Home » Reader question » Reader question: International driver's license translation into English
Dear readers,
I have a Thai motorcycle license and now I also want to obtain a car license. My international (Belgian international in Dutch, French and German) expires on July 23rd. Since my international driver's license does not mention English, it must therefore be translated as the Thai service requires it.
In the past, this could be solved by a CTA translation agency and then legalized at the Austrian consulate in Pattaya. The translation agency says that this is no longer possible. I also know from a good source that the Belgian embassy refuses to legalize this kind of translation.
Does anyone know how to do it right now?
Groet
Rudi (BE)
So you still have time to arrange it before July 23.
Go to the department of transport with the international driver's license and the necessary papers and make sure you have all the papers with you.
A translation is not necessary and the national driving license has it in terms of content. No English translation in the international driver's license is strange. That is exactly what the international driver's license stands for.
It does not matter that the international driving license expires after the 28th.
The German embassy has addresses of recognized translation agencies D-TH-D on its website and they will do it for you at a rate of, I'm not sure, 1.000 b per pg. If your rbw is also in German, that can be a solution but ..;. whether you still have to have it legalized on Chaeng Wattana afterwards is something to ask.
Of course you can also take an exam in Pattaya. Piece of cake.
I just went with my Dutch driver's license (without translation), immigration papers and a doctor's statement to the driving licenses office, where Thais also get their driver's license. Did a small test there, watched a one-hour traffic movie, and got my Thai driver's license!
First for a year, and after a year exchanged for 5 years validity.
Was that in Pattaya?
I have just checked my Belgian international, although it has just been renewed in Belgium in May, and this has 6 pages, namely in Dutch, German, English, Spanish (I presume), French and even Russian .....
Can't remember if my old also had so many languages ....?
But please note that if you are deregistered from Belgium, you can only renew this in Belgium, not possible at Be.Ambassade Bangkok.
And if you have to do this in Antwerp, the gentlemen and ladies only work there by appointment now and then only from Tuesday to Friday, the latter caught me back 2 days before leaving for Thailand so that I could only do so on Tuesday, and then came appointment problem still throw a spanner in the works, luckily they were able to adjust a proverbial sleeve.
Be warned Antwerp residents if you need renewal !!
He probably means the 1 and 2 page.
They are also only available in our three national languages.
The following pages are in the languages you list.
Here in Chiang Mai everything is apparently much more difficult than in other places. Especially the lady who receives you is the troublemaker, she does not give you the opportunity to go to the counters and ask for an explanation. Years ago I did theory and practical tests with congratulations from the examiners. After the first year I wanted to exchange the temporary driver's license for a 5-year one, according to her, this should not be done before the end of the temporary driving license. Then something happened that I still don't understand. The next day I receive an email from a driving school who wanted to arrange it for me for a fee. Possibly she has/had an interest in that? At my age I decided not to and have been driving with a driver ever since.
As a Belgian you have an international driving license drawn up in accordance with the international treaty on road traffic of November 8, 1968. This is not recognized by the Thai government. Perhaps to drive in Thailand for a limited time, but not as a basis for issuing a Thai driver's license. They only recognize international driver's licenses issued according to a 1949 treaty.
The only solution is therefore to have your Belgian driving license translated into English.
The translation must be done by a translator recognized by the Belgian embassy. You can get the list at the embassy. If you give me your email address, I can send you the list of 2017.
The translation must later be legalized at the embassy.
It is strange that I then obtained my 2-year and later my 5-year Thai driving licenses for car and motorcycle without a driving test, only with a Belgian international driving license and Belgian national driving license, no translations needed
Sounds like a bus what you all say.
Had the same problem in Chiang Mai.
I just went to Lampang with my Thai boyfriend. They weren't difficult at all. After 30 minutes I was back outside with 2 Thai driving licenses valid for 2 years. Exchanged in Chiang Mai at the beginning of this year because they had expired, had no problems and a Belgian International driving license was no longer necessary. Rest easy for 5 years now.
for the list of translations recognized by the embassy.

Is it so difficult to just post the link of the embassy so that it is accessible to everyone.
That's how hard it is.

hereby e-mail address. and copy email Belgian embassy; Is there a translation agency in Pattata and ...... Who can legalize then?,,,.
Dear,
We cannot legalize translations of a driver's license.
To accommodate our compatriots, we can envisage a translation (does not have to be by an accredited translator) into English. You must present the translation with a copy of your original driving license to the embassy. Delivery takes 1 working day.
This service is provided free of charge.

It is indeed not a formal legalization, but an ordinary stamp and signature of an embassy employee (so without the legalization formula on the document). So actually an act without legal value, but which is accepted by the Thai DLTs.
About the recognized or unrecognized translators: strange, last year I myself was referred by the embassy to their list of recognized translators…
It is indeed strange, because that is how you could actually translate it yourself…
Endorsing is actually nothing more than signing “For seen”.
Well, yes, it's free.
And I also assume that a stamp from an employee of the Embassy of Belgium will be sufficient for them.
Here you can find the list of 2018
http://thailand.diplomatie.belgium.be/sites/default/files/content/list_transl_offices.pdf
For your information.
Regarding the translation and legalization of the driver's license
see that link from the embassy
http://thailand.diplomatie.belgium.be/nl/consulaire-diensten/rijbewijs
Procedure to obtain a foreign (national / international) driver's license
For information regarding the conditions for obtaining a foreign driving license (issued, for example, by the Thai, Cambodian, Laotian or Burmese governments) you should contact the competent authority of your current place of residence.
Since there is not always a bilateral agreement on this matter between Belgium and the country concerned, you may be subjected to a theoretical and/or practical test in order to obtain this driving licence.
Comments:
The Embassy of Belgium in Bangkok and the Belgian honorary consuls are not authorized to legalize documents delivered in Belgium, intended for use abroad, or to issue a certified copy thereof, nor to require a translation of these documents carried out by a translator listed on the list of the Embassy if this translation is intended for use by a foreign government.
For the legalization of documents (and their translation) delivered in Belgium and intended for use abroad, you must, after legalization, apply to the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs (see: http://diplomatie.belgium.be/nl/Diensten/legalisatie_van_documenten/faq/), contact the embassy of the country concerned in Brussels. After that, these documents still have to be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country concerned before they can be submitted to the competent local authority.
For any additional information regarding the legalization procedure for documents, please consult the website of the Federal Public Service Justice, at the following address: http://www.justice.belgium.be.
As always and given the above responses, I think it will depend somewhat on local rules. If they accept your Belgian and International driving license, you are in good hands. If they have different rules locally, then you are out of luck.
Rudi(BE)
May we hope that once you have the driver's license, we get a follow-up to your question.
Others, especially those with a Belgian driving licence, will benefit from it in the future.
Ronnie,
decided to go Monday or Tuesday and first try WITHOUT translation; Hear what they say and maybe I'll be lucky...... If not I'll try with that translation from the Embassy. Keep you informed
I would also try that first.
In the other case you can still go to the embassy.
Years ago I asked if I could get an English translation from the minister/state secretary
Schoupe, his answer was that Thais in Belgium could simply exchange their driving license and that it should therefore also be done in Thailand. He was well informed about the state of affairs here..
Yes, and what Schoupe thinks will make the Thai lie awake.
Otherwise, Schoupe could find his feet in Thai politics…
