Dear readers,

My girlfriend is half Thai, father Thai, mother Belgian. She was born in Belgium but wishes to apply for dual nationality with a view to buying land, etc Thailand.

Do you have any idea to what extent it is possible to apply for Thai nationality in such a situation?

Yours sincerely,

Ruben from Belgium

In principle, that should be possible. A son/daughter of a Thai father/mother is entitled to Thai nationality. But in practice it will be difficult given its history. How old is she? What does her birth certificate look like? Is her father on it? Do you have details or can you get details of the father (his birth certificate and Thai ID)? I would collect all documents (translated into Thai and legalized), possibly. from Thailand, and then inquire at the Thai embassy. You can of course also go to the Thai embassy first for an interview. I don't think there is anyone on this blog who knows Thai law well enough to give an unequivocal yes or no to the question of whether it is possible in practice.

On Thaivisa I found the following:
According to the Thai Nationality Act (2535 BE), it is possible for a person born to either father or mother of Thai nationality, within or outside Thailand, to acquire Thai nationality.
To Apply for a Thai Birth Certificate
    1. A child born to a Thai parent outside Thailand is entitled to acquire Thai nationality, the parents can apply for a birth certificate for their child at the Royal Thai Embassy in the country of birth.
    2. The following documents are required in order to obtain a Thai birth certificate:
    • 2 copies of the foreign birth certificate and its translation into Thai; both documents must be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issuing the birth certificate
    • 2 copies of the marriage certificate of the parents
    • 2 copies of the passport of the father and the passport of the mother (either two Thai passports or one Foreign and one Thai passport)
    • 2 copies of the identity cards of the father and of the mother
    • 1 photo of the child
The Embassy needs 5 working days to issue a Thai birth certificate

It seems to me to be an arrangement for newborn children, so I do not know whether it also applies to older (adult) children.
In any case, go to the Thai Embassy for further information.

Tjamuk, I always got everything I was entitled to in Thailand without relationships and without money. I'm really sorry you're bringing that up again. If we want corruption in Thailand to disappear, we should not participate in it ourselves or even suggest it.

I think that is a very difficult story because she was born in Europe.
She is therefore not registered in Thailand.
Only a statement from the Thai father in Thailand that it is his daughter can
    help.
    These are often difficult situations.

  5. my friend was born in BKK in 1951, mother is Thai, father Dutch nationality. Moved to Dutch at age 7. At the age of 24 they moved back to BKK where he was a monk for 1 year and ran a hairdressing salon. He is now considering going back for good. Is it possible for him to still study the Thai nat. to request? And does he keep his Ned. passport like most foreigners with us

What Tino Kuis said earlier in a response applies to both Van Rijckvorsel and Riekie: there is no one who can give a sensible answer to that on this blog.

Both will go to the Thai Embassy resp. Dutch. Embassy or Town Hall in the Netherlands to get a definite answer and information about this.

My daughter was born in the Netherlands (50% Thai and 50% NL).
Simply apply for a Thai passport at the Thai embassy in the Netherlands.
She has both Dutch and Thai Nationality.
Please contact the Thai embassy in Brussels.

Indeed, I had my children's Dutch birth certificate legalized and took it to the Thai amdassade, they then received a Thai birth certificate and a Thai passport and now just have 2 nationalities, not difficult at all and not much work.
