Home » Reader question » Reader question: Belgian health insurance fund and a long stay in Thailand
Dear readers,
What do the Belgians who have been living in Thailand with their home address in Belgium for at least a year do if they fall ill or have an accident? The mutuality actually only covers 90 days. If you then have to be admitted after a year's stay and you cannot fly back yourself. Do I think you have a problem?
Are there any Belgians who have experience with this? Thanks in advance for the tips.
Regards,
Bert
Dear Bert,
With Europe-assistance (travel insurance) “Prestige contract” you used to be very well insured for 6 months… But I am afraid that the new policies only cover for three months…and then you can buy extra months…quite expensive…it used to be very cheap.
Success!
Jacks
With the travel insurance of the VAB you can renew per month and it is not expensive at all. You are insured for 3 months with the insurance on your car. I myself renew every time by 3 months
Please inform yourself again because the conditions have changed!
I myself have a very bad experience with VAB travel insurance. Refuse payment of medical expenses incurred when it comes down to it!
They employ full-time physician counselors to dismiss as many files as possible. They make those decisions without any contact with you, let alone a medical exam.
Travel to Thailand is not covered by the health insurance fund.
Not entirely correct. The Precaution does still cover worldwide, 3 months from the day of the event (accident, illness, etc.). The other health insurance companies no longer cover destinations outside Europe.
I believe this too.
Last year I had to go to the hospital in Bkk for 1 day during my vacation, and nothing was reimbursed by the mutuality. Well through my insurance;
Hi,
When I came here in 2015, a CM employee told me, stay connected, even if you live in Thailand you can enjoy the same benefits as in Belgium. But what turned out? Doctor costs, etc. are only refundable if they are made in Belgium, so just plain bullshit. But in the meantime they have been able to collect my contribution for a few years. If you ever need surgery or any other treatment and it's not too urgent, just return to Belgium straight to the hospital and get your refund, after which you can return back to Thailand. If not possible (urgent or if so) yes then you have no other choice, something like the bruise and the bump.
Greetings
Roger
If you leave Belgium without additional travel insurance, you are indeed covered by MUTAS for a period of 90 days, if your health insurance fund is part of it. However, there are a number of misunderstandings about this, in which MUTAS and the health insurance fund contradict each other. Let me explain: according to MUTAS, this extra insurance starts from the moment you leave the country... According to some health insurance funds, MUTAS insurance only starts when you apply for it abroad and then there is cover for 3 months. I also received these contradictory messages and I can't make sense of them because they contradict each other. However, to be sure, you can take out travel insurance in Belgium (you must be in Belgium to take out this travel insurance, it is not possible from abroad!). This can be done with VAB or Europ Assistance, please note, both differ considerably in price. Their basic policy also covers 3 months, but you can extend this to 1 year (Long Stay) from the start with a reasonable surcharge. Please inquire thoroughly with your health insurance fund and then take out any additional insurance. Please note: some health insurance funds do not work with MUTAS (including CV and Independent).
Indeed Yan, according to my health insurance fund “Bond Moyson” the 90 days only starts from the time of admission to a hospital for illness or accident. You must then contact Mutas directly. I will ask Mutas himself for information about what it is like in reality. I am also planning to stay in Thailand for 6 months next winter, from November to the end of April. Over the past 4 years I have been going to Thailand twice a year for 2 months, Jan, Feb, March and July, August and September. Due to Corona I have already been unable to leave twice, I have been back in Belgium since 3/2/01. Thank you for the information about VAB & Europe Assistance travel insurance.
CM, Liberal health insurance fund and some of the socialist health insurance companies are affiliated with MUTAS but do not cover outside Europe, not even the first 90 days, except for children who are still entitled to child benefit!!!
Has this changed recently? At the end of 2019, my wife was admitted to a hospital in Indonesia. MUTAS paid everything directly to that hospital. We are affiliated with Bond Moyson – De Voorzorg Antwerpen.
indeed, as I wrote, PART of the socialist unions are still paying back.
FSMB (Mutas) does not provide coverage in Thailand, whatever one may claim!!
Taking out additional insurance is the message to avoid unpleasant surprises in the event of illness/accident/hospitalization…
My son received written proof from Mutas that everything was covered in Thailand when he left. And even mentioned that it was also covered for covid. Because that was what the Thai embassy had to do. So he had free insurance. And even for dental problems. You can also see my other response here about my son, insured with Mutas for 9 months in total. I have also needed this twice for hospitalization, and I received everything reimbursed, and that was even for a 5-day hospitalization in the Bangkok hospital. And then another two-day stay in the Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok, one of the most expensive hospitals in Thailand. You don't have to pay anything yourself.
