Reader question: Where can I buy a ghost house?
Dear readers,
Everyone knows them, you can't miss them throughout Thailand, the so-called Spirithouses. Every house, hotel, hospital, school, you name it, has one in front of its door.
Now I think that is a decorative gadget and would like to have one at home in Belgium (a small one of course) and preferably entirely in natural wood. However, I have no idea where you can buy something like that? Even Thai I asked shrugged their shoulders.
Can someone help me further? Near Hua Hin.
Thank you
Regards,
Ron
“Shops Selling Spirit Houses can be found on main road heading from Cha Am to Hua Hin. Wooden Spirit Houses can be found on road heading out of Cha Am towards Petchaburi after the overhead merging to the Bangkok Highway (on the left).”

Here you can also read that you don't just buy such a spirit house, you have to take into account your date of birth when choosing it, it must be placed in a place where it is not in the shadow of the house, and the like.
Dear Frans, I think that Ron is mainly concerned with an address in Belgium or at least in the vicinity.
Furthermore, as most Farangs would do, it will be about the decoration at most. With all due respect to a Thai who certainly sees otherwise, I hardly believe that a Farang would bother with the fuss of date of birth or shadow place, let alone believe in a distant house ghost. At our house in Chiangrai, the Spirit House is in the bright sunshine, and I have not experienced any adverse effects so far. You are certainly right if Ron were Thai, and his name was Somchai instead of his name, that he would follow your advice. As far as I can judge his superstitions from a distance, he certainly won't come to Cha-Am extra for a spirit house, unless he's really already deserted of all good spirits by now. 5555 .
Dear John Chiang,
If Ron were to address an address in Belgium, is it obvious that he would ask Thai? I do not think so.
And then the addition 'Near Hua Hin' would also be rather nonsensical.
The fact that the house is in the sun is fine, the house and your home should not be in each other's shadow.
To what extent someone wants to be influenced by these 'rules' is, of course, up to him or herself, but it can be useful to have seen those rules before purchasing, and not to find out too late.
Sorry Frans, I may have had a little mental confusion, so I didn't see the last line, where Ron asks for someone in Hua Hin. Will check at my house in Chiangrai, whether our spirit house occasionally comes in the shadow of the house. Don't be angry, my first reaction was also meant to be a bit of a joke. Gr John.
Very witty.
If you look around a bit you will really find a place where they sell these, I bought another one in October for my in-laws who went crazy with joy, the thing was also placed by a clergyman with the necessary ceremony.
By the way, as far as I know these things are all made of concrete, so very heavy.
Ron has probably also looked around in various places, and has not seen a place where they sell those things. Hence his question, I think.
And are you sure you bought a concrete ghost house for the in-laws? Did it have to be driven?
They also exist of stone, never thought about it, it all looks like wood carving.
In that case you can also place it outside in Belgium, I think, but then I would also buy it there. Gets a bit costly by plane I'm afraid…

Hi Ron
I myself bought one at Chatuchak weekend market, it is true that it is not Hua Hin, but there you have them in different sizes, made of teak wood, only you have to pack it well and hand it over as fragile luggage, because on the airport is handled roughly, certain ornaments want to break quickly,
Khun John, Dok Mai
We bought a spirit house about 10 years ago and had it shipped to NL and it is now in the garden. The NL climate with our rains and cold winters is unfortunately not really suitable for the spirithouse.
We then approached a Thai at the weekend market in BKK and he took us to a spirit house shop nearby. The price is fine because even our Thai dentist couldn't get them cheaper. “So Cheap” he said.
If you would like more information, don't hesitate.
Yours faithfully,
Pieter
On the main road between Hua Hin and Cha Am there are several traders who sell "ghost houses".
from small to very large and in all colours, even in wood.

Dear Ron, look at this online site where, among other things, these spirit houses that you requested are offered. https://www.lotusoosterseartikelen.nl/c-516367/thai-geestenhuis-spirithouse/
Perhaps they are already sold in various garden centers (Netherlands, Belgium) such as the "boom" of Buddhas, garden gnomes, etc.
sabaidee shop in Eindhoven, have a website and even an online store
