Reader question: How many months should a Thai passport be valid upon arrival in Thailand?
Dear readers,
How many months should a Thai passport be valid upon arrival in Thailand? My wife and daughter have both Belgian and Thai nationality. Their Thai passport will expire on September 2 next year.
Is it still possible to travel to Belgium at the end of March next year and return to Thailand at the beginning of May?
MVG
Serge
It seems to me that if you have a Thai passport, that passport may have expired years ago to enter Thailand.
After all, Thailand will not refuse people with Thai nationality at the border.
After that, you must of course have time to get a new Thai passport if you want to travel out of Thailand again.
Leaving on the Belgian passport will probably be difficult, because it is not registered upon entry.
To my knowledge there is no minimum validity period for entering Thailand with a Thai passport.
I wouldn't even know what the point of that would be.
Your wife and daughter are going to Belgium from March to May next year.
Their Thai passports will not expire until September next year.
I don't really see a problem with it then.
My wife traveled to Thailand in January and did not have a valid passport.
Had to get a temporary passport from the embassy to travel because
The Netherlands refuses to let people leave without a valid passport.
A valid ID card is sufficient to enter Thailand.
If you want to be sure, contact the Thai embassy anyway.
Are you sure you get a good answer and do you still have enough time to possibly. to apply for new passports
Do some actually read the question.
They leave Thailand for Belgium in March and return to Thailand in May.
Their passports don't expire until September. So they have a valid passport
What does all this have to do with a Thai embassy? A Thai embassy is located outside Thailand.
I think if you also have a Belgian passport that you can travel to Thailand and back with that passport. Must be valid for 6 months (Europe).
I think you are confusing 2 things.
If you want to enter a country with a foreign passport, most countries require that the passport is usually valid for at least 6 months. I don't know exactly if that is 6 months after entering or 6 months after leaving that country.
Follow-up:
So if your wife and daughter want to enter Thailand with their Belgian passport, their passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
If they want to enter Belgium with their Thai passport, their Thai passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
So with the Thai passport in and out of Thailand, with the Belgian passport in and out of Belgium.
Saves a lot of time and hassle.
The question states that they have both nationalities, so it seems normal to me that they also have a passport and/or ID card from both countries. If not yet, apply. There is plenty of time for departure next March..
It is then clear that they live in Thailand during the year, and now want to visit Belgium (or whatever) for a few weeks (March-May). Afterwards they simply come back to Thailand.
so
Depart from Thailand with Thai passport.
Arrival in Belgium with a Belgian passport
Leave Belgium with a Belgian passport.
Arrive in Thailand with a Thai passport.
The only question he asks is “Should that Thai passport be valid for another 6 months upon return to Thailand (just as is required of a foreign passport)?
No, I don't think so because it is a Thai passport. I don't see the point in that either, because they have Thai nationality and are returning to their own country.
If in doubt, go to the police/immigration and ask the question there. At most, Thailand can require that your passport have a minimum period of validity upon departure, but I don't think so. I don't know if such legislation exists. Do not think so.
Thai embassy is not at issue here, because there is no Thai embassy in Thailand.
You can only find a Thai embassy outside Thailand
It would also be great to call from Thailand to a Thai embassy abroad to ask that question, especially if you can get those answers in Thailand itself.
Nowhere do I read in the question that they want to go to Belgium with a Thai passport. Since they have Belgian nationality, this is not necessary. They are entitled to a Belgian passport/ID card. Apply at the Belgian embassy if not yet in possession.
Even less often, I read that they want to return to Thailand afterwards with their Belgian passport. That would be absolutely crazy considering they have a Thai passport.
Just clarify. Read – The only question he actually asks, although not with these words “Does that Thai passport have to be valid for another 6 months upon re-entry into Thailand (just as a foreign passport is required)?
Hi,
To answer your question.
Their THAI passport may be expired to enter Thailand. A passport, whether still valid or expired, is always proof of nationality.
During its validity, it is also an identity document (outside the country of issue)
To leave Thailand, the PP must therefore not have expired.
And whether they will be able to depart from Belgium with an expired depends on the goodwill to / from the check-in / airline.
grtz,
