Reader question: Bringing gifts to Thailand
Dear readers,
I have a question about bringing gifts to Thailand. Every time I go to my friend in Isaan I take my iPad with me (which never gives a problem), but now I want to bring her a new iPad and a new iPod (as a Christmas present).
Now my question is whether I can just transport it in my to Thailand or do I have to report this somewhere, as I absolutely do not want any problems with any. custom clearing or police authorities? My luggage is transported through the luggage hold (20 kg).
I would like to be informed about this, thanks in advance for possibly. posting my question…..hats for your nice and interesting blog.
Regards,
Coen
I think many of us have never had any checks at thai customs, to be sure
Take the iPad and iPod out of the packaging and put them in your hand luggage, put the manuals neatly on the bottom and no rooster will crow at them. Absolutely do not put it in the suitcase that goes in the luggage compartment, as...
there is quite a lot of throwing and throwing work with the suitcases, Merry Christmas in advance.
Never put it in a suitcase even with TSA locks they open the suitcase in no time. That's the stupidest thing you can do with valuables or medicines in a suitcase. Everything goes through X-Ray so they know what's in it.
Dear Coen,
Why don't you just buy the iPad & iPod in Thailand? I know from experience that these are a lot cheaper there than in the Netherlands. You have no problem with a keyboard layout (not included) on an iPad & iPod and can choose the desired language (probably Thai) when switching it on for the first time.
You also have the advantage that you immediately get the right plug in Thailand (with those 2 flat plates). It is also much easier if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
A good address for Apple products is iStudio ( http://www.istudio.in.th ). These stores are located in all major shopping centers. There is definitely one in Siam Paragon on the 1st or 2nd floor.
Buy in a real apple store or retailer. The copy seems good but it is not and indeed it is a bit cheaper than in the Netherlands. Language is not a problem in the store they would set it up. Let him set it up, you only have to click on the WiFi at home.
Copy of plugs get hot and you can see that it is not real the start of the wire is shorter quickly bought a real one because you don't want any accidents.
Best advice as above. Buy in Thailand at the original Apple store. Always cheaper and easier in terms of warranty etc.
Have never had a check myself, but just buy your iPad, etc. in Thailand,
Is per device about 100 euros cheaper than with us, so why take a risk?
Dear Coen,
Normally it won't be such a problem.
However, during my last trip, the NL customs told me that I could only take one and not two laptops (hand luggage of course).
The previous (many) trips have never been said about this, but have been told that one is for private purposes and the other for work (log in server employer).
I don't know if this also applies to taking multiple IPADs with you.
So they won't bother about it.
Customs in Thailand is more interested in other matters such as tobacco/drugs etc.
IPAD in Thailand is cheaper. Also has Thai character sets. Warranty is country specific. Unless you buy it in the USA with 40% lower official price than in Holland, don't
Just buy here in Thailand from a good reliable shop. They are a bit cheaper here, but the advantage is the guarantee, and most importantly, they install it completely in Thai, with all the programs and apps that your girlfriend wants to use here. Much easier!
I have been traveling to Thailand for 30 years and my luggage has never been checked, nor have all the many friends and acquaintances who come here regularly. But you never know!
Some advice: buy here in Thailand and put the right language and programs on it. Done by a good shop completely free!
If you buy a laptop in Thailand, it will immediately have a qwerty and Thai keyboard.
Never buy in the Netherlands. If a program doesn't work, you get excellent service in Thailand.
Just buy it in Thailand itself, that is better for her and also easier in connection with warranty.
So be wise and just buy it there.
Just a note regarding the warranty. I bought a mini iPad for my girlfriend in Thailand at an apple store. After a few months it broke internally (no broken glass or the like). In Thailand they asked us 10000 bath for a new one. I thought it was a bit exaggerated. I took the iPad with me to Belgium with my proof of purchase and actually received a new mini iPad for free. In any case, you can easily set the Thai language to a copy purchased in Belgium. I assume this is the same for NL. Regards.
I think it is better to buy an I pad and an I pod in Thailand because we do not have a Thai language and also if you buy them in Thailand you can get another 6 percent barrel refund at the airport in Thailand
Regarding VAT refund.
Officially you have to show the purchased goods at the VAT refund office at the airport.
But then you have to officially export the pads and pods from Thailand. And I thought the point was that they stayed in Thailand.
What you say is incorrect! I bought two iPads in the Netherlands, iPad 3 and iPad air, and both have the Thai language.
In Thailand it is indeed cheaper (approximately between 100/150 euros) but in terms of warranty it doesn't matter because…..buying an Apple device anywhere, the warranty is still worldwide.
And as for the Thai language, it is standard everywhere, even if you were to buy the apps in Africa, for example. are pre-installed the same everywhere.
Be very careful if you do buy in Thailand .. then best only in Apple store because somewhere else it is too dangerous to get a copy device.
All the best and good luck Coen..!
Buy in Thailand if the ipad and ipod remain in Thailand, as far as the warranty is concerned, it is not worldwide as many people think, because they put different motherboards in it, I experienced that myself with an ipad bought in Thailand and went for warranty The Netherlands, but that didn't happen, so I just took that thing back to Thailand and then I did get my guarantee.
That also means that if you take them to Thailand and bought them in the Netherlands, you will always have problems there with regard to warranty.
good luck, Ben Korat
Thank you all very much, but I have already bought the gifts and installed Thai incl. Created accounts for her Facebook, mail account…..she can get started right away.
My question was only whether I could expect something in Thailand because of imports, but I will put the gifts in a backpack because of damage, thanks to all (also the editors)…. and happy holidays to all.
Regards, Coen L.
