Dear Thailand blog readers,

I wonder if readers have experience with or are familiar with state hospitals or private hospitals or clinics that have eye specialists, preferably in the Rayong area, the latter being less important.

Which treatments have been undergone, where, costs, results, patient friendliness, etc?

Thanks in advance for your responses,

Nico B

My experience concerns laser eye surgery. Great experience in Bumrungrat, Bangkok. Bad experience in Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. Higher costs and the doctor wanted to laser both eyes, which according to the doctor in Bumrungrat was completely unnecessary. Laser eye surgery cost 11,000 baht in Bumrungrat. BPH wanted 30,000 baht for both eyes. I have also heard multiple complaints about ophthalmologists in BPH. This experience is from 5 years ago.

Nico, I myself have always had bad eyesight since I was a little boy, so I wore glasses. With age, the eyes have deteriorated and at the end I had + 3 and + 2,5, so without glasses I could not read or drive a car.
For years I struggled with reading glasses and glasses for distance, so out of laziness I started buying those cheap glasses of a few euros, which is not really conducive to the eyes.
About 4 years ago I saw my old landlord here in Thailand and he is around 75, what struck me was that he no longer wore (thick) glasses and after a chat I found out that he had a cataract operation done in Bangkok Pattaya hospital and everything was paid by the insurance.
A week later I went there for information and was perfectly helped and informed, the eyes were examined with very modern equipment and within 10 minutes the doctor told me that I had a very mild form of cataract (in Dutch we call it gray stare if I'm not mistaken) It could be fixed and informed the insurance with a note from the doctor. Insurance reimbursed me 75%!
After a few days I had the first operation done on my worst eye which was given local anesthesia during the operation. An hour after the operation I could read WITHOUT glasses and even small print.
From that day on I never touched glasses again! A few days later I had my other eye done without any problems or pain. And for me a world has really opened up and I am super happy with the result. If I had known this sooner, it would have happened years ago.
Now after four years still perfect and no problem with reading or driving a car. The only drawback is that the eyes are slightly more sensitive to daylight (sun) so I grab sunglasses earlier than before.
Cost per eye then around 100.000 Thai Bath. Perfect and very professionally helped very friendly people.
Heaven really opened up for me and no regrets for a second and only very positive about my "view" of the world now ;-)))
    Regards, Antony

      Hello Antony,

I wanted to ask what your age is, since I also wanted to laser, she told me that was not possible above 50 years

      regards computing

      • ruud says up

It is likely that no laser was applied, but the lens of the eye was replaced.
Lasering does not help against the clouding of the lens of the eye.

I had my eyes lasered at the age of 60, no problem at all. Have it done in Rotterdam at eye vision. In Chiangmai, where I live most of the year, there were no possibilities for this according to the RAM hospital. Costs in Rotterdam were 1000 euros per eye. No more glasses and extremely satisfied.

Antony, thank you for your extensive response, cataract is indeed cataract.
You talk about the operations, just to be clear, cataract is usually operated on with a new lens placed, did that also happen to you?
Did you have the standard lenses installed or specific ones? (among other things that give better visibility in depth differences.)
Ask again, do your eyes still accommodate well cq. can you see depth differences well?
Read here and there that this no longer functions after inserting lenses, which could make driving a problem? You don't mind that, I understand.
Looking forward to hearing from you, thanks in advance.

Please follow the reactions; after all, with a cataract, both eye lenses are replaced. One eye first, until that operation proved successful, usually after a week to 14 days, if no complications, then the other eye. After the treatment, a new world opens up for most people because the diopter (myopia and/or presbyopia; nearsightedness or farsightedness) is also taken into account. Since most of the patients with cataracts are elderly, and they have acquired new eye lenses, wearing (suitable) sunglasses is recommended. With or without any provisional adjustments of the glasses in connection with myo/presbyopia. Have these operations performed by internationally recognized hospitals. By the way, at the same time as fitting new eye lenses, in some countries a pass is added. They would be recyclable, which is not really my opinion on the matter. Well, prostheses are also recyclable; means either reusable or disintegrated and to deliver a new product provided a new mold is used.

