Has Thailand become less safe for tourists?

Dear readers,

I've heard a rumor that tourist robberies are on the rise in Thailand. Due to the increasing poverty, as a result of the absence of tourists in the corona era.

Is that right? Can Dutch farangs in Thailand tell us something about that? Has Thailand really become less safe?

Regards,

Edgar

I've experienced the time when you could safely leave your wallet on the bar, I wouldn't do that anymore.
But to say that Thailand has become less safe is going too far for me, I think it has become less safe all over the world.

Hello that's a bit of your own fault make sure you don't show money in the open public and don't put your wallet in your pocket then know there's money there and keep your gold at home then it won't be a problem and take money with you for the day two thousand bath gr will essers

No Thailand is not less safe. Only some tourists are dumber. If you walk through Amsterdam or Antwerp wearing gold jewelry, you also run the risk of being robbed.

In Isaan (Sakon Nakhon) where I stay there is hardly any crime. And recently I was in Don Muang airport in Bangkok. I left my photo bag with material worth 2500 Euro in a restaurant. When we returned after an hour, the staff told us that they had followed us (my wife and I) but couldn't find us anymore. They kept the bag for safekeeping. And if we had not returned before closing time, they would have handed it over to the reception at the airport. So much respect for someone else's property in a metropolis. Cheers! Would something like this be possible in Brussels? At night I feel much safer in Bangkok than during the day in the Belgian capital! That's for sure!

You should not go out in the nightlife with expensive jewelry and eye-catching watch because that is asking for trouble but that is true everywhere in tourist areas where you remain “the rich foreigner” – just use your mind is the best

Rumors are what they are. However, I cannot confirm this. We visited Phuket 2 times between November last year and April this year and 2 weeks in Bangkok. Nowhere did I feel unsafe. What is striking, especially in Bangkok, is that the Tuk Tuk drivers are more insistent than before. The well-known shopping states for sure. But if you refuse it assertively, this won't happen. With taxis you have to insist on using the meter, especially in Bangkok. Scams, on the other hand, are timeless. Closed attractions, last day 50% discount, etc. You don't fall for that 5 times .... I think you should be more afraid of tourists than of the Thai population. No matter how hard it may be for some. Offering a little less in certain cases can also help.

I have been in Thailand for 1 month in February and never felt unsafe anywhere, it was like before covid. I live there among the Thai population and not in the big tourist centers. I do know that many have financial problems.

    Dear Edward,
Unfortunately probably not a superfluous luxury to be extra careful now. Also read the experience on the following site: https://thethaiger.com/hot/news/crime/khao-san-scam-tourists-forced-to-pay-for-returning-lost-wallet.

      Hi Kobus,

This trick is used in several forms in Thailand.
There are a lot of scams and half-scams in Thailand, as in many other countries.
Have already witnessed several, including within Thai families.
I even think that the average tourist is confronted with this on a daily basis and just doesn't realize it
Fortunately, many of these scams are not aggressive or violent.
The punishments in Thailand and the Thai are too sharp for that.

What there was insecurity and robberies 40 years ago in the Netherlands (I'm from Amsterdam), is now nowhere near in Thailand. Paying attention is always good, and leaving your wallet is not necessary / smart, right? Come on, you will experience it as a relief.

      Simon,

I also feel safer in bangkok than in amsterdam.
      But feeling safer is subjective.

      crime rate safety index
      1 Pattaya, Thailand 46.45 53.55
      2 Bangkok, Thailand 40.98 59.02
      3 Chiang Mai, Thailand 23.91 76.09

      Amsterdam 33.06 66.94

    Dear Edward,
heard rumours? If there's one thing you shouldn't rely on, it's hearsay. After all, you do not know the circumstances and often it is based on nothing.
In Pattaya, there was a plague of robbery of gold necklaces and 'coincidentally' all Indian tourists. However, this smelled strongly of insurance fraud as these robbed persons all 'coincidentally' had insurance for that expensive necklace.
I certainly don't notice anything of a more unsafe situation, but then again, I don't walk stupidly drunk either, a hole in the night, through small dark alleys with half a gold shop of jewelry, as decoration, around my neck.

The only unsafe thing in Thailand is the traffic.
