Reader question: Car rental in Surin
Dear readers,
I am going to Surin Thailand for a week in the second week of March. I would like to rent a car there. Who can advise me what is the best thing to do?
Or arrange it online in the Netherlands or do it locally? Does anyone have experience in the Surin region of renting a car?
I hope someone can help me with info.
Regards,
Marcel
Dear Marcel,
Surin is not a region. There is a province of Surin and its capital is also called Surin. So now the question is what do you mean. Another important comment is: how do you get there. Because if you go directly from the airport to Surin, it is better to travel by rental car. You can probably already make reservations in the Netherlands at the major car rental companies, but you can also do so on site. Make sure you have an international driver's license and opt for good insurance on the spot.
Dear Marcel,
I don't know Surin, but I have rented a car in Thailand several times via: Rentalcar.com I usually end up at Thai rent a car. A very good and reliable company. Booking directly with them is more expensive.
Success!
P@ggy
Rent a car at Thai rent a car including insurance for years. In my opinion very good price ratio and service and have never had an international driver's license has never been asked at the rental company and if the police ask for a driver's license, which has happened to me before, they only look at what is on it and as soon as they deciphered that it concerns a Dutch driver's license, they laugh and were always allowed to drive on.
You could rent a car in Surin, but it's just as easy at the airport as you can travel at your own time, which I find very pleasant.
It may be that they have never asked for an international driver's license from Herbert, but I would still bring one. In the event of an accident, I do not know whether the insurance will pay if you do not have a driver's license
I was once hit by a Thai, and my Dutch driver's license was enough for the insurance.
In Surin (city) you have 2 car rental companies (at least for Farangs); Farang Connection and Jimmy's Carrental.
Farang Connection has its own website, but personally I have the impression that they are dying. I don't take Jimmy carrental too seriously. On the forum surinfarang.com there are more people who offer (private?) cars, but I personally find that very shadowy. Recently I have not spotted any rental cars at Farang Connection, but maybe all were rented. I think a quick call to Sunee (owner) will quickly clarify things.
Another possibility is Buriram Expats. The owner brings the car to Surin for a surcharge (at the time 800 baht, now possibly more or less). The owner of Buriram Expats is an Israeli who worked for Hertz in Israel. Usually neat cars, but more expensive than the “internationals”.
I always book rental cars through Rentalcars.com and preferably AVIS. THAI Rent a Car is a close 2nd. In principle I do not book Hertz, because despite full advance payment including full insurance, they ask for an astronomical deposit (minimum 30.000 baht).
An international driver's license is not requested by the tenants, but the passport is. But the police DO ask for the international driver's license (if only to be able to impose a fine if it is missing).
My advice, therefore: Rent in advance from a large (inter)national rental company and drive from the airport (not necessarily Suvarnabhumi, even though many airports have a branch for the “big boys”) to Surin. Renting locally is more expensive and not better.
