Dear readers,

I have had travel assistance insurance with Europ Assistance for years. The contract states that the insured is covered up to an amount of EUR 1.250000 abroad in the event of illness, but it does not explicitly state for COVID-19.

Will this be accepted by the Thai authorities do you think?

And is a Dutch version sufficient or should it be in English?

Thanks in advance.

As long as the statement is not in English and does not explicitly mention the Covid coverage, it will not be accepted. You will therefore have to ask the insurer for an English statement.
But: when I look at my travel insurance, I see that those medical expenses are only covered in addition to the coverage of a health insurance policy, so not unconditionally. For the 70-80 euros per year that I pay, of course, that can't be any other way. So with only that travel insurance I would not meet the Thai conditions.
But of course you can have very different conditions in your policy,

You must have a certificate in which the insurance explicitly states that you are insured for Covid-19 and this statement must be in English. The amount for which you are insured must also be stated.

Just arrived in Bangkok. Well organized at the airport. I had a statement from OHRA in English that Covid is covered, but instead of the amount it stated “A general maximum reimbursement does not apply.” Was accepted.

I had the same thing happen upon arrival in BKK. The controller wanted to send me back first. Only because the amount of 100.000 was not stated. By explaining to a higher-ranking person who understood English better what this sentence means, I was able to convince him.

Can't you just make that statement yourself....
Control seems very difficult to me.

    Why do I say that…
Note that the health insurance companies want to issue a statement that you are insured, but do not want to state any amounts.
This is of course easy to adjust yourself.
Not legally, but you are insured after all

    • Cornelis says up

That seems like a very bad idea to provide a false insurance statement.
The fact that the Dutch health insurers do not mention amounts does not appear to be a problem at all. The Thai Embassy accepts this when applying for the Certificate of Entry, and many have already entered Thailand with that statement. Basically unlimited, Covid included – what more could you ask for?

    Dear Cornelius,
Some time ago you reported that the statement of the Silver Cross (in English) without mentioning $100.000 was accepted by the embassy in The Hague. Now I read on Facebook (ASQ club) that upon arrival at the gate, at Immigration and at ASQ hotel, that $100.000 is explicitly looked at. Have you encountered problems?

    • Cornelis says up

No, I haven't left yet, but know that statement will simply be accepted. See, for example, above also the confirmation of this by Rob. They look at the amount, but 'the statement that no maximum is applied' is accepted.

      • John Meijer says up

This is correct. But their english knowledge is not that good.

An aspect that was mentioned earlier: if you are tested positive during your 2 weeks of quarantine in Thailand, without complaints or with only mild complaints, you will still be admitted to hospital. However, most insurers will not cover this stay because there is no medical need for hospitalization.

As mentioned by others, it must be explicitly stated that there is cover for COVID-19. Even if it is included but is not indicated in the (English) statement, it will most likely not be accepted.

    My own experience:
The English statement of my Dutch health insurance (VGZ) was therefore not accepted for the application for a (single entry tourist) visa 2 weeks ago. Suppose it had been accepted, I think that it would still not be accepted for the application of the CoE.
In addition to the health insurance required in the Netherlands, I also have a continuous travel insurance. However, this is not relevant because the company does not provide coverage for a country with code orange.

In order to quickly obtain another insurance for the visa application, I contacted AA Insurances in Hua Hin. It could be arranged immediately and quickly and half an hour after the call I already received the Thai insurance policy (Thai and English and MVV USD 100.000 COVID-19 cover).
This insurance has been accepted by the embassy in The Hague for the visa and has subsequently also been accepted for the CoE.

Because I will be staying in Thailand for a relatively short time, I have only taken out insurance for 90 days. I leave out further details here because insurance can differ per situation and age.
If you would like to contact AA Insurances, please visit their website (https://www.aainsure.net/nl-index.html). You can easily communicate with them in the Dutch language.

Zilveren Kruis issues a statement in which it is explicitly stated that Covid is included, and it is therefore accepted.

I am with IZZ (which is actually VGZ),
I think I will switch to another insurance company at the end of this year (apparently Silver Cross)

  7. Michael Spaapen says up

I have annual travel insurance with American Express. However, it has been made very clear to me that as long as Thailand has code Orange, the insurance will NOT cover anything if I go there anyway.
So no medical costs, no theft, no repatriation, nothing!

For people under 55 there is now the green version of the Elite card with omnium.

  8. Peter in quarantine says up

The Thai Embassy is very strict so COVID-19 listed and in English

    • PEER says up

      Yes peter,
Yes, you get that English translation from your insurance company, but there is no max/min amount in US $. They don't/don't want to.
I myself also called my V Lanschot-Chabot claim insurance, and they also do not pass on any amounts.

    • willem says up

Strictly sure. But sometimes something else?

They did not accept insurance with me because covid-19 was not explicitly stated. Beats. It said coronavirus medical treatment.

    Jean,

you can easily print an English version in your customer zone. In that document they do not specify COVID 19 because they do not always cover it.

here is the coverage guarantee of Europ Assistance from their website :

If for certain destinations the government only allows travel that is essential, and you have traveled to your destination for that reason and need to request your travel assistance, we will assist you further, provided you provide us with proof of the essential nature of your present travel.

Because I live here, I contacted VGZ.
She then asked the department, is not eligible.
Then talked to her further and said, this is strange, I'm insured and if I am forced to go to the Netherlands, I can't go back for the time being.
She then wrote everything down and will discuss it with the department and forward it to me by email within 10 days.
Got this message by attach in PDF but don't know how to put it here.
so made blue copy and pasted.
    This is the example

    or repatriation.
All the above mentioned is assured under the conditions of the policy.
    Yours Sincerely,
    Health insurer VGZ

I also received a message that VGZ has consulted with the Thai Embassy, and that it is accepted by the Thai Embassy,
Hope you don't use it unless it's absolutely necessary.
An acquaintance from here Changmai who is insured with OHRA received almost the same thing.
Arrived here in Bangkok on November 13 and went into quarantine for 11 days.
Told me too had a lot of work

  11. kawin.coene says up

As far as I know, Europ assistence covers covid (I have applied for it with them) I have been insured there for 15 years. Or the proof will have to be in English, I think, but you better ask a Thai Embassy or Consulate. Ethias covers covid.
    Lionel.

  12. eduard says up

No, do not wish to specifically mention covid.. I have called almost all companies, not found one that includes it.

  13. Mike H says up

I am currently in ASQ in Bangkok. So apparently my collection of documents was good enough to enter the country. As proof of Insurance I had an English letter from FBTO containing 2 necessary notices:
    1-Including Covid-19 and
2- ..for an amount of 100% of the Dutch maximum.

This was accepted without any problem by the Embassy, at Schiphol Airport, in Bangkok and in the ASQ hotel
