Reader question: Printer useful in Thailand?
Dear readers,
Since I also have emigration plans, and see that quite a bit of paperwork is requested by the authorities in Thailand, I asked myself how you do that? Bought a printer and print yourself or go to the shop every time with a USB stick and have it printed?
Price will make little difference whether you buy a simple printer in the Netherlands or Thailand, I think.

If you are moving to Thailand then I assume that you still have 30-40 euros left to buy a printer.
Don't complicate your life unnecessarily. Enjoy life and eat out 1 less time and you have your own printer
Ink cartridges dry out quickly….
We go to a shop nearby.
Ink printers are dated and expensive.
Buy laser printer.
Even color lasers that can also scan and copy don't cost much more.
With WiFi and network so you don't have to worry about USB cables all the time.
There are now refillable “ink-tank” printers (+scanner/copier). Here they call it “sistem infusion”. Previously, computer shops themselves modified inkjets with cartridges to this much cheaper system in terms of ink consumption. Now such printers are simply for sale. Perhaps 2x as expensive as a cartridge inkjet, say 100 Euro or so. But much cheaper to run. Great for home and small office use. Nice to have within reach for all desk crazy. And you can easily make that price difference out of it.

Our office admin sometimes had a laser printer, but there was always trouble with the toner cartridges. Too little local use for the stores to keep in stock. Also often errors due to poor contacts in a non-24/7 air-conditioning environment. (Here also directly on the beach with sea breeze.)

Most shops do not print from a USB stick for fear of viruses. So ask email and then email them.
Bought a printer.
With a USB stick to a shop, I am not such a proponent, because antivirus programs are not in use everywhere.
Moreover, I find it easier – and faster – to print myself than to have it done elsewhere.
That prevents me from having to go to the shop three times for a forgotten page.

I have two printers, I often print something for neighbours, because here you don't have such a shop in the area.
I immediately bought myself a scanner / printer here. Needed a lot in 3 years time. Get one to Rudolf. You won't regret it.

I bought an HP printer/scanner/copier in a Thai computer shop and the price was reasonable. And… of course, just like in the Netherlands, the ink cartridges are sometimes even more expensive. Without this device you have to go to a copy shop quite a lot because copies of every kind of document or ID are requested at almost every government visit and also to arrange things in NL or Belgium you often need a copy if a scan.
My experience is that inkjet printers here are on average 10 to 20% more expensive than in NLD. The advantage here is that these are often ink tank printers, which makes printing much cheaper, and paper is also cheaper here. I have a Canon Pixma myself, but when purchasing I do ask for a WiFi version because that is not self-evident here. 2 years ago I bought a Canon Pixma G3010 for 5200 Thb from the local computer dealer.
Given the warm weather, it is best not to buy an ink-jet printer: the cassettes dry out very quickly. I have switched to a Brother laser printer, the HL-1110. A simple black and white printer that does its thing perfectly, even after a long standstill. Costs 1,990 THB at Lazada.

Advice: buy the printer/scanner in Thailand. This because of cartridges, which often differ from Europe and European cartridges are difficult to get here (tactics of the printer manufacturers).

Indeed Gerard, same HP printer in Thailand as in Belgium, BUT different cartridges, the cartridges differ in number and they are not accepted in both printers, I speak from experience.!
I have a Canon printer/copier (no WiFi) with ink reservoirs to the right of the printer (assembled by the store) I lost 2500 Bath in total.
When I'm not in Thailand, someone makes sure that 2 or 3 copies are made every so often so that the nozzles don't get clogged. I've had this thing for 3 years now.
I have two printers, a Canon and an HP. Both printers are equipped with ink magazines that I can refill with bottles of ink myself. Really many times cheaper than those ink cartridges in the Netherlands.
I also make sure to use the printers at least once a month, if necessary with a test print, then the nozzles do not dry out.
Bought Canon MP3 287 years ago for a good 3.000 Baht with refillable ink cartridges. Scan, print, copy. Color or black and white. Necessary regularly and especially if you have to go to immigration every time for a 90-day notification, notification of leave return, year extension. You always need X number of documents that can be easily printed at home in this way and an extra copy as a spare. Your bank at home also wants a copy of something. Quickly fixed at home with a printer. Have the device overhauled once and for 1 Baht the problem was solved. Buy I would say.
Buy a Brother laser printer — Big C , 1459 Thb. Laser printers have the advantage that ink cannot dry out and print heads cannot clog (partly because of this).
Color printer in that type is a bit more expensive.

Dear Rudolf,,,, people will kill you with printers, there are so many of them,, but the brands make their profit from the ink and that can really add up!!!!
Buying a printer is not an expense, but also remember that many paper (documents) will have to pass through the embassy and will most likely also be legalized (20 €) per page and in my case that amounts to hundreds of euros,,, a lot also needs to be translated, which also costs money.
I address my questions directly to the embassy and they will help you up to and including.
This way you avoid printing or sending unnecessary papers.
Just ask what documents they require from you ???? and you won't go wrong.

Ohh, all my papers had to have a copy with them.
A printer is and remains a useful object in the home - a scanner/copier option on it offers even more advantages.
The embassy itself has no copy facilities and refers you to a copy shop - it is easier to always have the necessary = 1 with you.
Keeping a copy of submitted documents doesn't seem like a bad thing to me either.
I can't immediately find the link with legalization and translation.
My advice, buy a printer and you will never regret it.

Don't buy a printer.
Smartphone and all documents take a photo and share it via line or messenger or email with the print shop. 2baht to 5 per a4.
“Old” guard still uses a printer
For many documents, an original is requested at the embassy and then your smartphone or anything else will not be accepted, just keep that in mind!!
It is best to simply ask the embassy which documents Rudolf bvb. needs in his case,,, the embassy will then refer you to a link where you can see all the necessary documents and possibly print them,,, Please note that those printed documents are only valid and legal after legalization by the embassy in question!! !.

Nice if you live next to a print shop. I live 30 km from it. And immigration is only 20 km from home. What a run up and down if you don't have a printer. But yes, young legs maybe, that young guard.5555
I really make a copy on my printer faster than you make a photo, share it with the print shop via Line, for example, and then have to go there to pick up your copy. Fortunately, most of the “young guard” works efficiently, otherwise the future does not look good.
Many printer shops do not have antivirus software, and at 2 shops I came back with a virus on my USB stick.
A good shop with antivirus, near me, asks 10 baht per print and 20 for color.

I bought a canon G3000 with built-in refillable ink tanks from the printer shop in the parking garage of the big-c extra in Chiangmai. When I bought it they said I could do some shopping while they prepared the printer. The printer worked well but I found the colors a bit faded and took some ink from the tanks compared to original ink I bought extra. Turns out they secretly took out the original ink that came in the box and filled the tanks with worthless ink.
I went back but they denied everything and the canon service in Chiang mai didn't cooperate either. I accepted it, but after a few hundred prints the printer head was broken..
Honestly, in the 3 years I stayed in Thailand I did NOT miss the printer.
When extending a visa or driving license you usually have a copy shop near where you have to submit the application. Only with a rental contract or visa support letter do you have to go to a copy shop.
Costs between 4-10 baht per page in Trat province. I don't need more than 100 pages per year.
In addition, the hot and humid Thai climate is not suitable for the proper storage of both toner and [15-21C, 50% humidity].
If you do need a printer, take a black and white laser printer such as Brother HL-1110 or HL-1210W, which has become more expensive in Covid times, but always cheaper than in NL. You can make copies with an app such as Genius Scan, digitally archive and then print.
