Dear readers,

My girlfriend regularly watches those singing competitions in Thailand, as you also have in the Netherlands, such as the Voice, Idols, etc. But what strikes me in Thailand is that many Thai people participate in such competitions who cannot sing a note. Sometimes so false that it hurts the ears? Surely there must be such a thing as a pre-selection?

And the jury in Thailand is also never really critical of the competitions.

The question then arises in my mind whether participating in Thailand is more important than winning? Are Thais less critical if you don't have talent?

Regards,

Niek

I have been amazed for years how the Thai can on the one hand be ashamed of things that we do not understand that you should be ashamed of and on the other hand can sing unheard out of tune and loudly in places where many others can "enjoy" and themselves then don't be ashamed of it.

    The Thai language is phonetic.
They have to paste some words into that song in a certain way.
Because we don't understand it sounds false.
    It's serious music to them.
    Compare it to word yodeling.

That seems like a plausible explanation to me.
But still I think many Thai must have hearing damage.
Music is sometimes so loud that you can no longer hear the music.
      And nobody cares about it.

If a Thai gets a microphone in his hand, he thinks he can sing. This is because there are so many karaoke places where you can sing along, cry or roar without hesitation. For me the moment to leave, especially when drunk people think they feel like the star.

And why is that moment there?

Shame, not being able or not wanting to understand that people let themselves go and that happiness can also mean freedom?
Or just the Calvinist idea that asking for attention is not supposed to be?

Participation is more important anyway because that is daring to show your weak side.

How many Dutch people really dare to speak in public or regularly go to a karaoke bar?

I also like the card game Donkeys because even the best cloverjacks can be the weakest https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezelen

Showing weakness is a form of trust. Dogs do that too when they play and people can learn a lot from that.

My impression is that participating in such singing competitions is more important than winning. The jury takes this into account in their comments.
What strikes me is that both the judges and the audience treat the participants with respect and certainly do not ridicule them when they fail to perform.

I don't know if you've ever watched other programs (other than those talent shows) on Thai TV, but it's not very uplifting. Yet adult people throughout Thailand watch 'entertainment' every day, with the 'Mr. Kaktus' show being a highly intellectual event in comparison. I would not ask too many rational and logical questions; then you keep going here.