What I also heard at De Voorzorg is that the 3-month insurance starts counting from the moment you use it. My son left for Thailand in July 2020 to attend his mother's funeral. A lot of hassle afterwards, through the court and lawyers, so he had to stay longer in Thailand. He called De Voorzorg and explained the whole situation why he has to stay longer, and they just extended the free insurance for 6 months. De Voorzorg also informs Mutas itself. But with normal residence for one year in Thailand, the quarterly insurance starts from the moment you need it.
We have recently had experience with this. Last winter (2019-2020) we were in Indonesia and Thailand for 5 months. In the first few weeks my wife developed a severe infection in her leg, for which she needed intravenous antibiotics. After contact with Mutas, she was hospitalized for 6 days. Everything was paid for by Mutas. Well arranged. Our health insurance company (Bond Moyson) then contacted us to inform us that the maximum period of 3 months had started. We were advised to take out another insurance policy to cover the period afterwards. I tried to take out VAB insurance, but that was indeed only possible from Belgium. It was possible to conclude the Euro-assistance from Thailand. This insurance runs for one year and is then automatically extended. After our return, I canceled this insurance again by registered letter.
Another addition: after returning home we did receive a bill of € 250 for the francise of Mutas.

Travel to a country that has received negative travel advice from the FPS Foreign Affairs is also not covered. Today, Thailand has no negative travel advice, but this must be followed.

My son has De Voorzorg, free insurance extension for Thailand for 6 months. And start from when you need them. No franchise, everything is arranged through Mutas. And everything is clearly stated on the contract and on the e-mail he received. Even covid expenses are fully refunded if applicable. Other mutual funds seem to be having a hard time lately. The claim that Mutas does not cover is totally wrong. Have already needed them 2X with hospitalization in Thailand and got everything paid back nicely, and no franchise. What I often read here, well then we will certainly have the good mutual insurance.
Ivm. with my Certificate of Entry from the Thai Embassy to be allowed to travel to Thailand, I applied to Bond Moyson for proof of insurance, but they would only provide it for a predetermined period of 3 months.
I wanted to remind them that the insurance only starts from the moment you make your first sick report. I then did get proof of insurance through another employee without a set period, whereupon I received a furious response from the first employee I had contact with, who was apparently higher in rank, that she blamed me for ' behind her back' had nevertheless received a certificate of insurance without a fixed period of 3 months.
Then take out an expensive private insurance policy.
But there is always disagreement about the duration of Mutas's insurance, i.e. is that insurance only for a trip of 3 months or does that duration only start from the moment you report the first illness, regardless of how long the travel period is.
I had a Belgian friend, who died of cancer, who lived permanently in Thailand for years and never had any problem with Mutas to get costs reimbursed.
Dear Nick,
don't know how long it has been since that friend, who died of cancer, has not had any problems with reimbursing his medical expenses in Thailand. Do not lose sight of the fact that, a few years ago, it was not MUTAS that was responsible for this. Then it was EUROCROSS and there were no problems with that if you were a 'tourist' in Thailand. It's only when they switched from Eurocross to Mutas that the mess started. And by the way, it was Bond Moyson who was the first to stop providing worldwide coverage…. the others followed and when the time came it was the Bon Moyson who pulled his tail first!!!!
Dear Lung addie, first of all I wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year! I used to be affiliated with the CM Health Insurance Fund and in the month of December 2016 I received a message that Mutas would no longer be responsible for travel insurance during my 3-month stay in Thailand, with effect from 01/01/2017. I had applied for my forms before leaving for Thailand for a stay from 01 January to 01 April 2017. I then switched to Bond Moyson because with them it is still as before, insured for 3 months from the date you use the insurance. I have previously been admitted to the hospital in Pattaya twice and everything has been paid back by Mutas VIA the Bond Moyson health insurance fund. It is even reimbursed by the health insurance fund for medication and consultation of a home doctor. When I return to Belgium, I bring the notes, (made up in English from the doctor or pharmacy, that is), to Belgium and deliver them to the health insurance fund, everything will be reimbursed, according to the limits in Belgium. It has never been different, previously it was indeed insured WORLDWIDE with EuroCross, with which the health insurance funds worked together to obtain travel insurance for a stay abroad! I plan to leave for Thailand again from July, after getting the 2 injections with the vaccine. I will then let you know if there are any changes in connection with the travel insurance “Mutas” and, if necessary, also of “EuroCross”
