Dear readers,

I recently read that KLM will/will charge extra costs for hold baggage. Now I have booked through EVA and have to pay 27 euros extra for a seat reservation. Does this also have to do with changed flight path?

Regards,

Joe

    Well,

    just a quick question;

Have you booked a ticket with EvaAir for a KLM flight? or for a flight with EvaAir.
And did you book directly online with EvaAir or through a travel agency?

Eva has a new prize system. With different rules regarding suitcases, seats and prices. This because of the competition (people who are blinded by the price). See posts from the beginning of this year on this blog and at Eva herself.

It is free 48 hours before departure.

      • KeesP says up

I don't think that will be of much use to you, since the choice will then be minimal.

    • Dennis says up

Well, KLM is now almost always at the top of the list based on "cheapest", but if you add the suitcase surcharge, then you will (of course) be more expensive. But then you are already in the reservation process and KLM is probably betting that they then don't give up so quickly.

Incidentally, when departing from Germany (Dusseldorf for example) and the ticket is considerably cheaper and the suitcase (23 kg max) is free. You can save up to €200 with KLM Netherlands. And if you want to save yourself € 10 booking costs, you can also book on the AirFrance site, then you do not pay any booking costs.

EVA Air is now walking the same path. Since the loss of the competitor (China Airlines) they can afford a little more room to maneuver

klm departure from dusseldorf. Cheaper than direct from Amsterdam. Cheaper but has its price! You fly both there and back via Amsterdam to Dusseldorf. So significantly longer flight time. Moreover, only attractive if you live a bit closer to Dusseldorf than to Schiphol. If you live in North Holland, for example, then departure from Dusseldorf does not seem such a nice alternative!

  3. Enrico says up

There is a competitive battle. People look for the cheapest fares, which is why airlines are increasingly displaying basic fares. That is striking, but look for each company to see what extra costs may be added.

  4. Enrico says up

Düsseldorf can be cheaper with KLM. Interesting if you live in the southeast of the Netherlands.
You have to go to Dusseldorp first and you also have travel costs.
I myself want to go home as soon as possible after a long flight

  5. Kees Janssen says up

Comparison is becoming increasingly difficult. Norwegian Airways is often at the top. However, with all the surcharges and extra expenses on board, this turns out to be wrong.
Transparency is ideal. However, you will only see the total cost when you have completed everything completely.

    Dear,
KLM has had a price for many years that has to compete with other airlines. They keep that price as low as possible. But they do come up with ways to generate money and devised the system to sell seats that you can choose yourself. If you do not want this, the remaining seats will be looked at and you will be assigned a seat for which you will of course not pay anything. Now EVA Air has copied this and they are doing the same. The difference is that KLM flights are cheaper than with EVA Air and the seats at KLM are 25 euros. Greetings from Stephen

    • he says up

      KLM is no longer cheap
on a Business Class Eva or KLM, Eva is 1000 euros cheaper than KLM
I don't know if you have to pay the extra for the suitcase at KLM

    • Erwin Fleur says up

      Dear Stephan,

KLM charges money for almost everything.
If you only have a backpack then the price is right.

I have a family so pay for the tickets and luggage space (member 10 euros less).
      45 € and without 55 €.

If you wait until the check-in time, the seats are usually free, with the exception of the best leg room.

If you book more suitcases in one name, the price will go up twice.

Now flew with KLM again due to passport problems that I will come back to later.
Another thing is that they now fly with the 777 which takes 11 hours which is 11,5 on the way back (not fast).

On the outward journey it was a mess! Nothing was cleaned up or picked up, drinks available
on a small tray for many people. There was also no one to help during the night (good sleep).

On the way back better and again good sevice.
Tip!!! Do not book a seat before the check-in time, you will pay the full ferry.

I feel sorry for KLM, but no more!

      Yours faithfully,

      Erwin

KLM cheaper? Not when I wanted to book. KLM had sneakily hidden the suitcase costs, making it seem as if they were cheaper. Fly with EVA now because their ticket price was fair. I just find it ridiculous to pay extra for a seat reservation. I'm just waiting to see what seats are left.

  7. Unclewin says up

Coincidentally, I just discovered that Lufthansa and Swiss (same family) also charge for a seat reservation.
Another reason for me to choose another airline for the time being.

  8. Kees says up

Add 80 euros to the KLM price indeed. Looks like they want to make it nice and opaque again. From Belgium you do pay the suitcase surcharge. I only bought a small suitcase, because I never take much with me. Large suitcase usually weighs about 13 kg. I don't have to wait that long at the baggage carousel at Schiphol either.

