Dear readers,

With us the tension is rising….. next Monday we fly from Frankfurt to Bangkok for a tour of 11 days and then to Hua Hin for much needed relaxation after the tiring tour.

But our question is the following. Given the current fluctuations in the currency market, what is the best thing to do:

1) Withdraw money with the credit card in Thailand (which bank currently offers the best rate?).
2) Withdraw money with the normal bank card (by the way Austrian only because we are “expats”…;-)
3) Exchange cash (in the highest possible denominations and preferably new) at an exchange office or bank and then which bank is the best choice….

Here in Austria you currently get relatively little baht for a lot of euros and 300 € costs 9 €.

We look forward to your reactions…just like Thailand…. #canniewaiting 😉

Thanks!

Anton

Bringing cash is the best way to get it

      Indeed,

See also the most recent exchange rate blog from a few weeks ago (this question comes up every few months, simply search for "exchange" or "exchange rate" with the search function here on the blog):

      https://www.thailandblog.nl/lezersvraag/euros-wisselen-bangkok/

Well-known exchange offices in Bangkok are Superrich, Grand Superrich, Super Rich 1965 (these are 3 different companies), Linda Exchange, SIA Exchange, Vasu Exchange, etc.

Find an office in your area via, for example:

To exchange cash, here are a few websites that allow you to make some comparisons between the different banks/exchange offices.
Check whether it is on the right day and the correct currency Euro/Bath (unless you had other currencies with you).

Hi Ronnie, great!!! Thanks for your info we can do something with that…..I'll transfer the link to my phone because I don't think there's an App available….or is it?

      • RonnyLatPhrao says up

Not sure if there's an app for it. Veeknplexier and enjoy your stay.

    I do cash these days
    recording nowadays costs 200bath
the euro exchange rate bath is at the banks here when using pass or exchange 1 to 1.5 difference on the euro with regard to the exchange rate of european / world banks

I myself use large notes and change at superrich, there is one at Bangkok airport on the first floor, I believe, but can be checked and no exchange costs.

in the end you have to decide for yourself

At the airport there is a 'Supperich' exchange office, at the very bottom left of the entrance to the metro.

Take large notes with you, they give more baht for that!

      Success!

It is my understanding from previous discussions that there are several Super Rich. They have different colors but they change money. The one on Suvarnabhumi is a bit hidden. On Youtube you can see a video of Rhythms Journey with the title: Bangkok suvarnabhumi, Money Exchange, Taxi service around minute 1,40. Video was made when the price was very low. If you are unfamiliar with a country, you can preview things on Youtube. In another video, she and many others show how you can travel to the city with the Airportlink. Or how does the taxi thing work at the airport? Do you want internet on your phone? that can be arranged for a few days/weeks. When I'm seen on youtube do it when I'm there. I'm at new airports for work and then cheating is quite useful if you want to get to your hotel quickly. I choose to exchange in Thailand because I need relatively little money in Thailand. Debit cards also have advantages if you are afraid that your money will be stolen. Everyone has to make his/her own choices. In Hua Hin last year the exchange rate at a small booth near the Burger King was the best I could find. Near the Hilton, exchanges were less favorable. There will certainly be a better one somewhere, but in the end it won't cost you so much with smaller amounts. A nice feeling.

    Dear Anthony,

the best result is achieved by exchanging cash.
but the question is whether you have the opportunity to do so.

    regards Jack

  5. eugene says up

Exchanging cash in a good exchange office (not in a bank) always yields the most money.
My experience (but it is not always correct) is that the price is highest on Fridays.

  6. Karel says up

A good advice! Do not exchange euros in the airport other than what you need for a taxi or bus. And then it is best to pin with your bank card. During your stay, check in an official bank what the exchange rate is. No offices on the street. Best in Bangkok Bank!Have a nice trip!

    • Ingrid says up

Why not in the small offices on the street? Our experience is that the rates at these smaller exchange offices are better than the rates of the bank exchange offices.

    • Cornelis says up

A good course can also be obtained on Suvarnabumi, but then you have to go to the basement, at the entrance of the rail connection to the city. Saved 2,5 baht per euro compared to the exchangers a few floors higher.

      • phan says up

This message is no longer correct. In previous years, the price of K.bank at the entrance of the metro/train (just outside the airport) was a lot better than at the airport itself. So last April I went there on autopilot to change money, but then I saw that the exchange rate there had been made the same as all bank branches at the airport. Checked again last September: the same rate everywhere.

        • Cornelis says up

Phan, my message is correct: I experienced it myself on Monday, November 2nd, I exchanged a large amount there (but not at the bank you mention).

    • eugene says up

In Pattaya, the small offices give better rates than the banks.

    • Peter VanLint says up

I'm sorry Karel, but what you said is sheer nonsense. Only that you don't have to exchange at the airport is correct. The use of a bank card always entails costs and it is best to exchange cash at offices on the street. They always give a better rate than the bank branches.

    • Ruud tam ruad says up

I have been changing my Euros for my first baths at the airport with cash for 15 years !!!! . Most times I have almost always had the best rate at the airport for many years.
I also change cash a number of times, but if you stay longer it is difficult to take a suitcase with you in cash (at least I don't. Lost is lost nl)
I'd rather pay 200 bath change than lose everything.
Offices on the street can be trusted and are usually on the right track. Not a bad idea at all.

I think Karel was on holiday in Europe a lot. Karel said GOOD advice. I would almost say ( No Karel no Karel not today, no Karel no Karel even if you want so much ………..)

You should always look around you when changing to be sure. You have to here in Holland too.

