Dear readers,

My wife has been busy for 2 days making food packages to hang in the tree. This is done once a year to appease the spirits. Everything goes in it, fruit, fish but also cigarettes because maybe the spirit has smoked.

Is there anyone who can explain this day historically?

Thank you in advance,

Kees

  1. Ko says up

It is a festival of the Hindus in the world, so also in Thailand. Historically, many customs of this festival will have crept into everyday Thailand. This may be through mixed marriages or simply because the customs of this festival fit well with the national character of the Thai. And .. it doesn't benefit, it doesn't hurt either.

    Pitra Paksh
Date: Tuesday 9 to Tuesday 23 September 2014
    Country / Region: World (Hindus)
    Type: Religious
    Religion: Hinduism

    Hindoism

The dark (Krishna Paksha) half of the month of Asvina. With the new moon of the month Asvina (September/October) it is time for the commemoration of the deceased parents and relatives (pitries). Also: Pitra Paksh or Pitra Paksha.

Services and ceremonies are held in which the death offerings (straahas) are central.

Hindus have obligations towards their parents and ancestors, the Pitri-rina. The debt to the parents is paid off by providing for them in their old age and by honoring them during worship services, pujas. A residual debt is paid off with Pitri Poedja. The ancestors receive food and flowers as offerings and mantras are recited. The ancestors will then vouch for the well-being of their descendants in the coming year.
