Home » Reader question » Reader question: Domestic flight in high season, book in advance or not?
Dear readers,
I am going to Thailand with my daughter from 22/12 to 07/01. We would like to use some domestic flights, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and to Krabi.
Last time (a few years ago) I arranged the domestic flights on arrival in Bangkok (was in March), this was no problem at all. Since I'm coming in high season now, I wonder if I should book my flights in advance?
Regards,
Inge
Inge I would do it myself since the ticket prices are often cheaper and you know for sure that there is room.
Do, tickets are dirt cheap well in advance, especially AirAsia. Keep in mind that the low cost airlines fly to Don Meuang Airport and NOT to Suvarnabhumi, where you arrive. There is a free shuttle between both airports, which takes an hour, so take transfer times into account.
What is wrong with not booking the necessary domestic flights online before then. You cannot compare the period from 22/12 to 7/1 with the month of March. I myself book all domestic flights on the Thaismille site, and have never had any problems with these bookings. Thaismile is a daughter of Thaiairways with a good service, so that a suitcase weighing up to 20 kg is included in the price. There is also the possibility that the seat can be reserved free of charge during the online booking.
There are of course also other companies, with which the limit of the suitcase is usually 15 kg, so that you have to pay extra if you are overweight, and it is also usually not possible to reserve a specific seat. It's all up to you of course, only December and January is peak season so many flights sell out quickly so this can put your short delay in time planning quite another way.
Just BEFORE 1/1 OF BKK and just after - and that from around the beginning of Dec. Nowadays, ThaiLionAir is usually the cheapest in terms of final price, because you don't pay anything extra for luggage there. But NOW you don't have to - you can wait for a sale from AA - around 2-3 months in advance you still have low prices.
Thai smile is very good indeed and they are one of the few flying from suvarnabhumi
so you save time and bus or taxi costs if you continue to fly after your foreign flight, so fly directly to chiang mai and do Bangkok on the way back
And as mentioned earlier, 20 kg of luggage without paying extra
Avoid air Asia unless you want to travel without luggage and are very flexible, air aia is the ryan air of Asia for me, pay extra for everything
You are in the Christmas period, so it is indeed best to book in advance, with Thai Smile you can easily do so up to a month in advance without a price difference
If you are looking for a good hotel in chiang mai, take a look at Lamphu hotel, centrally located yet quiet and affordable
I also go to chiang mai during the summer holidays and have booked these flights together first bangkok and then the internal flight, the travel agency has arranged everything
