Home » Reader question » Reader question: From Koh Samui to Phuket by boat, is that possible?
Dear readers,
On May 10 we want to go from Koh Samui to Phuket. Some say take the plane. But we want by boat. Is that recommended?
We ourselves stay there in a resort in the south. Do I have to take into account a long travel time or is it not too bad?
With kind regards,
Hans
That will certainly be a very nice trip. If you make the trip south you have to bypass Singapore. That will soon be about 3.000 km over the water. By land it is 300 km, maximum
good trip!
Arjen
By boat from Koh Samui to Phuket? That's a nice one. Too bad they still haven't dug that Khra Channel through southern Thailand. It is now about as far sailing as from the Netherlands to Greece.
Has the questioner ever looked at the map of Thailand? Or from this part of Asia?
Do you have any idea where Koh Samui and Phuket are located?
There is still a piece of land in between, so from east (gulf of Thailand Samui) to west (Andaman sea Phuket) you either have to take a bus or a taxi or you have to fly from Samui. What you can do is take the ferry to Suratthani and from there overland to Krabi and from Krabi you can take another ferry to Phuket here you also have the opportunity to visit Koh Phi Phi (stopover) for a few hours or a overnight, and then sail to Phuket. It's cumbersome, but then you see something. Flight from Samui to Phuket takes one hour.

Has the questioner ever seen the map of Thailand, maybe he is on the wrong island, a mistake is possible, isn't it?
Do give those people a boat trip if they want to spend a while at sea, everything is possible, everything is allowed.
Have a nice trip Hans.
Yes, I did that a few weeks ago. You go by boat from Nathon to Surtthani. Buses are waiting there to various places including Phuket. There is a man calling where the buses are.
Sorry, it's the ferry from Nathon to Don Sak. You can buy combination tickets everywhere.
Good question, just not enough information.
What does Hans want? From Koh Samui to Phuket as quickly as possible? Then it's simple: the plane, of course. This comes with a hefty price tag because flying to and from Koh Samui is relatively expensive compared to other domestic flights. This is because Samui Airport is actually private (BKK airways). Flight time about an hour… should not be at the airport 2 hours in advance because it is a domestic flight… an hour in advance is more than enough for the check in….
Then by boat. I assume that Hans wants to know how long it takes by boat, and by that he probably doesn't mean sailing from Koh Samui to Phuket completely, because that would be a long trip. So take the ferry from Koh Samui to the mainland, Don Sak and then continue by bus to Phuket … Count on a day trip for that. Leave in the morning and you'll be there late in the afternoon.
Let us now assume that Hans has his own boat and wants to take it to Phuket. Yes, then he can make the round trip by sailing from the Gulf of Thailand, past Malaysia and Singapore, to the Andaman Sea ... a long way and certainly not with a small boat in December-January because then you have very strong winds in the south.
If it is a yacht, he can also sail to Don Sak, have his boat removed from the water, put it on a trailer and have it brought overland to Kra Buri, for example. From Kra Buri you can sail to Ranong via the river and from there you have access to the Andaman Sea and Phuket. Not possible in the dry season such as the month of May due to too little depth. In the rainy season this is feasible with a maximum draft of 1 metre. Hans will be on the road for a few days but will have seen a lot.
Have fun traveling,
Lung addie
