Home » Reader question » Reader question: Can you get a motorcycle license as a tourist in Thailand?
Dear readers,
Can you get a motorcycle license as a tourist in Thailand? I mean take the exam. I do not have a Dutch motorcycle license. And is there a difference between a small or large motorcycle license?
Regards,
Freek
I can be very brief about that. No that is not possible.
You must, among other things, submit your long-stay visa and a resident certificate. At the very least you need a NoN immigrant visa (3 months).
3 months visa and be prepared to pay some administration costs here and there
Eg 5000 bath and it can be arranged .
Bye Frank.
Does'nt work. You must have a residence permit to apply for a driving licence
Ger Hoppe, are you not mixing up the residence certificate and the residence permit? I think so. William's response above says it well.
hey, it's possible. Get an international driver's license at the town hall in Belgium. Go to the driving school in Thailand with this and in a few hours you will leave with a Thai driving license. (moped AND car) After a sight and brake test. Then every 5 years back to the driving school in Thailand. (The driver's license is only valid for 5 years) Again after a sight and brake test, you step out again with a driver's license for the next 5 years!
Ludo
Ludo van Herck.
This is not possible, Mr. Freek writes that he does not have a motorcycle license and what is he doing at a town hall in Belgium if he lives in the Netherlands.
So if he applies for an international driver's license, it will state what he can drive.
And then he will indeed have to submit a recidivism certificate and a long-stay visa
And secondly, a Thai driving license is first valid for 1 year and then 5 years after extension and then 5 years again.
Good luck
Small correction Sietse, a first driving license is now valid for 2 years. Changed a few years ago. When 'we' obtained our driver's license here it was 1 year. Now there is talk of a special driver's license for a 'big bike', ie more than 400cc. I don't know if it is already official. If so, I will have to have that special big bike license because my motorcycle is 600cc. I don't know how this will go...
Maybe I misunderstand, but how can he get an international driver's license if, as he says himself, he does not have a Dutch motorcycle license?
Since when do driving schools issue driving licenses?
I heard (source: Thaivisa.com). that some tourists have succeeded, possibly through an “agent” and actually illegally.
Normally, you must have long-term residency status and a permanent address,
When I went to live in Thailand, I simply got the motorcycle and car driving license on presentation of my Dutch driving license together with the international version of the ANWB.
Both have been owned in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.
No exam needed in Thailand, just eyes and reaction test.
The current Thai motorcycle driving license is valid for all motorcycles, but from mid-February 2021 it will be split into light and heavy motorcycles with a separate driving license per class.
Somchai, that you succeeded, that's because you've had that driver's license for more than 40 years. International driving licenses that state the date 1968 and not 1949 can no longer be used to exchange your home country's driving license for a Thai driving licence.
That is possible, if you can provide an international motorcycle driving license. Otherwise you will need another visa. Incidentally, the driving license obtained in Thailand is NOT valid in Europe, if you do not live in Thailand, and NOT exchangeable for a Dutch driving license.
Could be.
I also got my motorcycle license.
And annually go to Thailand for 3-4 years and do not live there.
1st time valid for 2 years.
2nd time valid for 2 years
3nd time valid for 5 years
You do need the necessary papers and also health test sick cleaning and also resident permit.
And you do various tests for distance, color and driving, of course, and also theory exam.
Driving license only valid in Thailand.
Because in the Netherlands I don't have a motorcycle license.
Just tidy everything I needed exactly on papers through a desk.
Neat exam done with theory lessons and of course driving at a driving school.
And already mentioned test from hospital.
Collected the pass at the amphur and provided with the necessary photo.
