Dear readers,

In 2,5 weeks I will leave for Thailand, now I read yesterday that Loi Krathong will be celebrated on November 6 this year. I know it is celebrated exuberantly in Chiang Mai, but unfortunately I will be leaving from there on November 3rd. Where are festivities planned? I would of course like to experience this during my trip!

I don't know exactly where I'll be staying on November 6 yet. The only thing that is certain so far is that between Oct. and November 29 or 3 in Chiang Mai am. I have already visited Bangkok before that. The intention is to descend from Chiang Mai to the south from November 4 or 3. Kanchanaburi is perhaps the most likely place to stay on November 4.

Sincerely,

Marielle

Mentioning here all Thai cities and possibilities where you can have that party is impossible. All the more so because you don't know 100 percent where you are on 06.11. I'm sure you can experience the party in Kanchanaburi - completely different and smaller than in Chiang Mai.

Have experienced it a number of times in Pattaya. It's a big event there!

    Dear Marielle,

    You could go by Sukhothai.
It seems to be very well celebrated there.
Google but is effective. And there are also some videos on youtube.

    Greetings

Sukhothai is really the best place to see it. Been there twice and can only recommend it, the festival is celebrated all over Thailand but nowhere as extensively as in the old part of Sukhothai (2 km from the center) where Thai performances are always held between the ruins. Many eateries and of course countless places where you can buy a beautiful sacrificial boat.

Find this a very interesting question. Also looking forward to any responses. We are on the same dates that we leave in Chiang Mai and we are not sure yet where we are in between.
Depart on November 3 to Chiang Rai and then from there to Bangkok by train.

I booked on a whim last week. I leave for Bangkok on November 1 and after reading this topic I realize that I can be in Thailand during Loi Krathong.
I actually wanted to travel to Cambodia after a few days, but I don't really have any plans yet.

So I'll keep an eye on this discussion.
So maybe it will be Bangkok -> Sukhothai and then to Cambodia. Or not. Everything is still possible. 😉
@fred, @kwaipuak. Thanks for the tip.

(Just googled: Bangkok -> Sukhothai is quite a distance.)

@Gringo. Pattaya may also be nice (and closer to Bangkok), but at Loi Krathong I have the idea of a subdued party. That seems to me to be less the case in Pattaya.

This is a Thailand blog, but maybe someone knows if Loi Krathong is also celebrated in Cambodia?
I will of course also search the internet myself. But yeah, now that I'm commenting...

The most beautiful Loy Kratong is undoubtedly in Sukothai. But it is currently hopeless to find a decent hotel there, as the better hotels were already full in April.

I myself go to Sanglkaburi every year, would there be a beautiful celebration by the Mon.

Try this guesthouse in Sukhotai. Fantastic. Owners are an Italian and his Thai wife.

Thank you all for the responses!

Also good to read that it is apparently difficult to find a hostel / guesthouse in Sukhothai, because I have not booked anything yet and wanted to do this on the spot. I will consider whether it is wise to book this in advance.

Pattaya is not on my list for this trip, I am even further north.

Nice to read that many people are interested in attending or even celebrating a Loy Kratong celebration. I have experienced the event myself several times and have traveled to Thailand 2x especially for it… However, there is also some confusion about what exactly it entails.
The Loy Kratong is simply letting home-made 'kratongs' float on a river. I have noticed that many people also think that releasing lanterns (khomloi/khomfai) is also part of Loy Kratong. That is not true. So my question is, what exactly do you want to experience?
This so-called festival of lights is called 'Yi Peng' and is only held in a grand manner at a location just outside Chiang Mai. It is an event that is usually held on the same weekend as Loy Kratong, but can also be a week earlier or later (position of the moon)
I have experienced this event several times myself and it is many times more impressive than Loy Kratong, and certainly special because it is only held at 1 location and only the Thai themselves know about it. There is also a touristic version, but you have to pay money for that, so try not to end up there…
Just look on youtube: 'Yi peng' Chiang Mai

I wonder if this is ultimately what everyone was aiming for with Loy Kratong. For Loy Kratong itself, according to many, it is best to go to Sukhothai. Which is also on my to-do list! 😉

    Regards,

    Michel
