Reader question: Wintering on Koh Chang?
Dear readers,
I have read information about Koh Chang on Thailand blog and was thinking about going to "hibernate" on this beautiful island from January / April next spring.
Are your experiences there good?
Is it possible to rent a reasonable apartment/condo for that period? Or is it just hotels?
How is the price level because it seems to me that prices are higher than elsewhere? Are there fellow citizens who live permanently on the island?
Thanks for the help!
Jacques
Dear Jacques, I recently visited Koh Chang. A beautiful island, but to spend the winter there….? Well, I wouldn't advise anyone unless you like a lot of peace and quiet. There is not much to do and because the island is not very big you will soon get tired of it. Furthermore, it is relatively expensive, but that applies to most islands.
I think it's better to spend the winter on the mainland. Hua Hin for example, you also have beach and sea.
Dear khun Peter
Yes Huahin is great for the hibernator, we have been doing this for many years.
But if you like lazing on the beach, you should bear in mind that there are few or no sunbeds and umbrellas at all. Everything has been cleared there by the military.
We are also going in January and are very curious what we will find there, but let's see how it is in the neighboring countries?
Very unfortunate because Huahin is a place to be!!!!
I went there in December 2010, if you want you can check out my weblog. I stayed there in Chai Chet which I can highly recommend. http://ceesdesnor-reisverhalenuitazie.blogspot.nl/
Hi Jacques,
Wintering in Thailand? I definitely would if you have the chance. A few years ago I was in northern Thailand during the winter ( new life thai foundation ) Chang rai and in Chiang mai for a retreat in a temple and a scooter tour through Pai. Also definitely recommended.
I was only on ko Chang after the winter and only 5 days, I loved it there. But I don't know for a whole winter, traveling within Thailand is not expensive and comfortable. So if you don't like it there, you can easily travel further.
If you look up Enjoy Diving on the Facebook page, you will find a boy who gives diving lessons on Ko Chang and more or less lives there. So if you are really interested you can send him a message and maybe he can give you the info you are looking for.
I wish you a nice journey and winter,
Carlie
Dear,
It is indeed quite a lot more expensive, logically, quite a few products have to be transported to the island.
To spend the winter there? As far as I can see they have a previous comment from me regarding Koh Chang, there isn't much to see, it's not the "secret gem" that people talk about so much, not to keep you busy for a long time anyway. Then I am silent about the unbridled building fury…
My experience (and that of a friend) was that it is steaming hot from February at least in 2010, but perhaps they will censor this mail again…however, only intend to make your expectations realistic so that you can diversify your holiday .
Spending the winter on an island is not exactly beneficial. Koh Chang is also quite expensive.
I used to come regularly. Now that mafia practices, with Phuket as an example, are also slowly making their entrance in Koh Chang plus the strongly increased prices, I stay away from that.
Let me start by thanking you for the advice. each is valuable.
I have now also understood that it can indeed be very hot from February and that from March the water comes pouring down from the sky.
maybe now is not the right time.
Of course it is an island, but if you want to do something on the mainland, you will also have to travel further and further. and the connection to Trat seems to be good and fast.
I think I'd better go in January for a week or two than next year - if I've liked the island - a longer period but then go earlier.
HuaHin is so massive again, isn't it? little style Mallorca? I have been to Koh Samui before, but that has also become so busy and especially expensive.
greetings,
Jacques
Dear Jacques,
Right conclusions drawn man, wish you a pleasant and exciting journey through Thailand.
Roger
Do not !!
Koh Chang has long since been demolished, there is almost nothing left of it, all natural beauty is gone money is now the key word.
With the exception of a single rubber plantation, almost everything has been felled, and that in 4 to 5 years. money money money
And a round of the island is also done quickly, I think it's very bad for the good islanders, but it was really nice for a week, super shame, because it really was a paradise for 7 years ago.
By the way, many Thai islands are nice for a week, or you have to find an unspoilt village somewhere on a relatively large island such as Koh Samuii, but I wouldn't know that just like that.
And if you really want to go there, Kai Bee Hut is the best option, but book well in advance, just google it
Greetings and happy Thailand,
John
