Dear readers,

We are going to Hua Hin in October 2019 for 15 days, but first we are going to Chiang Mai for 5 days. What is the best way to get from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin? Does it always have to go through Bangkok or is there a better option?

Regards,

Brenda

There is only 1 direct option and it depends on your attitude whether you think that is also the "best" - that is the direct night bus, which depends on BKK. of the number of pax, whether or not to leave aside.
For overland - first read that travel guide! - there is the choice between ditto bus or train with change in BKK - trains are often hours late on arrival and therefore take much longer. For 2 buses you only see that gigantic Mochit bussttaion.
Or fly to Swampy and take the direct bus from there-wrs. the shortest option.

This year we flew with viejet directly to Bangkok (survarnabhumi) and then the VIP bus to Hua Hin. Was the fastest option and also one of the cheaper ones.

Flying from Chiang Mai to Bangkok Don Muang is cheap and in Bangkok you can take the bus from Southern Bus Terminal to Hua Hin. Tickets for flying start from 60 euros. NokAir services from Don Muang airport three times a week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) a scheduled service between Bangkok and Hua Hin. The flight is done in a 34-seater Saab 340B turboprop and the flight time is approximately 30 minutes. Tickets for the Bangkok – Hua Hin transport are offered from around 1300 Baht.

Below you will find a link for the bus from Chiang Mai to Hua Hin, while alternatively there are also flights that take you to Hua Hin via Bangkok by bus or taxi.

The fastest and most comfortable solution is a flight to Suvernabhumi from where luxury buses run every hour to Hua Hin.

Sombat tours has two buses daily in the morning and evening from Chiangmai to Huahin and vice versa.
My stepdaughter sometimes travels with this good and reliable company with good equipment, usually Scania buses, she lives in Nakhon Pathong stopover and so gets home quickly.
Of course it takes longer than by plane, but the journey is just as enjoyable, the bus has various classes.

An advantage of the direct bus is no need to drag luggage or pay extra for extra weight or large items as with discount airlines in the air.
Not having to hang around airports.
Traveling during the day you also see something of Thailand.
Traveling at night saves you another hotel night.
You get a free snack and a drink on the bus.
And you get to know other people during the trip.
But if you are in a hurry or on a stressful holiday, it is better to take the plane.

If you rent a car before and during the holiday and have subvarnabhumi as arrival and also as departure by car.
    Can be done well.
    Just use google's route planner.

Otherwise I would take the VIP night bus. Flying the whole piece is not possible. Coach yes.
Cost I believed a 785 bath per person.
VIP buses have 3 airplane seats in width. Usually 1 left and 2 right.
With internet and entertainment. Also something from a packed lunch and drinks on board.
See previous link or the next one.

Last year I drove directly from Kanchanaburi with a super deluxe VIP bus to Chiang Mai and I think that is the cheapest and probably the fastest way to travel. A few days later back in the same way and from Kanchanaburi there are regular buses to Hua HIn which is 220km further south.
If you fly to Suvanabuhmi you also have to take a bus and that is a lot further and therefore a detour that also takes a lot of time.
Just give me the bus and moreover you save a hotel because you can sleep on the bus!!!
