Dear readers,

I want to go to Thailand from April 9 to May 12. That's more than 30 days.

My question is if I make a visa run over land on May 9, I will still get 15 days so can I stay until May 24? So if I leave on May 12th, isn't that on time? Or is that too simple?

By the way, will I not have a problem upon arrival on April 10 that my stay will last longer than 30 days?

With kind regards,

Percy

No, not too simply put… exactly as you say it. Your “visa” (the stamp in your passport) is valid for 30 days from the day you arrive in Thailand. So until May 10. You have to pay a fine for every day that you stay longer. You pay this at the airport. Costs, I believe, 1000 Baht per day.

Only, I wouldn't wait until May 9. Rather go on May 7 or 8. If something were to happen, you wouldn't run out of time. However, if you only want to leave the country 3 days later after your stamp has expired, you could also go to the immigration office and have your visa extended for a short period.

Sorry, mistake: it is 500 Baht per day. I had the same thing two years ago. I “accidentally” stayed two days longer. A married couple for me the same. The officer took his time writing everything down, but was otherwise friendly. When I asked how many days you could stay longer that way, he replied: up to you…. pay every day!
But here too: If you are unlucky and don't have much time, you could miss your flight…

Dear Sjaak, immigration can only be extended by 30 days and one must be in possession of a single or double entry, otherwise impossible!!! So with visa on arrival no extension possible at immigration!

-See elsewhere on this blog about possible problems when checking in in the Netherlands
-No, you will not have any problems upon arrival.
-Visarun, not strictly necessary. On departure you can buy off your overstay at Suvirabuhmi with 3 times 500B

Dear Percy, don't listen to the advice about overstay, just avoid it and do a visa run on time! It may cause you problems in the future. You are listed with your overstay. Fortunately, there are some sensible reactions to that link that Sjaak S makes. Just do a visa run and that's it, don't take unnecessary stupid risks! You can also apply for 1 entry visa in the Netherlands, you have 60 days of stay!

But of course you can also apply for a visa at the Thai embassy in the Netherlands. They issue (for a fee) a standard holiday visa that is valid for 60 days. And then you can really enjoy your holiday…

totally agree. That's how I always do it!

    Why just about it again?
Wouldn't it be easier to return after 30 days?

Just get a visa before you leave.
A visa run or overstay is also not free.

By the way, it is best to contact your airline if this will not cause any problems on departure.
Some may refuse you because you are traveling without a visa and your return flight is later than 30 days.

    hi all,
so this happened to me. was therefore allowed to pay 13.000 thb at the thailand / laos border.
it was my own stupid fault for not reading / paying attention, well and then you pay.
it was the 1st time that I left for Thailand for longer than 30 days.
    that money is so far…………. but ! ! !
This kind of joke is definitely not recommended
because Customs is constantly complaining about this entry on arrival and departure
    at the airport.
the same shit again when applying for the visa.
Fortunately, I now have a new passport, so that is a thing of the past.
    problem solved

now just counting down 19 days and then enjoying another 3 months in korat
Kind regards, J Pompe The Hague

A visa run is certainly sufficient, if you go to Poipet, the costs are at least 1000bht for a visa for Cambodia, the travel costs will be on top of that. An overstay will cost you 500bht per day and you will need to apply for a tourist visa. will cost a little more, but in case of emergency or bad luck, you are assured that you still have a few days left.

I have understood that overstay can be a problem, not so much if it ends up at the airport upon departure (apart from the fine of course) but if you are picked out at a police check, for example, and your passport/visa is checked, and it turns out that your stay is already a bit too long.
Understand that you then get a kind of "persona non grata" stamp in your passport, so that in the worst case you can not even enter Thailand at all, depending on the duration of the overstay.
The latter seems terrible to me, so I certainly wouldn't want to run the risk of overstaying and just get a visa for a few months. After all, it just happened.

keep an eye on . if you are overstayed. you do indeed pay a fine at the airport. but watch out. this is because you offer yourself voluntarily. Now suppose you have an accident on day 32 - 33 or afterwards, passport control, then you go to prison. as illegal.

good advice: go less than 30 days. or take 1 entry .