  9. Wilma says up

Dennis. From Dusseldorf with KLM to Bangkok Is it also direct?
Or do you first fly from Dusseldorf to Schiphol for a transfer to a KLM plane?

    • john says up

the last. with klm dusseldorf amsterdam and then from amsterdam to bangkok. And back just like that in reverse.

  10. he says up

If you reserve the seat when booking, you have to pay
do you do it at check in it's free

But this was already with KLM.
this question also 50 euros for one way for hold luggage

    It all costs money nowadays

  11. Hans van Mourik says up

    That's right.
On 08_02_2019 I booked a ticket with Eva Air Schiphol.
    Bangkok _ Amsterdam outward 28_05_2020 return 26_07_2020.
Cost then 602 Euro, that is now 539 Euro.
At 602, hold luggage is included.
539 does not include checked baggage.
I wonder if they also get food and drinks on board.
    Hans

  12. Henk says up

    Hi Wilma,
From Dusseldorf there is a direct flight provided by Eurowings.
    KLM/Airfrance is indirect (I think DUS/AMS/BKK)

When we plan to go to Thailand, I calmly review what we need and compare the various rates. Based on this, we determine how, with whom and from where we fly.
In the past, Eurowings from Dusseldorf were usually favored because of the price. Dusseldorf is perhaps a bit further by car, but parking is relatively cheap there, and check-in etc is super there.

The last time we flew with EVA air from Amsterdam. At that time this was cheaper and accessibility via NS (not always a certainty, incidentally) matched the travel times perfectly. Eva air also has the advantage of slightly better legroom.

  13. Henry says up

    Dear Dennis,

If you depart with KLM from DUS with KLM or AF, the 23 kilo suitcase costs €80. I just booked, only the baggage is free if you fly business class and also the seat. !

  14. Rymond says up

I booked in February and am leaving in November for less than €600 at eva air and was able to choose a seat right away

    • Robert says up

      Booking early is usually cheaper

  15. CorWan says up

Last year in Aug trip booked with emirates for 607€ to dec. to travel to Bkk, you could
immediately book your seat for € 25, but you could also wait until 48 hours before departure
the free, 4 days before departure I received an email from emirates that I had to book now
because the seats were almost all occupied, but I still waited until I could book for free
and could certainly choose from more than 100 seats so don't let yourself be scared and
wait with booking especially with emirates have never experienced that the device was full

  16. Robert says up

EVA air….. For me still the best airline to travel with.
Food and drink goes well and the price for the economy is okay….
If you spend more for your ticket, you also have more comfort,
But even then EVA would choose air..... ASD -BKK direct and that's worth something.
    Robert

    • john says up

but the flight from bangkok to amsterdam is a daytime flight for both eva and klm. But is done as a night flight: hours after departure hot meal and the lights go out. I'm not a fan of daytime flights

    • A says up

Certainly the best airline just ticket all incl is the best no costs afterwards. Eva Air is simply good in relation to other airlines.

  17. Willem says up

Hello, I flew Amsterdam Bangkok with Etihad in June this year for € 420.00 incl. luggage and seat reservation. Go check it out on skyscanner.

Robert is right, we also choose Eva air, much better service and food / drink is also worth a lot, after all, you are on the road for at least 12 hours

  19. Frank says up

correct, seat reservation EVA air, with associated costs, is new. If you do not want to reserve a seat, you will be given a seat that is available upon check-in. Same KLM.

  20. nicky says up

Even in business class you have to pay extra for seat reservations

  21. joe says up

Every commercial company want maximum earnings, I'm going now for the 67th time, Eva remains the best direct airline for me and many to fly with, I'm going the 5th Sept, and if you open the web of Eva there's not much seat choice (aisle) about when you check in 48 hours in advance. It would be nice if you can do something with Greenmile / additional payment..

    Thank you for the response.

    Dear,

I booked my flights with Thai Airways with Joker at the beginning of last week. Also see https://www.thailandblog.nl/lezersvraag/lezersvraag-zijn-er-geen-aanbiedingen-voor-vliegtickets-naar-bangkok-meer/

During my booking I always try to secure my seats immediately. Both Joker and Connections. And that has now also succeeded for both flights. Without extra costs! Hopefully that choice will be honored at check-in.

    Regards.

  23. Marco says up

Airlines have tickets in different booking classes. So is Eve.
The cheapest classes have fewer “extras”. Less luggage, fewer miles and no free seat reservation.
The problem is that nowadays people often book through a third party/website that does not indicate all the details of the ticket for that price.
Eva still has free seat reservations, but not in the cheapest class.

This applies to Economy, Premium and business.
