Reader question: Is there a monk on Koh Samui who tattoos?
Dear readers,
Does anyone here know if there is a monk on Koh Samui who tattoos?
I am going to Thailand again in May and would like to get tattooed by a monk. I want to have it done on the last day of my holiday, hence my question if that is possible on Koh Samui?
Thank you in advance.
Greetings,
Anita
Hello Anita,
My Thai wife had a religious image tattooed on her back by an ex-monk on Samui (Lamai). This was done with a hammer with needles. She did not have this done with ink, but with oil. This is no longer visible, she is purely concerned with the deeper meaning. If you are purely concerned with a tattoo of the lines without a deep meaning then you can go to any tattoo shop. A tattoo with a machine is much clearer than the one with a hammer with needles. The ex monk's name is Panthep, his website is samuisakyan.com. Since it is viewed on the basis of your date of birth, etc. where the tattoo should be placed and whether you have made the right choice, you must contact us in advance. This monk also donates part of his arrivals to a temple in Lamai. Since a monk is not allowed to touch women, tattooing is only done by former monks. You should have known this. If you don't have a religious background and only do it because it's special or fun, you better opt for a Mickey mouse.
Dear Renevan,
I asked if anyone knows a monk who tattoos on Koh Samui and not your personal opinion.
A monk is not allowed to touch a woman, so in all of Thailand you will not be able to find a monk who wants to tattoo you.
A (real) monk will never tattoo a woman, because he is not allowed to touch a woman. Those who do are cheaters.
Dear Anita,
I know plenty of monks who tattoo in Thailand, but none and I repeat and emphasize not a monk, will touch a woman let alone tattoo, this will be a vain search and if you already find a "monk" who wants to tattoo you, it is there one who has disembodied and does it purely for commercial reasons, or is a charlatan in any other way, so there is absolutely no value to the tattoo, if you tell someone that the tattoo was done by a Thai monk, they will look at you and thinking; another tourist who has been fooled.
Yours faithfully,
Lex K.
A non-secular monk will not tattoo a woman. Under penalty of arrest and banishment from the Order. Departed monks, on the other hand, do, or also have contact and connection with Buddhist rituals in all sorts of other serious ways. On Samui I do not know whether a secular monk is engaged in religious applications.
I do know that in Pathum Thani, about 65 km from Bangkok, this is the case. See: http://www.oknation.net/blog/thephoto/2009/04/25/entry-1
Mind you: this center is grand, it is extremely professional, and you can't just walk in one day. Contact us in advance, and make a day or three free. The website shows, among other things, which technique is used and how religiously embedded the performance is. Doesn't come with a hammer.
