Home » Reader question » Reader question: How do we get children's clothing for an orphanage in Thailand?
Dear readers,
My wife and I collected children's clothing for the Baan Jing Jai Children's House in Pattaya. We have now received a lot of clothing, much more than we can take with us on the plane in January.
Our question is whether someone can help us transport about 50 kilos of children's clothing to Pattaya. The costs for air freight are about 800 euros and per sea freight it is also about 300 euros. We think that's a bit too much and that's why we're looking for help and/or advice from the readers of this blog.
Someone else may also have to send a few things to Thailand or we can send a container to Thailand with several people. Or is there a company in the Netherlands that regularly ships goods to a branch in Thailand. Any help is welcome.
Please your response.
Yours faithfully,
Gerard
Gerard, try using windmill forwarding. This is a moving company in the Netherlands that does many moves to Asia. Maybe your boxes can hitch a ride with a shipment to Thailand or possibly at a reduced rate. Then only the volume is looked at. I also regularly send used children's clothing to my in Thailand using DHLforyou. That costs per box max 10 kg € 32,50.
Perhaps you can try Muthathara in Castricum, which is a second-hand store that sends all the knowledge to Africa. I think they are also poking at your idea. Good luck; Andre
Contact klm support or wings. Cabin crew can then take it to Bangkok. You can then pick it up at the crew hotel. Or make a call on facebook for klm crew heading bangkok. Good luck!!

1 box of 20 kg is picked up at home, € 47,20
Good thing it was collected. But now think? 50 kg really isn't much. In many places in Thailand/Cambodia 'second hand' clothing can be bought for as little as 20-100 baht/kg. So for 50-75 euros you also have those 50 kg here. Supposedly second-hand, but usually it is brand new, but with a very small flaw. (lots that are rejected). At almost all 'student' markets you can pick out second-hand clothes for 5-20 baht per item. Wouldn't that orphanage be much better helped with a substantial donation or with people who will really help for a few weeks.
Why collect clothes. The costs you incur there you can buy entire clothing stalls empty on the market. From children's clothing to juniors and seniors. Think it is much more cost effective. And the advantage is that you help everyone in Thailand with it from the sellers to those who get it. And you don't have to arrange anything yourself to get the clothing from abroad (collection) there. If you want to do something, it's better to do it there. Resume: buy there on the market and give it away or take it to the destination yourself.
Succes
I recently had to pay € 45 tax in Thailand on my box that I received from the Netherlands.
It was my birthday present with some food and clothes in it.
In any case, I would also take into account that these costs are still on top.
Thailand is not that cheap yet.
Ruddy
Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to work with it. Given the fact that the clothing is almost new, I try to send it.
