Reader question: Is it wise to withdraw extra cash?
Dear readers,
Is it better to go to the ATM and have extra cash at home? My wife says it is not necessary. But what if you are no longer allowed to go out on the street due to the emergency measure? Can you still access your money?
I am 78 years old and live in SiSaKet.
Regards,
Otto
Why shouldn't you be allowed to go out on the street anymore? You must be able to buy food in the supermarket, etc.
Prayut has made it clear in his television speech that all shops that sell essential food will remain open. There is a possibility that a curfew will be imposed. But during the day you will be able to do your shopping and therefore also go to the ATM.
Goodbye.
Your wife is right Otto. It has become known that the banks will remain open. Perhaps, that the ATMs are sometimes refilled a little late..
Eight,
I don't think things will go that smoothly with the state of emergency.
Just gives some extra powers to the government, just some travel restrictions for now.
With regard to the ATM and cask money, it is of course always useful to have a few thousand bats ready.
Furthermore, supermarkets and banks remain open as usual and the ATMs are also there.
And should it come to the point that you are indeed no longer allowed to leave your house, then you don't need bats either.
But as with everything here in the Netherlands, enforcement is not their strongest point.
mai pen rai khap
In bad times it is always a good idea to have some reserve ammunition in your pocket — something I learned from my (late) wise grandmother who survived 2 WW's (I am now 64 myself).
Shops may remain open, stocks may be compromised, governments may limit cash, vending machines are not refilled in time…. so you can continue.
Some money in hand can never really be a bad solution – after the hard times, the surplus can go back to the bank…..
Not pessimistic but cautious
This afternoon in Pattaya customer you could not use the ATM on a number of pees. even at the bank building at bkk boonthavoorn. back at the tesco you could withdraw money. typically thai one doesn't know what the other is doing. paste large a5 on machine with Thai text ???
Under the motto of:
Better shy than shy
It is of course not unwise to have some extra money at home.
Hi Otto.
Always keep some money with you. But if we are no longer allowed to go onto the streets, we will not have any money to do with it.
On Koh Samui it seems that the exchange offices make price agreements among themselves. It is suspicious that everyone charges the same rate. Last night 32.35 bth. I don't know what rate is charged via the ATM. Does anyone know?
E 2 star police officer spoken with an official of the BKK Bank in Hua Hin as an interpreter: the elderly can continue to do their shopping from tomorrow, so food, bank visits, etc
I think those ATMs will stay open. Perhaps there are sometimes problems with refilling and/or repair.
I'm sure I drew some extra from the ATM as a spare just in case.
Maybe a tip: A few times in 7/11 I bought a bottle of water for 12 baht and paid (with apologies) with a 1000 baht flap. Therefore, a nice pile of 100 baht and 20 baht built up. Might come in handy with ordering food and having it delivered. Prevents the inevitable surprise “sorry, no change”. And can give some tip.
Hi Otto,
Having money on hand is always handy.
Don't they use mobile apps to make payment easier? See these convenient payment methods.