The Rutnin eye hospital on Asok is a worldwide concept and has the most modern techniques. I went there myself on the advice of a Thai doctor friend and I was treated there. Make an appointment and experience for yourself how professional and knowledgeable they are. Do not hesitate to consult several hospitals if you are in doubt. It's your eyes; make sure you let the best do it. Good luck

After months of being treated by an ophthalmologist in a large hospital in Chiang Mai and my complaints were still present, I went to the Rutnin eye hospital.
Ten days later everything is ok again!

      • Nico B says up

        Hello Peter,
Would you like some more information, what were your complaints and the diagnosis? what did the ophthalmologist give for treatment? what were the costs? how long has this been? Glad your symptoms cleared up so quickly.
        Thanks in advance.

Here my experience with eye disease in Thailand:
A few years ago I woke up one morning (in Hanoi) and couldn't open my eyes because they were swollen.
That same day I had to fly to Bangkok so I went to a hospital there.
I was seriously worried if this was going to work out.
My feet had barely crossed the threshold when the specialist called out:
I already see it; Taa Deng! (Red eyes).
Sit down and you won't get my hand because this is very contagious; will not touch anyone for the next few days. You will be given eye drops and I will see you in 3 days.
I thought yes, yes… it must be.
But….when I came back 3 days later the whole problem was solved; within a day the swelling was reduced by half.
    That's what I call craftsmanship.
From then on I have been a fan of the Bumrungrad Hospital

I also went to Rutnin eye hospital, where I was prescribed eye drops against cataracts and they still work well after 3 years. Rutnin can be considered the best ophthalmologist and he was also recommended to me by my ophthalmologist in Belgium.

    • Nico B says up

      Dear Heavenly Roger,
Please provide some additional information. The eye drops you use, what is the brand? What is the active substance? What are the costs of that? Do you use it daily and do you have to keep using it for life? Is it true that your ophthalmologist did not, yet, consider it necessary to give a lens change, which often happens with cataracts? Do I understand correctly that you were helped by Dr. Rutnin himself at the Rutnin Eye Hospital? I am very curious about this information. Thank you in advance.
      Nico B

      • Good heavens Roger says up

Dear NicoB, the brand of the eye drops is CATALIN. I don't know the active substance by heart, I would have to consult the package leaflet for that, but the problem is that I now throw away the packaging together with the used up eye drops because I no longer need them and I have spare bottles with a package leaflet. I am not at the moment. The price is 150 – 180 THB each. CATALIN does not stop cataracts, it only slows them down and Dr Rutnin was in favor of operating, but there is a problem: I have already had 5 operations on my left eye for retinal detachment and there is already an artificial lens in that eye . That's why I don't dare to risk cataract surgery on that eye in Thailand. I prefer to leave that to the Belgian doctor who operated on me before. He fully knows the medical history of that eye, which is not known here in Thailand and it may well be that it is not done well here, even though Rutnin is the best surgeon in the country. I don't want to risk losing my sight afterwards. The right eye is no problem now, but I prefer to have it done in Belgium. When I still lived in Belgium, that ophthalmologist came to Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia every year (perhaps still?) to treat people here and also to operate on the eyes. So I have full confidence in that doctor. His name: Van Laetem and is from Ghent, Rutnin has heard of that man but has never met him. Indeed, I went for a consultation with Rutnin himself, who prescribed CATALIN for me and I use those eye drops 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening, but may be used 4 times a day for 1 month and thus until I have a cataract operation performed. I also use a capsule of fish oil every day to keep my eyes in the best possible condition, which also helps. I also use carrot juice regularly, it contains carotene and is also good for the eyes.
Another thing: CATALIN is produced by Senji Pharmaceutical co Ltd. Hyogo-ken, Japan and imported by Takeda (Thailand) Ltd., Bangkok.