Suppose you are overstaying and are checked on the bus to the airport, or in the taxi:

you are illegal. I know 1 Englishman and 1 German who were in prison in that situation, not long because they assumed he wanted to leave. but you are still illegal at that moment.

say you get something for day 32 and you're without your bags, you could go to jail for a long time, and maybe be banned from thai forever. you will then receive a red stamp.

I am currently staying in Thailand for about 10 weeks and have now gone to a neighboring country for the 2nd time. Just before the expiry of the 30 days, I will leave for a while. Works fine, but if I understand correctly I can't do this for the length of days. I think max 90 days in total time span of 180 days (not sure) On departure on November 6 I was not asked anything by Eva Airways while I was prepared for this by having booked a flight from BKK to Saigon. In short, it remains quite unclear what exactly the rules are. The way you suggested works fine though. Good luck!

Doing a visa run to cover 3 days is nothing but adventurous and you can brag about it in the bar. Although many people will have a doubtful laugh about it.

Paying overstay… if you have a grumpy officer who works by the book, he will know that you have landed without being in order with your visa in function of your return journey.

It's not said, but you can get yourself into trouble while you can simply avoid it.

Do not defy fate, follow the rules as it should be, ask for your visa at the Thai embassy.

And above all enjoy your holiday!

    Hi Percy,
I have been in Thailand for a while now and due to problems with an 'educational visa' I had to pay 2x for a few days overstay. No problems getting back into the country. My experience is that the customs officers only look at your last visa.

Your overstay is 4 days (April 9 in plus 30 days = May 8), so a 2.000 Baht fine. The chance that you will be checked in those 4 days is minimal ... say ZERO, and if that happens ... show your plane ticket and say that you pay the overstay ... and I don't think there are any problems.

The alternative means either a visa run. I myself am on Phuket and then the cheapest and fastest way is to Phuket town for a 7-day extension for 1.900 Baht, or to Myanamar for a new 14-day visa … 2.000-2.500 Baht and 1 day in a bus … shame on you holidays.

I don't know where you will be staying around May 8, so check the possibilities for that place yourself.

My advice … pay the overstay and enjoy an extra day of your holiday. a friend of mine has lived on phuket for over 25 years and works on the oil rigs. Always enter on a 30-day tourist visa and regularly pay a few days overstay fine. Never had any problems.
Getting a 60-day single entry visa in NL also takes time and € 35 (if I'm correct).

Wishing you lots of holiday fun.

Our advice is not to take any risks with an overstay. You are in Thailand illegally. If you get involved in an incident or accident, you're well off, because you weren't allowed to be in Thailand. And try to talk it out…

      • Mathias says up

Totally agree. I also do not understand that people proudly write that they have overstay and also write this down as advice here!

Illegal is a fine of up to 20.000 bht or 2 years in prison! You understand that the police smell money here. Detain you and threaten with imprisonment or e.g. 100.000 bht fine. yes there you are and you have to make a decision. What are you doing? Sit comfortably or pay that 100.000 as quickly as possible and get out of that police cell like the fuck? Don't think that choice is that difficult if you hopefully still have that money somewhere in your locker?

Nice pdf on nvtpattaya.org (Dutch Pattaya Association)
Download it and read it carefully!

Why take so much risk, in every ANWB shop you can easily arrange all visas for Thailand.
You submit the requested documents and within 1 week you can pick up your passport with your visa.

    Dear Percy

If you happen to be all the way in the south, I would say hop over to Malaysia. It costs nothing and even if you return the same day, the countdown starts again, so you have 30 days again. I'll do this again this summer. And eh… Malaysia is really not a punishment!!!

  16. Percy says up

    Dear all
Thank you very much for your responses
Think I'm going to apply for a visa for 60 days via ANWB, especially since the airline can make problems. By the way, I'm going with the cheapest KLM at the moment. Don't know if it will be difficult.
    Regards, Percy
