Can you also drive a motorbike on the highway?

Dear readers,

This time, when I visit Thailand, I want to rent a motorbike and drive at least from Chiang Mai to Pai. There is also a plan to drive the Mae Hong Son Loop.

The only thing I can't find anywhere is whether you can drive the motorcycle on all roads. I heard from friends of mine that a motorcycle is not allowed on all highways. They always drive through from Pattaya to Bangkok. It seems a bit strange that this is not allowed?

Perhaps there is someone who also rides a motorcycle in Thailand or has an answer to my question?

We once had a motorcycle riding Finnish neighbor who drove a green Kawasaki I think 250 or 300 cc and he was taken off the highway somewhere towards Bangkok and escorted to a place where he was allowed to drive. In some places there are signs that motorcycles are not allowed to drive, they showed it to him. And therefore also applies to slightly heavier motorcycles, than motorcycles of 100-125 cc.

Motorcycles are not allowed on the highway. BV Highway no. 7.
You will be stopped at the toll gates.
But on other roads eg road no.36.

As far as I know, a motorcycle/scooter is not allowed to drive on the toll roads. They are allowed on all other roads.

the route from Chiangmai to Pai is an ordinary provincial road.
Certainly not a highway or highway. Note about 700 curves.
If you want to do the MaeHongSon loop, the same applies. Just doable with the motorbike 125 cc.
    Wonderful tour, highly recommended.
    Welcome to Thailand

What do you mean highway? I drove a 110 cc engine in the Isaan for years and was allowed to drive on any road. But I can imagine that around the largest cities there are toll roads where you are not allowed to use a two-wheeler. Then there are signs, I read, and you look for another highway. There are plenty in this country. So don't worry, you can go anywhere even with a 110cc engine.

    Best ??

Indeed, there are (usually) toll roads where you are not allowed to drive a motorcycle, there is also a sign "prohibited for motorcycles" the same as in the Netherlands.

In Chiang Mai (and I've lived there for many years), you don't have that.
From Chiang Mai to Pai or the Mae Hong Son Loop, (is several days) you can easily drive a motorbike of 150cc or more, these are available for rent in Chiang Mai.

It is very wise to first stay a few nights in the Dutch Guesthouse, there are many Dutch people there and many know important things.

Herbert the owner "arranges" a motorbike for you, with very good insurance and a collection service when the motorbike stops, this is incredibly important.

A few times already I went through the tunnel at Pattaya Klang. That shouldn't be. I wasn't the only one. But that doesn't give permission.

I once had a ticket at the toll on the Pattaya-Bangkok highway when I drove a Honda motorcycle there.
5 officials, fine talked down, money was not allowed directly in the hand but I was allowed to put it on the petrol tank, after which an official picked it up carefully but quickly and put his pocket. Detail: the more I talked down the fine, the more of the officials disappeared.

No, you are not allowed to drive your motorbike on a blue toll road. My advice use Waze and check the setting "avoid highways" when in doubt, follow the green signposts and not the blue ones (reverse as in Belgium). Good luck with the trip in advance!
