Reader question: With a domestic flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Dear readers,
I have booked a ticket (KLM) to Suvarnabhumi. Now I want to go to Chiang Mai the same day with a domestic flight.
1. Can I have my luggage labeled through to Chiang Mai at Schiphol?
2. I think I have to go through immigration first and then to the gate for the domestic flight. How much time should I take between the arrival of the flight from the Netherlands and the departure time to Chiang Mai. Is 2,5 hours enough?
Regards,
Henk
First, it depends on which airline you fly.
Normally 2,5 hours is enough, at least if you fly further from Suvarnuburi. There are quite a few local providers that fly from Don Muang.
We only had 1 hour to transfer in November, but thanks to the airport service (wheelchair) this was easily feasible. Although I also had my doubts. Pick up luggage, go through immigration, check in again and go to the gate. The boys practically flew with the wheelchairs. and then of course priority everywhere.
Everything also depends on immigration
Please note that the company departs from Suvarnabhumi
That may be what you say.
When booking with KLM, you also show your ticket Bangkok-Changmai.
They then stick 2 stickers on the back of your passport, 1 Amsterdam-Bangkok and 1 Bangkok-Changmai, of your hold luggage.
Looks good if they did, because they didn't do it 1x with me.
Don't know if they do that with all companies, the hold luggage, with Thai airways they do.
You have to go through emigration and customs.
When booking, at Thai airways, ask to be sure whether your luggage is already with you.
Normally 2 1/2 hours is sufficient.
Success.
Hans
Many airlines only label the luggage to the final destination if both journeys (with different airlines) are covered by one and the same ticket. Moreover, an agreement must have been concluded between the two in this area. Of course you can always ask. Obviously this does not apply if you fly on from Don Mueang ……
If your luggage is indeed labeled through to Chiang Mai, it will go through Immigration at Suvarnabhumi, but not through customs. The customs check then takes place in Chiang Mai.
Dear Henk, if you fly from Suvarnabhumi to Chang Mai it might just be possible if it is not busy at the pass control, but by far most domestic flights depart from DMK, just to be sure I would take a little more time, because by labeling I don't think it is. You can if you fly with Thai airways.
further more information is required. greeting. H.
If your luggage has been tagged and you have checked in, you do not have to go through customs. After arrival, follow the signs for the domestic flight.
If there really is a reason to continue flying the same day, you should do it. If you just want to start your holiday relaxed, take a cheap airport hotel in Bangkok after arrival and fly on the next morning. No stress and you arrive in Chang Mai fairly relaxed.
You can go to CNX from BKK with Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, ThaiSmile and VietJet.
As indicated above, pay attention to whether there is code sharing; if you fly KLM, EVA Air or Thai you should be able to, and certainly if you buy the combined tickets AMS-BKK-CNX, which are a bit more expensive. KLM and EVA have code-sharing with Bangkok Airways.
It depends a bit on the lady or gentleman at Schiphol at check-in if you have separate tickets..
2,5 hours is more than enough, but the flight can sometimes be delayed up to half an hour. You have to walk about 800m from the arrival gate to the immigration post at the domestic transfer desks (follow signs Chiangmai etc. above the movable walkways). It is also usually quite quiet there, in contrast to the main counters where you can stand in line for up to 1,5 hours when many intercontinental flights have arrived.
If your luggage is not checked through, you will need to allow an additional 1 hour for immigration and luggage collection and again to 4th floor for local flight check-in, but you can find flights to CNX until late at night. Of course you no longer have to go through immigration and customs in CNX (which you generally hardly ever stop.)
Always buy a full ticket, including all flights, then you stay in transit everywhere and you no longer have to deal with immigration or customs. When you check in for the first time, say your final destination and you will then receive all boarding passes and baggage tickets and it will probably be cheaper.
Because it sometimes saves quite a lot if you book your domestic flight separately, we have done that regularly. The disadvantage is unlabeled luggage. Advantage sometimes 150+ Euro discount for 2 persons. To Chiang Mai from BKK almost 50 flights per day so plenty of choice.
Single tickets are considerably cheaper, in my humble opinion,
9 out of 10 domestic flights go through the other airport in Bangkok, Don Muang. So I'm afraid you have to go to the other airport first… so with luggage…
Nonsense, Lot. There are 4 airlines flying from Suvarnabhumi to Chiang Mai.
That's nonsense. I flew from BKK to Krabi and back from Hat Yai. All through BKK
Dear Henk,
If you fly with Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways you can stay on Suvarnabhumi otherwise go to Don Muang.
And with Bangkok Air you can't label through so you have to go through customs and then to the 4th floor for your next flight….
At Thai air we have ever succeeded in continuing to label, but is that still possible? Otherwise, call KLM….
You arrive early (09.35 am) so plenty of time, enjoy it.
Happy Holidays
You can also stay on BKK with VietJetAir. Go through customs and immigration. Then check in again.
I would stay in control myself and check out can just take you 3 hours.
Suvarbarumi is really big…
Have a nice trip
Your luggage is almost never forwarded if you have booked individual tickets. I find 2.5 hours too stressful for the switch. However, there are so many flights from BKK to CNX that you can easily schedule a little more time. Just book a slightly later flight. Take it easy! Delay/baggage collection/customs/immigration/re-check-in/security check/boarding on time. If everything goes well, it can easily be done in 2,5 hours. If everything goes wrong, no! Make it 3,5 hours and go to the basement at Superrich to exchange some money and take your first tasty Mango, then the time that may remain will be used quickly.
Hello Hank,
It is a pity that you did not book directly with KLM Amsterdam-Chiang Mai. Then everything would have been very simple. Your baggage would then be labeled for a flight with an airline (e.g. Thai Airways) that has code-sharing with KLM
Hi Hank,
I arrived the day before yesterday at Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) with a direct KLM flight. Before departure I had bought a ticket online at VietJetAir.com to fly to Chiang Mai (7 tens). Transit with "domestic flights" is well indicated on BKK, but ... you have to be careful which domestic airline you take from BKK to CNX (Chiang Mai airport). With some you can reach the gate without having to go through customs first, with others you first have to go through customs, check in your luggage again and/or have your hand luggage rescanned. This is also the case if you fly with VietJetAir.com. But I can highly recommend this airline. Nothing fancy, but clean and on my flight friendly staff. I had less than 2 hours to catch my flight to CNX, but made it with ease (despite going through customs first incl. baggage check, re-checking in on a different floor a km away and going through another customs check ).
Another customs check? You mean the security check........
the last ”customs check” must be security check 😉
We have been booking individual tickets for years. If you continue to fly with Bangkok Bangkok Airways, you can simply stay in transfer and continue to domestic flights. No hassle with suitcases etc.
