Reader question: How do I get my Belgian bank card in Thailand?
Dear readers,
I had to renew my Belgian bank card. My brother picked it up for me. Now it has to get to Thailand. Normally my brother would bring it, but it is still not possible to get here in Thailand in a normal way.
If we use a courier service, the card must be deactivated and reactivated once it has arrived here. A whole mess. Does anybody have experience with this? Are there safe ways to get an activated card here? Registered mail?
Regards,
Rene (BE)
Have already done something similar twice: first activate in NL, then send it by regular mail (of course pack it in such a way that it is not noticeable that it contains a bank card).
Has always gone well…
If it does not arrive, I think a report of loss (can be done via the bank's website) is sufficient to make it unsuitable for use, so that a possible thief cannot do anything with it. (In any case, the pin code is not known to anyone else, so why not just send it.)
I just did , is about a replacement card img
Have a friend send it with dhl
Card between a few postcards and arrived safely after 5 working days

Well, I don't understand why your brother has already activated that card, but okay. Report the card as missing and order a new card. So don't activate it yet!. Send it by registered airmail to your Thai address. Activate it there and problem solved.
A Belgian bank card must always be activated IN Belgium.
A non-activated (in Belgium) card cannot be used abroad!
Is that different in the Netherlands?
dirk it is not true what you say a new bank card can be activated in thailand have already done it 2 x
Already done. Activate in Thailand.. Belfius bank.
I activated my card here in Thailand last week. (belfius bank)
It is true that you can activate your Belgian bank card in Thailand. This is even possible at an ATM. Please note that the ATM says 'MAESTRO' if your card is a MAESTRO card. If it is a 'MASTER' card, this is not possible if it only states 'MAESTRO'. Maestro and MASTER are two different things. MAESTRO is the most common. We are not talking about a VISA card here because that is something different.
I received my card with DHL delivered here in 2 days at home. I activated it myself via ATM. Works perfectly…where is the problem?????
Renee.
We have sent our bank card via bpost by registered mail to Thailand. Had no problem. Shipping with track and trace.
Greetings Dirk
There is also the option of temporarily blocking the card, i.e. during shipment. In fact, even with an activated card you can't do anything if you don't know the pin code. It is different with a VISA card, which is much more dangerous than an ordinary bank card. And, a whole mess? That's not it at all, it's an ordinary procedure. I always do it like this: my sister picks up the card at the bank branch and sends it here by post. Never presented a problem, as mentioned above, pack in such a way that you cannot feel that there is a card in the envelope: eg between two x two postcards.
A few years ago I sent a bank card to Belgium to my bank because it was blocked due to incorrect input. Has been reactivated by the bank (code passed on to the branch manager by telephone), card sent by registered mail in a hard greeting card (a matter of feeling the cover!), everything arrived safely in Belgium.
However, return to Thailand, although in anonymous envelope, also registered, but arrived 2 days later than stated on tracking for delivery, waited all day on the day of delivery and even saw the postman from the balcony, but nothing in the mail, but 2 days later a sudden postal message with …… delivery date of previously normal scheduled delivery, so tampering on behalf of a postal employee somewhere (?..)
At the post office they did not find my letter by date, until I pointed out the difference between the normal date (the one on the delivery notice...) and the current date.
Had to wait a while to make inquiries, and yes, there was a letter, but it had clearly been steamed open! Made them aware and opened the letter and showed them a bank card, from the looks of the ladies I could assume that they understood what had happened...
That's the problem when the cards here in Thailand could only be swiped for payment,
European cards don't have this option, but dishonest postmen apparently don't know that, now they do!

That should work with DHL.
Will cost some money!

Received a credit card from Rabobank from the Netherlands on Koh Phangan yesterday. The Rabobank sent it in an A5 envelope, with Rabobank imprint, with a clearly visible credit card in the envelope, via PostNL, with Priority sticker. Not even with registered or track and trace. Arrived in 14 days, without damage to the envelope. I feel like I was very lucky that he arrived.