    • kjay says up

Karel, I also thought about the airport…..Let it be that since 3 years I know for sure that I got the most for my Euro there! So would certainly inform and one gives better rate than the other ...

  7. jani careni says up

today at Kasikorn 37.93 for cash, in Bangkok at SuperRich (Ratchadami) 38,25 for 500 euro notes, at Vasu exchange too, expectations are certainly not favorable for the euro at the moment, with inflation in Europe and with the drama in Paris, for no major change in the near future; between 37 and 38,5 and certainly not at the airport, exchange rate is always lower, have a nice holiday and currently in Hua Hin between 30 ° and 33 ° and at night 26 ° and beautiful blue heaven

  8. Fransamsterdam says up

You are allowed to bring 10.000 euros per person in cash without having to declare it to customs.
    Distribute fairly, of course.
Exchange at non-banks is the cheapest. In general, I think you have a good rate if you don't admit more 0.30 Baht on the middle rate.
So if for example the mid price is 38.15 and you get 37.85 that is acceptable.
    On 1000 euros you 'lose' 1000 x 0.3 baht = 300 baht (almost 8 euros, less than a percent).
The current exchange rate can be found here:.
    .
    http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=EUR&to=THB&view=1D
    .
When using a bank card, you quickly lose 6 to 7 percent.
    .
It obviously makes no sense to undertake entire journeys to get 0.1 baht more per euro.
In Pattaya I can recommend the yellow offices of TT Exchange, they usually give the best rate.
Occasionally it may be that another office is just cheaper due to a decline that has not yet been processed. There's no point in speculating on that.
Large denominations only yield a fraction more at a number of banks/offices. The difference is usually less than the daily fluctuation.

    • david h. says up

Small mistake but .... FROM 10000 euros you have to declare on departure .... 9999 euros not yet, not ... that is the correct description

      • david h. says up

Hereby the customs link with clear description

        http://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontentnl/belastingdienst/prive/douane/geld_over_de_grens_meenemen/

      • Rob says up

Having to is compelled… even without reporting it is fine to take more than 10.000 euros in cash with you. Have done that myself 2 times now and never checked or anything...

      • self says up

The correct text is as follows: “Are you taking €10.000 or more with you when you enter or leave the European Union? Then you have to make a declaration to Customs. It does not matter whether you bring money or other securities (liquid assets). It is notification duty. You don't have to pay taxes.” This means that 20 x 500 euro notes are taken in or out per person, being 10 thousand euros. So nothing 9999 euros. Keep in mind that, in addition to 10 euros, small change in your wallet or pocket is not allowed across the border. Then you are at 10 thousand and more. That's not allowed!!

My Tip: So order from your bank 2 weeks before you go cash money and set of notes of, for example, 200 or 500 euros, then keep an eye on exchange rate fluctuations in Thailand via the internet and not a bank in Thailand, but do some shopping at the exchange offices which give the best rate and exchange there.
For example, to have Thai Bath at the airport, you first need to change a small amount.

    • kjay says up

Dear Epie: My tip. Do not bring large Euro bills. Rode? The Euro is still ticking and sometimes it rises again only to fall again the next day. This will remain so for a while, unfortunately! So if the exchange rate is bad or rather very bad I am obliged to suddenly exchange 500 Euro at a very low exchange rate! Better change what is needed that day and look at it further.

  10. psm says up

    Best is to bring euros.

You can usually find the best rate at a Super Rich office.

Contrary to what Karel says here, you also get the better rate in the small offices and in all our holidays we have never received counterfeit money.

Banks are an expensive business. Keep in mind that you have your passport with you, because you sometimes have to hand it over. Ask about the copy they make and draw two lines through the copy so that no one can misuse it.

Enjoy your holiday, we are doing the same now in Northern Thailand.

    • Fransamsterdam says up

They also like a copy of a copy. Can you leave your passport where it is.

  11. rob says up

http://www.superrich1965.com always gives the best rate in my opinion. have to say that because I come from Bangladesh we only exchange Dollars. I come to Thailand about 3-4 times a year and it remains the most favorable exchange rate for us for years.
Furthermore, when we use the ATM we always choose the option "use local exchange rate", you will see on the statement that this is always the most favorable. Know that in many places, outside the larger cities, even though it is indicated, you cannot always use your foreign pass. For example, I saw in Kanchanaburi that many people had lost their card, while the correct logos were clearly displayed on the ATM. Good trip

  12. tonymarony says up

Anton just the following if you take money from the ATM machine here you pay 200 Baht here and still at your bank in the Netherlands abn 2.50 euros per transaction so just take money from the bank in the Netherlands and don't change too much here at the small offices and not too little at a time that's the best my idea for the rest it's looking at coffee grounds with that baht but you get a lot of fun in return here nice weather and ???? up to you we say here, greetings and a nice holiday

  13. Anton says up

Thank you very much for all the answers….we can really do something with that!! We look forward to Thailand, nature, culture, flora and fauna, temples, the Thai, the food… in short, everything that is possible and feasible…..
We will post after returning home how our experiences were and perhaps with images….See you in Thailand!!

  14. Sir Charles says up

Always take cash with you and exchange it at an office where the most favorable rate is available and then deposit it into my Kasikorn account and then debit with a card obtained from them.
To be honest, I don't know if they are still flexible enough to open an account for farang, opened about 10 years ago it was no problem at all.

  15. Jan says up

Yesterday in Bangkok Central Plaza Grand exchanged new 100 Euro banknotes at Kasokornbank; exchange rate was 38,0157900
