Reader question: A few days in Bangkok, what is the best place?

Dear readers,

I am going on holiday to Thailand next year and want to stay in Bangkok for a few days first. What is the best place/area to book a hotel? The most important thing for me is that it is centrally located so that all areas in Bangkok are easily accessible from there. Is nearby Hua Lamphong train station recommended?

The plan is to go to Koh Chang & Koh Kood afterwards, I'm curious how many days is suitable to stay per island? Not too short/not too long, one island more days than the other, for example? Also saw that it is about 6 to 7 hours (by bus) drive from Bangkok to Trat, is it nice to stop somewhere along the way and spend the night or continue this journey in 1x?

I'd love to hear from you, tips and recommendations are always welcome!

Greetings,

Sophie

I have spent the night in Bangkok a dozen times and have always returned to the Riverside the last few times. I love the presence of the river at breakfast. Most hotels provide a shuttle bus or boat to Saphan Taksin metro station. There you can easily take subway or boat to explore Bangkok.
Ibis Hotel Riverside is OK and not too expensive. If you wish to spend more, Chatrium is recommended.

In Bangkok it is important to me that you stay close to a BTS station (skytrain) because of the often long travel times when you go to places of interest/entertainment by car/moped. I myself usually stay near National Stadium or Asok (skytrain and metro). The latter is the most central in terms of accessibility from different places. Many people choose the area around the Khao San market, but the problem there is that you are usually stuck with a taxi or tuk-tuk if you have to cover large distances and that can take a lot of time . I don't know the islands very well myself and can't advise you about them. Good luck planning

I completely agree with René…..Sukhumvit soi 23 is where the skytrain and metro come together….so a hotel nearby there is a great advantage if you want to go somewhere quickly and easily….and with the skytrain you can quickly reach the river to see nice things from there (Saphan Taksin station)

At Sala Deang skytrain station you have another point where the metro and skytrain meet... from there you can go in all directions... that is near Pat Pong where there is a night market every evening... so it is also central to the hotel. to take.

At Hua Lampong Train Station there is a metro but no skytrain, but also a nice point for a hotel .... you are then close to Chinatown.

      Have fun in beautiful Bangkok….Joop

    Hello Sophie,

your name immediately makes me wistful, my Thai girlfriend is also called that and due to circumstances I haven't been able to look her in the eye for 14 months.

I have an advice for you. I've slept here many times before. Now with a new name. it is already an older hotel, but it also has a pleasant atmosphere in the hotel lounge, reminds me of the past in a positive way. ideal in terms of location and if you book in advance via the internet you have very reasonable prices there.
if you book at the last minute or at the reception, you suddenly pay a lot more. there is a swimming pool on the roof, not much special, but after a day in BKK believe me, a dip is great to cool off.

You are within walking distance of the Royal Palace, of Wat Po, everything on your left. On your right you will find a pleasant tourist area with all kinds of things to do. left behind you a less touristy area with some sights such as Wat Saket and several nice markets. and just a little further, but doable, take one of the many jetties for public transport across the river. and those very cheap bus-boats take you to many other places without traffic. (one tip don't get in one of those fast speedboats. the splashing water from the river (sewer) will definitely make you sick.)

rattanakosinhotel.com formerly known as the Royal Princess hotel, it couldn't be more central!

    Enjoy it!

We always stay along the river Chao Prao near the Taksin bridge, from here you can take the taxi boats and the sky train in all directions.
The hotel obviously depends on your budget, in any case there are very good hotels in this area with 4-5 stars between 80 (Chatrium) and 400 (Peninsula) euros per night. We always stay in the Anantara riverside, very nice resort, slightly more expensive than the Chatrium if you book in time. You can get a nice budget apartment in the Sunreno Appartments (about 35 euros). Opposite here is also Asiatique, which has been converted into old halls that have been in use for a few years. market and restaurants, nice but very expensive. If you are here from New Year's Eve, this is highly recommended if you want to see beautiful fireworks, on the river the boats are filled with fireworks and they are set off with all their splendor. Definitely recommended, but super busy because Thais can celebrate from here. If you want to stay higher up on the river, if your budget is lower, you could choose the side of Kao San Road. It is much cheaper here and there are also many Backpackers staying here, we found this very hectic, with all types of music very loudly mixed together. to.
You don't just go in all directions in Bangkok, by the way, Bangkok is a metropolis and immensely large.
If you want to be more in the center, you could try the side of Ratachdamri (skytrain), next to Siam THE shopping center and close to Sukhumvit Road, there are also several hotels here.
Of course it depends on what you are looking for in Bangkok, you have to know that in advance because you are not just on the other side of downtown.

Koh Chang is a relaxed island, and indeed 7 hours by bus. On the way you pass Pattaya (not our favorite) a little further is Rayong, definitely worth a visit (Koh Samet island) but for 1 day it makes little sense, you won't see much then I think.

Koh Chang is busier than Koh Kood, if you want more people around you then a stay on Koh Chang is more suitable for you, we always stayed at Kai Bea Beach very nice. If you come for nature and tranquility (no evening / nightlife), Koh Kood is again applicable to stay longer. A beautiful island but very quiet. Koh Mak is also perhaps also recommended.
We found 4 days on the smaller and quieter island (Koh Kood/Koh Mak) sufficient, it is very quiet there. A stay on Koh Chang is up to you, we have been there about 6 times, first time 3 weeks and last time 1 week, but every time it is always very nice to be here again.
This year we chose Koh Samet as an extra outing, here too fantastic beaches and slightly less busy than Koh Chang but busier than Koh Kood. Plenty of entertainment in the evening which is so much fun when the night falls.

    Have fun and Chockdee Khab
