Home » Reader question » Reader question: From Thailand to the Netherlands, whether or not a Covid test?
Dear readers,
We have to return to the Netherlands on January 28. Do I have to have a negative covid test or not? The embassy isn't sure. The central government says NO, Thailand is a safe country. I would like to know for sure though.
If so, where can I undergo such a test? We live in Muang Loei.
Regards,
Hans
If the national government says 'NO', then who are we to contradict that.
How more sure do you want to know 🙂
Goodbye,
Indeed! But to be on the safe side, also check with the airline, because if they do not let you board in Bangkok without proof of a negative Covid test, it is of little use to you that it is not mandatory for entry to the Netherlands.
This is what KLM writes on their website,
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, passengers traveling to and from the Netherlands are required to submit a health declaration during check-in,
If you do not know which airline you are flying with, please check with the relevant airline
A health statement in the form of a self-filling form, no Covid test.
health statement is different from a covid test with the requirement that it must be a PCR test. Fit to fly is also a statement of a health test.
Think the correct answer should be sought elsewhere I don't know but am able to recognize poor formulation.
I think it also depends on what nationality you are. will it be difficult not to admit Dutch nationality??
Legislation passed yesterday by the 2nd and 1st chamber requiring incoming travelers to submit a negative PCR test
Only from high-risk countries and not from low-risk countries, including Thailand.
Not required by the national government from Thailand, but the airline can request this. So ask your airline for information.
Hans,
If it is the 28th, Thailand will be choking on Corona cases and you will need a test.
The number of cases is on the rise.
Do you ever compare the Thai numbers with those in the European countries? Do you see that the number of infections in Thailand over the whole of 2020 is lower than the number per day in the Netherlands, for example? Then a lot still needs to be done before Thailand 'suffocates from the corona cases'.
Thailand is indeed on the list of safe countries for which no PCR test with a negative result is currently mandatory. See: https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/coronavirus-covid-19/reizen-en-vakantie/inreizen-doorreizen-nederland-en-het-eu-inreisverbod/veilige-landen
But it also says: These safe countries can change. So keep an eye on this page for the latest information.
With the increase in corona cases in Thailand, Thailand's safe status could change quickly.
So far it is indeed not necessary, but you have to keep an eye on it. They can adjust the policy in the coming weeks. See below the list of free countries.
https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/coronavirus-covid-19/reizen-en-vakantie/negatieve-covid-19-testuitslag-aankomst-nederland/negatieve-testuitslag-buiten-eu-en-schengen
I myself fly back with Emirates on 20 January. I go to a private hospital max. 72 hours in advance and have a test taken. 5-10 min drive and a few baths. Certain for the uncertain due to transfer in Dubai. Also nice for yourself that you can report on your return that you have just been tested. Good luck!
In the Hua Hin Hospital they ask for a Covid test 2000 Bath. There are few Thai who are willing to pay.
A law is currently being prepared that will fall under the emergency law, whereby a negative test will be mandatory for entry by plane, boat and train. This law will be moving to the 1st chamber soon, so stay tuned. It seems that there will be no exception for Thailand either.
https://nos.nl/artikel/2363318-kabinet-maakt-haast-spoedwet-verplichte-pcr-test-naar-kamer.html
That law has now been passed, but the restriction to travelers from 'high-risk areas' has been maintained.