Good heavens Roger, I am very grateful for the very extensive personal response, it clarifies a lot and now I understand your situation.
One more question about the use of the drops, which is not entirely clear to me yet, you can use the eye drops for 1 month, then again after a while? Do they help slow down the process of deterioration and how long have you been using them? With the answers to that I can get well prepared at the ophthalmologist. Thank you in advance.
I wish you the best of luck in your further treatment.
          Nico B

          • Good heavens Roger says up

Dear NicoB, the eye drops must be replaced every month with a new bottle of eye drops, so following the month that has expired. That is the reason that after 1 month of use, the eye drops are no longer effective enough. I've been using them for almost 5 years (previously I wrote 3 years, but all in all it's already become 5) and I have to say, my sight hasn't deteriorated that much in that time. Of course it doesn't get worse from one month to the next, that's a slow process of deterioration. Where I could be without glasses for a few years, I now have to use one for farsightedness and also for reading and writing. I don't need one for medium distance yet. Of course my age also plays a role in this, after all I am now 72 years old and my vision does not improve with age, does it?
            Regards, Roger.

            • Nico B says up

Dear Roger, thank you for this additional information, it makes it very clear to me what to expect, so I am better prepared for the ophthalmologist.
I hope for more responses, but I would like to thank all other responders for their responses.

Yesterday I was also diagnosed with cataracts
How much did you pay and in which hospital?

      • Nico B says up

Dear luc.cc, just a few counter questions, what was the reason you went to the ophthalmologist? Which hospital did you go to? Which doctor did you consult? How did you end up with that doctor, first made an appointment? Which procedures were followed to diagnose the cataract in you, I would like to hear about all the research that has been done. What is the suggested treatment? What is the price they ask you for what they want to do? Please everything as comprehensive as possible, for me and the other readers, many thanks in advance for that information.
        Nico B

Nico, I went to a local Chinese ophthalmologist here, who did a test on my eyes, my left eye has deteriorated 1 percent in 50 year, no cloudy vision, but he said cataract and recommended two hospitals in Bkk, namely Rutnin and Public Hospital Eyecare,
          Both charge 40.000 per eye
Local International Hospital, Ayutthaya 45.000 baht
          I'll get a second diagnosis

          • Nico B says up

Luc cc, thanks for your explanations, one more question, what kind of test/examinations did the Chinese ophthalmologist do to diagnose cataract? What did the Chinese ophthalmologist charge for this?
            Thanks in advance,
            Nico B

            • luc.cc says up

Only been in for 10 minutes looked at both my eyes a test to read and decided cataract cost 100 baht
But I'm going to get a second diagnosis

Dear compatriots and southern neighbors, I read your reactions about the question for the best hospital for eye treatment, now I read that at Antony about 100.000 bath and at Kees 11.000 bath lasering per eye and the other says I only got drops from the rest of the I don't read much what the real costs are, because I go to the insurance company with a note that I no longer have in the Netherlands, because I live here and have been deregistered in the Netherlands, I would like some more direct information, hereby my heartfelt thanks .

My husband was lasered about 4 years ago in Bangkok Bumrungrad by Dr. chat.
This was a very calm doctor, with experience from the USA. everything was then very efficient and well executed.
Still no problems after 4 years

@ everyone, I just got a quote from Rutnin eye clinic for new lenses, cataract, and these are asking 65.000 bth per eye.

Hans, thank you for responding, your response is very valuable. 2 questions Hans, you are satisfied with the treatment you are now receiving in a state hospital, which state hospital is that? long waiting times ….. what to expect? Thanks in advance for your answers.

new quote received today, Petchabun hospital, also 45.000 per eye, international hospital

@ Hans, I would like to know where you had it done and what it cost you in total.
I also live in Thailand myself and because I have too many defects I will no longer be insured.
As you write, you left rutnin, but that was not after 1 eye, or you did the aftercare elsewhere.
Going to the Netherlands makes no sense to me because I have nothing left there and if you have to rent everything and use public transport, I will spend more than going to BKK and paying a little more.
Siriray and Rama Tibodi hospital also operate these or is this only after treatment?
I received a message from BKK Pattaya Hospital yesterday, 100.000 for 1 eye.
Today message from the TRSC clinic, they had 4 different options from 50.000 to 100.000 baht.
Thanks in advance for the information so far and hope, if there is more info it will be reported on this blog or to me privately [email protected]
