Can I also use an international Thai driving license in the Netherlands?
Posted in Reader question
Tags: International driver's license, Thai driver's license
Dear readers,
I got my Thai driver's license 2 years ago, also for the motorcycle. Now I'm going to Vietnam with my girlfriend and so I got an international driver's license (on that Thai driver's license) just to be on the safe side. With that international driver's license I can also drive a motorcycle.
Not that I'm going to do it, but can I also use this international driving license in the Netherlands to drive a motorcycle? It seems to me that this is possible if you are deregistered in the Netherlands?
Regards,
Jeroen
You can 180 days after entering the Netherlands with Int. driving license. Then it's over. Exchange is also not possible
I think you can use that for three months or something like normal tourists
Yes, this is absolutely allowed. There is only a limitation of 185 days. For longer stays, the driver's license must be converted or the driver must drive again.
You can only drive there with an international driving license from Thailand if you have been deregistered in the Netherlands or Belgium.
An international driver's license is a translation of the real driver's license. In the Netherlands you can drive with your Thai driving license. I believe for a period of 6 months. The Thai driver's license says ea in English and the category is also clearly specified. I use my Thai driving license when I rent a car in the Netherlands. No problem
That is indeed possible and allowed, but only for a limited time, I thought 6 months.
In combination with your Thai driver's license and you may also have to prove that you live in Thailand (passport + visa),
The Thai driving license will be accepted for 6 months.
The Thai motorcycle license will most likely not be accepted,
because this falls into a different category.
With a Thai driving license you can drive in all ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia… so none
Int. Driving license required. With a Thai Int. You can drive anywhere with a driver's license.

Foreign driver's license
Following the recognition of two new foreign driving licences, we would like to take the opportunity to remind you of driving with a foreign driving licence.
In order to drive a motor vehicle in Belgium, except in cases where an exemption is provided, one must hold a Belgian or European driving licence. However, if the driver does not live in Belgium, he can steer with a recognized foreign driver's license. If you decide to settle in Belgium, you must have this foreign (non-EU) driving license converted into a European driving license (“Belgian” driving licenses have not been issued since 1989). For example, driving with a foreign driver's license while being registered in Belgium in the foreigners' register and holding a foreigner's identity card is a common offense.
“Residence” means the conditions of residence stated in Article 3 § 1 of the Royal Decree of 23 March 1998. (conditions relating to registration and holder are of one of the documents mentioned therein).
