Dear readers,

We want to drive from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son in mid-January. We have experience driving the car in the mountains. So that's no problem. How long should we allocate for this ride?

We want to stay in MHS for 2 nights. Also 1 or 2 nights in Pai. Is there enough to do in Pai? We have already read many experiences of motorcycle trips, but not of ordinary passenger cars.

So please only tips from intended reader group.

Regards,

Nicky

Last Friday we returned from a visit to Pai. The minibus from Chiangmai to Pai takes about three hours, so a passenger car is also something like that. It was driven quietly, many corners but not really steep uphill. A lot has changed since our last visit to Pai four years ago. Many more restaurants and bars, many with live music, and quite busy with mainly backpackers. Four years ago, only a few moped rental companies, now for rent everywhere. A Dutchman told me that it is better not to drive faster than 15 km per hour in the city (village) due to the large number of moped accidents.
We have ridden halfway to MHS on a moped, again with many bends and ups and downs. No problem with two people on a moped, so not at all with a car. A Thai told me that MHS does not have many entertainment options, but mainly government services (provincial capital). But that's just hearsay. I don't know what the weather is like in January, but now it was quite chilly in the village in the evening, and cold up in the mountains during the day.

I have already done that ride a few times, it is easy to do, but it shows that you have enough reflection, few naft stations, Chiang Mai Pai, about 4 hours, known for the hot water springs and trekking
mae hong song known for long necks and trekking beautiful nature

The drive to Pai takes about 3 hours with coffee on the way. Beautiful ride. Pai is a nice little town with a nice night market (18-22 pm) Very diverse. People from mountains sell. Restaurants. Quite a lot for a small town. Daily vegetable market also very nice. With ease 2 days of wandering around and delicious fresh food !!. Then to MHS. Beautiful temple on a mountain and nice lake square in the middle of the village. There are some nice restaurants and cafes aan.Verder not much to do.

A great ride to do by car. I would definitely do it in two stages; it's a shame to have to hurry. Pai is nice enough to stay for 2 nights. Pai Canyon is very worthwhile (go early, then you are the only one) and the night market is touristy, but so are you ;-). On the way to Pai is a great eatery: Moonatic Shack. If you have already made the necessary kilometers from Chiang Mai, you will have to turn left towards Pai at some point. About mile marker 19, a few miles past the Mok Fa waterfall, it's on the right.
On the route from Pai to Mae Hong Son you can turn right to Tham Lot shortly before Soppong. That is about 8 kilometers from the route. A beautiful cave to view.
In Mae Hong Son, Sang Tong Huts is an absolute must. http://sangtonghuts.org/

    Lots of fun.

route Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son via Pai, many hairpin bends and stretches zigzagging upwards in first gear
