Reader Question: First time to Phuket
Dear readers,
We are going to Phuket on Tuesday 28 July. Where is the best place to exchange money and what should I be aware of if I want to take a taxi from the airport to my hotel (5 people)?
Where can we best book excursions? And possibly a flight to Bangkok?
I hope someone can give me tips, it's the first time for us.
Yours faithfully,
Diana
If you walk from the baggage hall towards the exit, you will immediately come across a desk where you can be taken to your hotel by minibus for 180b pp (April 2014). Taxis are around 800b to patong/karon/kata.
On every corner of every (main) street in the famous places you have tour book and money exchange offices. Nowadays you can bring 20000b pp in cash.
You can fly to bkk with air asia, bkk airway and thai airway return from phuket.
Daniel,
I don't know if I understand you correctly, but why shouldn't you be allowed to bring more than 20 Baht in cash?
I guess you mean 20 000 USD.
http://www.customs.go.th/wps/wcm/connect/custen/travellers/arriving+in+thailand/arrivinginthailand
Also not. The maximum that you can take with you per person, without registration of course, is € 9.999,99
Exchanging with large denominations is best € 500 after negotiating and trying at several exchange offices. Don't use a couch. This one gives much less.
Have fun there.
The amount of money you are allowed to take with you from Europe only counts for Europe and that is indeed 9999 Euro. She can bring that with her from Europe.
In Thailand, you can import up to USD 20 or equivalent.
Suppose someone leaves Europe, makes a stopover in one of the tax havens and somewhere supplements his 9999 Euro to 20 000 USD, that is all right.
I know that my example may sound a bit exaggerated, but I just want to make it clear that it is nothing because you export 9999,99 Euro from the Netherlands, that you should not be allowed to import more than that amount into Thailand.
The amounts of the European Union and those of Thailand are independent of each other.
I would not choose the 180 baht bus. They first take you to their office, make you wait quite a long time after a probably tiring journey and then take you to your hotel.
The taxi at around 800 baht is reasonable; I myself always pay around 650 to 700 baht, but I reserve that in advance.
You are always welcome for more information about Phuket.
Have a nice holiday.
Diana, I would say have your hotel pick you up. It will be more expensive but no misery after a long journey. The hotel can also easily book a trip to Bangkok. Usually they are very willing and it costs nothing. You can exchange money at any bank or simply withdraw money at an ATM. Just can at the airport and you immediately have Thai bath. Excursions just walk around the street and you will find many. Or else just ask a taxi driver, they all have someone in the family who can arrange it. Nice holiday.
Don't forget to upgrade your pass for world coverage 😉
Diana, if you want to use the ATM, don't forget to make your bank card suitable for non-European countries. This can be done via your own bank or via internet banking. It happened to me last year and it takes a week for the ATM to accept your bank card. A very good holiday
Hi Diana,
we went last November. We have discussed a taxi to Kata in advance. Cash at the ATM at the airport. The advantage is that they are waiting with a sign with your name on it and you can leave right away. No need to negotiate and you will quickly reach your destination. It's nice after a long flight. Have fun on Phuket
Hi Diana
You say you come with 5 people.
It is better to take a taxi +\- 700 bath, do not take the minivan for 180 bath pp (5 pers is 900 bath)
Because you take it to a clothes shop and let you wait there to smear junk on clothes, travel ashtrays, etc.
Just walk outside you can take a taximeter on the right there.
But you are with 5 people can also speak to a minivan outside and say that you want to go straight to your hotel, and agree on a price.
And I always change money myself at a small bangla street office.
You can see for yourself because there are enough exchange offices, it is a 5-minute walk and it may be worth it depending on what you change.
Have fun in Phuket.
Gr rob
@namesakeLatphrao : I actually saw a sign at Phuket International Arrivals with the text “more than € 10.000, declare” it hangs at customs on the baggage scan for incoming travelers.
@ Diana, 5 people plus luggage don't fit in a 700 baht taxi, so you have to rely on a minivan. Exchange money everywhere on the street, just search for the best exchange rate, someone recommends an office at Bangla Road, but do not know if you are in Patong because that is where this street is located. Excursion also everywhere on the street, pay about half the price in the brochure, especially now because it is very quiet on Phuket.
You can already book a flight to Bangkok at home via the internet, if you do this at a travel agency on Phuket and pay with CC, an extra 3% is charged. If you book Thai Smile or Bangkok Air, you can have your luggage labeled to A.dam on Phuket.
Have a nice vacation, Ron.
Dear Ron,
Bringing cash is allowed up to an amount of 20.000 US Dollar, everything above that must be declared. When using a possible EC Card, you must ensure that you arrange for a Limit increase at the house bank in the Netherlands before departure. Due to the increasing fraud, many banks have a security Limit, so that it can happen that you suddenly run out of money.
Ron,
Are you sure this concerns the import of €10 in cash and not confused with €000 in personal property?

Exemptions of Customs duties for passengers' belongings
– Personal effects must be in an appropriate amount for personal use with the total aggregate value not exceeding 10,000 Baht (not prohibited/controlled items or supplies)
– Items for personal or professional use which are bought from Duty Free shops at an airport with the total amount of taxes not exceeding 20,000 Baht
– Household effects which are brought into the country by a traveler due to residential movement from another country must be purchased from Duty Free shops at an airport and the total amount of taxes must not exceed 50,000 Baht
– No more than 200 cigarettes or tobacco not exceeding 250 grams, or the total weight of both types not exceeding 250 grams. If the amount exceeds the allowance, please contact the Customs officers at the Red Channel
– No more than 1 liter of wine or spirits
Anyway, if you say that you have seen it hanging in Phuket, I will not claim that this is not the case.
The last thing I will ever say is that something is not possible in Thailand.
I have never noticed it in Bangkok myself. Maybe I missed it.
Of course, we all know that rules can suddenly arise when the responsible person wakes up. Whether those rules are in accordance with the official laws is a side issue for them, as long as they show who is in charge.
Perhaps he once went to Europe and read something about it and thought that this could also be applied in “his” airport on Phuket.
The foreign exchange regulations say
http://phuketairportthai.com/en/819-customs-services
Currency declaration upon arrival
There is no limit on the amount of Thai currency which can be brought into Thailand. Foreign currencies, in banknotes or coins, with the total aggregate value exceeding USD 20,000 must be declared to the Customs officers at the Customs checkpoint. Failure to declare or incorrect declaration may result in criminal offense.
I hope it is clear to the readers that we are talking about import/export without mandatory declaration.
You are of course allowed to import/export more (both in Europe and in Thailand), and that is possible without any problems, as long as you indicate it.
