussels etc. I don't know where you live, but it's for sale in abundance.
As mentioned in previous responses: it is for sale in Oriental stores
Located in several places around the country
My Thai wife always makes it herself, more taste, she says
Buy small horse mackerels at the fish market, 1 or 2 kilos
Wash them thoroughly, clean them well, work very hygienically !!!
Then put them in a sealed container with the necessary ingredients in the refrigerator for a few days
Turn occasionally , everything must remain under the liquid !
Then you can divide everything into large glass jars and store tightly closed
My wife buys it from Amazing Oriental. It has several branches in the Netherlands. Probably also in your area.
take a look at Toonhouse Orientel products, you can also call 06-25191507. this lady from Thailand imports Thai ingredients etc.
